KEARNY, N.J. — An uninvited guest made its way into several New Jersey suburbs, creating quite a stir inside normally quiet areas.Police believe a 300-pound bear is roaming around communities and was most recently seen in North Arlington. It was likely the same bear that was spotted in Kearny. It's not clear how a black bear ended up in the middle of densely populated areas like Kearny — and Harrison, beforehand — but some New Jersey residents needed a second to get their bearings after spotting the furry animal."I haven't seen any here, this is the first time. Surprised me. Especially close to my house," said Ruben Martinez. He barely noticed that it had climbed up a tree in his own backyard around 1 p.m. Monday. That was until he heard some commotion outside."When I went outside, that's when I found out. I saw police in my driveway, that's how I found out. Plus, I see a lot of people outside," Martinez said.Harrison police said the bear was first spotted on Saturday at the local Walmart and by Red Bull Arena. Officers snapped a picture with their bare hands and posted it on social media, warning people to be on alert."We did get a call from the town of Kearny that there was a bear was in the neighborhood and police were looking for it,” said Herbert Ginbel, a local resident.Police asked residents to bear with them as they tried to capture the animal. They've requested an animal control unit and notified the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife."I just hope everything will work out all right, and as a deacon I pray that the bear will be ok, and it can be returned to the habitat that I belongs,” Ginbel said. It's estimated the bear weighs 300 pounds. Ironically today marked the beginning of bear hunting season in New Jersey, though the governor said 2020 would mark the end of bear hunting under his administration. This story originally reported by Cristian Benavides and Rebecca Solomon on pix11.com. 1941

KENOSHA — In his first time speaking publicly since his arrest, Kyle Rittenhouse told the Washington Post that he "would have died that night" if he hadn't brought a gun to a Kenosha protest where law enforcement officials say he shot and killed two men.Unrest broke out in Kenosha following the Aug. 23 police shooting of Jacob Blake. Police said Rittenhouse, 17, is charged with the homicides of two men during the night of Aug. 25. FILE - In this Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020, file photo, Kyle Rittenhouse carries a weapon as he walks along Sheridan Road in Kenosha, Wis., during a night of unrest following the weekend police shooting of Jacob Blake. Rittenhouse's defense team has called him a member of a militia. Rittenhouse is accused of killing two people and seriously wounding a third.(Adam Rogan/The Journal Times via AP, File) Rittenhouse had told police that he and another friend were "hired" to provide security for businesses during the unrest. Later that evening, police said Rittenhouse allegedly shot and killed two of the protesters. Rittenhouse was charged with first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree reckless homicide for the shooting deaths of Anthony Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum. He was also charged with shooting and injuring a third man, Gaige Grosskreutz, in the arm.In an interview with the Post, Rittenhouse said he did not regret having a gun that night, stating that he "had to protect" himself and "would have died that night" if he hadn't.The Post reported that one of his sisters said that Rittenhouse supported peaceful protests, but called "rioters" in Kenosha "monsters."Rittenhouse told the Post that he used his stimulus check for money to give to his friend Dominick Black in order to purchase the rifle used on Aug. 25. Rittenhouse was not old enough to purchase the gun himself. Dominick Black Black, who is currently facing charges for giving the gun to Rittenhouse, kept the gun at his father's house in Kenosha. On the evening of Aug. 25, Black alleged that Rittenhouse took the rifle from the house and went with him into Kenosha to "protect businesses" during the unrest.Rittenhouse went back to Antioch after the deadly shooting but was extradited to Kenosha on Oct. 30, where he is currently being held on a million bond.To watch or read the full Washington Post story, click here. This story originally reported on TMJ4.com. 2422

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City, Missouri Police officer shot a pit bull Friday afternoon after the dog bit a USPS mail carrier.Officers and Animal Control responded around 4:30 p.m. local timeFriday to the 1500 block of NE 79th Street on the call.According to police notes, they located two “large, aggressive pit bull dogs” on the scene. While the animal control officer attempted to capture the dogs, one of them charged toward the officer, prompting the officer to open fire on the dog, striking it in the shoulder. The second dog ran away back to the residence it had escaped from where it was eventually captured.A few minutes after being shot, the dog jumped up and ran around a house where animal control captured it.During the course of the investigation, officers spoke with the owner of the two dogs. The owner was “belligerent” and did not want to accept responsibility for the dogs running loose in the neighborhood, according to police.  977

KENOSHA, Wis. – Kenosha is still reeling from a police shooting that ignited riots, leading to catastrophic property damage. Now, the community is trying to heal and look forward with artists who have come from all over. One block away from where Jacob Blake was shot residents of the Wisconsin city are determined to heal, one brush stroke at a time.“All of the downtown area was boarded up with plywood,” said Francisco Loyola, Director of the Kenosha Creative Space. “And it was protected but it looked like a ghost town.”The Kenosha Creative Space is a nonprofit that connects artists to the community.Loyola put out a call to artists in an effort to begin the process of healing by turning boarded up businesses into works of art.“Right now, we don't know exactly how many boards have been painted,” said Loyola. What they do know is that artists have heeded the call from all over the country and even Canada to support Kenosha.Artist and activist Roberto Marquez traveled up from Dallas. After consulting with the Blake family, he put his brush to work to depict how he sees the event that thrust the city of around 100,000 into the national spotlight.“Some of the people, they might not like it, but that's the reality,” said Marquez. “I mean, I didn't pose a problem. I'm just, you know, painting with my brush.”There are also students trying to make sense of what has happened in their quiet community.“We thought that it would be the best thing to take them out of these cages that we've been calling our homes. And let them exert their energy and their passion their desire,” said Ardis L. Mahone Mosley at the Kenosha Unified School District. “We've been very unified as of recently.”High school junior Aniyah Ervin says in a volatile time of uncertainty, this is one way to come together to mend some of the hurt.“It's been very healing, honestly, because although we know it's not permanent, it's good to show how together we are at the moment,” said Ervin. “You know, it may all burn down again next week. We don't know. But as of now, we're all together, we're all making art. We're all making Kenosha as beautiful as we know it to be.” 2159
