(KGTV) — It took a true team effort to help disentangle a humpback whale spotted off La Jolla's coast this week.SeaWorld says the 35-foot whale was reported late Thursday by local birdwatcher Gary Nunn as its swam near shore. Rescue team members traveled about one mile out from Scripps Pier on Friday to find the animal tangled in about 900 feet of rope and weighed down by six fishing traps called pots.SeaWorld rescuers spent four hours cutting the whale free. A local fishing vessel — called McGhee Marie — helped haul the gear away. Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell says that in five people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning while using a generator.Caldwell says that generator safety is important and asks that residents keep generators away from covered areas of homes."Don't let a generator cost you your life," Caldwell said.The generator was inside an attached garage and the door was partially open. The level of carbon monoxide caused the deaths of all five inside the home.A total six people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning since Hurricane Laura has passed.Electricity is expected to remain out for days or even weeks throughout Louisiana following the hurricane. 670

(KGTV) -- San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore asked the National Guard to support local law enforcement officers in keeping looters and rioters from destroying properties amid demonstrations against police brutality and racism.The City of La Mesa posted a message saying a portion of the guard would respond to the city Wednesday night.The new rules and assistance of the National Guard were requested in La Mesa after what started out as peaceful demonstrations turned violent Saturday night when several banks and vehicles were set on fire, and numerous businesses were ransacked.In a post on Twitter late Wednesday, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office announced that 200 members of the California Army National Guard are in the county following a request from Gore. "They will work alongside law enforcement providing security to critical infrastructures (public buildings, courthouses, power grids, etc.) during the protests to prevent looting & arson," the sheriff's office said. "This mutual aide will help keep our communities safe while protecting everyone's right to protest."One hundred National Guard members were deployed to La Mesa, with the other 100 assigned to other parts of the county.The news comes as cities throughout the county enforce a days-long curfew.
