(KGTV) — A recent study may cause pause at the dinner table this holiday season for millions of Americans. The study by the New England Journal of Medicine claims that nearly one in two adults (49 percent) will be obese by 2030, with obesity rates being at least 35 percent in every state and higher than 50 percent in 29 states. Nearly one in four adults are projected to have severe obesity by 2030. "Severe obesity" is projected to be the most common body-mass index (BMI) category among women, black adults, and low-income adults nationally, the study added.RELATED: Carlsbad company invents weight loss balloon"Our analysis indicates that the prevalence of adult obesity and severe obesity will continue to increase nationwide, with large disparities across states and demographic subgroups," the study said. Most previous obesity estimates have relied on surveys in which respondents often understate their weight. The new report used decades-long federal study to get a more accurate picture of the growing epidemic. The study says BMI data from more than 6.2 million adults collected from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey in 1993-1994 and 1999-2016 was used and measured with data from 57,000 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. RELATED: High obesity rates reported among San Diego kidsBMI is measured using a person's weight in kilograms divided by the squared height in meters, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC adds that obesity affected about 93.3 million Americans between 2015-2016, and can lead to heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer that are some of the leading causes of preventable, premature death. An independent expert told the Associated Press that the trends are alarming and say the nation could face medical and financial problems due to the large number of those considered obese. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1990

(KGTV) - A Southern California police department's Facebook post is igniting the online debate over panhandling.Ventura Police posted a video on their Facebook page Wednesday discouraging locals not to give to panhandlers and to give to charities instead."Want to help those in need in our community? Please say no to panhandling and yes to charities," Ventura Police's post read. "Giving money to panhandlers often feeds addictions and does not help someone get long-term help."The video features a silent officer holding various signs reading things like "want to help?" and then "please don't give to panhandlers."Comments on the viral video have ranged from supportive to not, some claiming that charities are not enough to solve the issue. Others say the video reinforces negative stereotypes of homeless individuals. The police department said people should instead give to groups that provide meals, medical attention, and avenues that are long-term solutions to homelessness.RELATED: Children spotted alongside man panhandling on La Jolla street cornerThe City of Ventura's website also advocates against panhandling, saying it "may make us feel good for a moment, but cash spent on feeding addictions shortens the life of homeless individuals and supports their ability to live on the street rather than get permanent help." 1355

(CNN) -- Ikea is shutting down its only furniture factory in the United States. The Swedish company will end production this December at its plant in Danville, Virginia. Operations will move to Europe, where the company says it can cut costs."We made every effort to improve and maintain the competitiveness of this plant, but unfortunately the right cost conditions are not in place to continue production in Danville," site manager Bert Eades said in a statement. The Danville facility, which opened in 2008, employs 300 workers. Wooden products including shelves and storage units are made at the plant. In justifying its decision, Ikea pointed to raw material prices, which it said are higher in the United States than Europe. Ikea operates plants in European countries including Poland, Russia and Sweden.Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, tweeted in 2018 that workers at the Danville plant were worried about how tariffs would affect costs. Kaine said the plant imports many raw materials.Since Kaine visited the plant, the Trump administration imposed tariffs on imports of particle board, a common Ikea material, from China.Ikea said Tuesday the decision to close the plant was not related to tariffs. It said that particle board used at the Danville plant is purchased from US suppliers.Ikea owns manufacturing facilities in nine countries, employing roughly 20,000 people.A recent shift in Ikea's retail strategy to adapt to the growth of online shopping has led to job cuts in other parts of the business. The company has been investing in online pickup services and digital fulfillment centers, and in 2017 bought TaskRabbit, an online marketplace for finding gig workers. It's also been opening smaller stores in big cities to attract younger shoppers.Ingka Group, the Swedish holding company that owns and operates most of Ikea's stores, said last year that it would lay off about 7,500 employees, or 5% of its global workforce, and build 30 smaller stores in major cities around the world in the next few years. The company said it could ultimately create 11,500 jobs as a result of this shift. 2122
