Anyone driving on Interstate 15 near Spring Mountain Road near the Las Vegas Strip early this morning may have seen a shocking billboard. It said “Shoot A School Kid Only .”The infamous art collective INDECLINE “vandalized” the sign on Wednesday night. The billboard is used by Battlefield Vegas, which advertises that it is the best indoor shooting range experience in Las Vegas. The sign was also changed to say "DEFEND LIVES REFORM LAWS."INDECLINE says they did it because of “America’s longstanding obsession with gun culture and out government’s inability to honor the victims of mass shootings by distancing themselves from the homicidal policies of the NRA.”INDECLINE says it is "calling on all political parties to immediately work towards a legislative resolution that aims to protect citizens and reform inadequate gun las that are currently placing value on assault weapons over that of human life.”This isn’t the first time that INDECLINE has vandalized a billboard or did something controversial in Las Vegas and other cities around the U.S.INDECLINE was also behind the naked Donald Trump statues in 2016 that popped up in many cities, including Las Vegas, New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In addition, the group vandalized a billboard that was promoting a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor. They also hung mannequins in suits on billboards with the caption “Dying For Work.” The message on the billboard was covered up before 9 a.m. Thursday. Animals have been used as therapy for years, because research has linked them to a decrease in anxiety and depression in pet parents.It is sometimes referred to as the "Pet Effect" by experts and described this way by Mental Health America:"The Pet Effect, also known as the human-animal bond, is the mutually beneficial relationship between people and animals that positively impacts the health and well-being of both. Any pet owner will tell you that living with a pet comes with benefits, including constant companionship, love and affection."A 2016 survey by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute found that nearly 75% of the animal owners they talked with reported mental health improvements from their furry family member.With a global pandemic keeping many of us isolated, is now the time to adopt a pet?"I adopted Sake from the Arizona Humane Society on July 1," said Scottsdale dog owner Randi Chan.Chan said she immediately brought a dog trainer into the mix and created a structured routine, something she did not have just a few months ago."Before I had her, I was probably working like 12 hours every day," Chan said. "Because... I'll take a break for dinner and then I'll be like, 'Well I have nothing better to do. I've already watched everything on Netflix, so I'll guess I'll start working again.'"She knew that likely was not very positive for her mental health.Now, Chan gets fluffy hugs and a reason to get outside safely for their walks."If anything, the pandemic has just raised awareness to the importance of both adoption and fostering," said Arizona Humane Society's Bretta Nelson.They have moved to appointment-only for their adoptions. Once a prospective pet parent sets up their time slot, a representative from the shelter will call them ahead of time to go over what animals they may be interested in."We think with this one-on-one match-making process, you can talk to people about a pet's medical or their behavioral, and they weren't already attached before learning that information," Nelson explained. "So, they were able to make a logical decision."That has helped their return rate for pets drastically decrease, while the number of families fostering has sky-rocketed.However, most people will have to return to work at some point and the pets will have to be left behind.Nelson said that a structured routine that is created the first time they come home will make that transition easier."Set a routine that's going to work, even when you're back at work," Nelson said. "Don't start taking them for walks at 11 a.m. every day if that's not something you can uphold because they're not going to be too happy about that."Chan said she has been practicing putting Sake in her crate a little bit at a time, so she is comfortable and those trips to the park they both love will still be a part of their day-to-day routine."She really definitely brings a smile to my face because she is a very loving dog," Chan said.To learn more about the pets up for adoption at the Arizona shelter, click here. An Atlanta police officer has been fired following the fatal shooting of a black man and a second officer was placed on administrative duty. The move announced by police early Sunday comes on the heels of the resignation of Atlanta's police chief following the killing of 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks. Police identified the fired officer as Garrett Rolfe. Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said she doesn’t believe the shooting was justified. "It has become abundantly clear that over the last couple weeks in Atlanta is that while we have a police force full of men and women who work alongside our communities with honor respect and dignity," Bottoms said, "there has been a disconnect with what our expectations are, and should be as it relates to interactions with our officers and the communities in which they are entrusted to protect."The Georgia Bureau of Investigation say Brooks resisted arrest after he failed a field sobriety test and a struggle ensued over a Taser. Police say 36 people were arrested at Saturday night protests. A Wendy's restaurant, which was the site of Brooks' death, was destroyed amid the unrest on Saturday.Police have released body camera and dash camera footage.The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said that officers responded to a call of a man who fell asleep behind the wheel in a drive thru. The police accused Brooks of failing a field sobriety test.Police then claimed Brooks struggled with officers during the arrest. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said that officers then fired a Taser at Brooks.Eyewitnesses told investigators that Brooks then struggled with officers over the Taser, and that’s when Rolfe officer shot Brooks.Brooks was transported to the hospital, and he died during surgery.Atlanta has been the site of a number of large protests in recent weeks in the wake of the death of George Floyd. Floyd died on Memorial Day in police custody after a Minneapolis police officer held a knee against his neck for nearly nine minutes.The NAACP reacted to Saturday's shooting via Twitter."Stop urging the black community to be patient as our people are being gunned down by those sworn to 'protect and serve.' Sweeping police reform is no longer a consideration," the NAACP said in a statement. 2261
