VIENNA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo and Austrian President Heinz Fischer met here Friday afternoon, agreeing to further expand cooperation on bilateral and international issues in face of the global financial storm.     Wu arrived in Vienna Friday morning for an official goodwill visit to Austria. He is the first Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) who visited Austria in the past 15 years. He said the financial crisis has caused great impact on every country in the world and required joint effort of all countries in addressing it.     Wu briefed Fischer about China's policy measures to address the financial crisis and maintain stable, fast economic growth.     Both sides agreed that despite differences on such issues as Tibet, they should join efforts to bring in a new era of bilateral relations.     Fischer reiterated that Austria will as always stick to the one-China policy, which is a consensus of all political parties in Austria. This stance will never change under any circumstances.     Wu appreciated Fischer's statement and reiterated China's principled stance on the Tibet issue.     On China-EU relations, Wu said both sides should firmly support each other's development by joining hands to address global challenges, including financial crisis and climate changes. He said the two sides should join efforts to curb trade and investment protectionism and maintain rapid growth of trade and economic cooperation.     Wu hopes Austria will play a constructive role in advancing China-EU relations.     Fischer expressed the belief that Wu's visit to Austria will help enhance friendship and advance cooperation in all fields between the two countries. 

BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) -- China is strongly committed to a world without nuclear weapons, Gareth Evans, co-chair of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND), told a press conference on the sidelines of the North-east Asia Regional Meeting of the ICNND here Saturday.     The regional meeting, which was held Friday and Saturday, allowed the ICNND to engage in intensive action with key nuclear experts providing insights on global and regional nuclear issues and challenges, including proliferation threats and the safe and secure management of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.     Evans said, "There is a need to energize a very high-level global political debate on what remains very important risks and threats for the future of this world."     According to Evans, threats come from the existing nuclear weapons, new countries acquiring such weapons in the future, nuclear weapons and material falling into the hands of terrorists and non-state actors who have the intention and capability of causing catastrophic damage. Moreover, the multiplication of new power plants around could also create problems.     Evans said, besides some large countries, there has to be very strong engagement by all the other significant players and countries in the international community.     In terms of the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, the issue involving the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) occupied a lot of time in the discussions.     This is a very important regional security issue relating to disarmament and non-proliferation, said Yoriko Kawaguchi, the other co-chair of the ICNND, adding that China has played an important role as an intermediator.     "The DPRK should abide by the United Nations' resolutions," she said.     Evans said that it is essential to keep the door open for dialogue and continue to explore the probability for resolving this thing peacefully.     Yoriko Kawaguchi echoed Evans by saying that there was a consensus on the importance of the object of the six-party talks on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsular.     Evans stressed that it is important for all nuclear weapon states under the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) to agree on a strong statement going into the NPT review conference about their commitment to a nuclear weapon-free world and the determination to take serious steps toward that goal.     A review conference has been held every five years since the 1968 NPT came into force in 1970. It has been ratified by nearly all the members of the United Nations. The exceptions are India, Israel, and Pakistan which neither signed nor ratified the accord and have developed nuclear weapons. The DPRK ratified it but withdrew in 2003.     The ICNND is an independent global initiative established in 2008, supported by the governments of Australia and Japan. It is designed to re-energize the debate about the need for a nuclear weapons-free world and all the interrelated issues of nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and the future of civil nuclear energy in the run up to the 2010 NPT Review Conference.

YEKATERINBURG, Russia, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Tuesday presented a four-point proposal for dealing with the ongoing global financial crisis at the first summit meeting of BRIC countries which groups Brazil, Russia, India and China.     First, BRIC countries should commit themselves to bringing about an early recovery of the world economy, Hu said. "We should work hard to overcome the difficulties and try to take the lead in recovering from the global financial crisis," he said, adding "This is not only for our own need, but also contributes to world economic recovery." The first summit meeting of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) leaders is held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, on June 16, 2009.Second, BRIC countries should commit themselves to pushing forward the reform of international financial system, Hu said.     To establish a new international financial order that is fair, equitable, inclusive and well-managed, and provide guarantee for the sustainable development of the global economy in terms of system and mechanism conforms with the trend of the historical development and is in the fundamental interest of all parties, he said.     BRIC countries should improve the international financial supervision mechanism and ensure the effective participation of the developing countries in world financial supervision organizations such as the Financial Stability Board, Hu said.     Third, BRIC countries should commit themselves to implementing the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the president said.     The international community should not overlook development issues and cut the input for development while dealing with global financial crisis, he said.     Instead, it should pay close attention to the impact that the crisis has left on developing countries, especially the least developed ones, he added. He also called for greater food assistance and closer agricultural and food cooperation.     "We should also accelerate our efforts in developing clean and renewable energy, and establish advanced research and promotion systems in a bid to diversity our energy supply," Hu said.     He urged the four countries to strengthen information exchanges and communication, share the experience on epidemics preventions and control, and work together to develop and share vaccines, and cooperate in pandemic control and prevention.

ROME, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Monday, calling for a boost to ties between the two countries.     During the talks, Hu said Chinese-Italian relations have witnessed healthy and stable expansion over the past 39 years since the two countries established diplomatic relations. In 2004, the two countries agreed to establish an all-around strategic partnership, unveiling a new page for Chinese-Italian friendly cooperation, Hu said.     As next year will mark the 40th anniversary of the forging of bilateral diplomatic relations, China is willing to join hands with Italy to lift bilateral ties to a higher level, Hu said. He noted that China's participation is a must for the international community in its move to tackle the crisis, reform the international financial system and realize sustainable development.     On the EU-China relations, Napolitano said Italy would continue to play an active role in boosting the ties.     The president also reiterated Italy's adherence to the one-China policy.     According to the press release, Hu also briefed his Italian counterpart on the latest social and economic developments in China.     The two leaders held the talks at the Quirinal Palace, and Napolitano hosted a grand welcoming ceremony in honor of Hu prior to the talks.     Hu arrived in Rome earlier on Sunday for a state visit at the invitation of Napolitano.     Hu was also to attend the summit of the Group of Eight and major developing countries later this week in the central Italian city of L'Aquila.     This is the sixth time that the Chinese president has attended the G8 outreach session.
