SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Details are beginning to emerge about the woman who was shot and killed inside a Church’s Chicken in the South Bay Wednesday night. Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, was killed while working her shift at the Otay Mesa West restaurant. “I believe in God and I believe that one day justice will come his way and that won’t bring my daughter back, but I know that there will be justice for her,” said Emma Karla Merino, the victim’s mother. "I just want justice, because nobody can bring my sister back. Her body is gone, but she is here in my heart and she’s never going away,” said Gabriela Merino, the victim’s sister. Someone who knew Merino-Iba?ez told 10News she had worked at the Church’s Chicken for nine years and was a shift manager. A vigil is set to take place at the restaurant Friday at 6 p.m. Another victim was identified as Mario Rojas. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now in stable condition. According to police, the suspect is a man in his 30s who got into an argument with employees after trying to use counterfeit money. Surveillance video showed the suspect sitting outside for about 50 minutes before walking back into the restaurant on the 3700 block of Del Sol Boulevard and opening fire at 5:27 p.m. 1603

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For decades Veterans Village of San Diego has been committed to serving homeless veterans, aiding in transitional housing and rehabilitation. In recent years, however, they've been struggling to fill vacant beds."Over the last several years, we've just seen a change in the environment. There's a lot of resources here in San Diego for homeless veterans. The number of veterans who've wanted to come through our programs has decreased," said Kim Mitchell, President and CEO of Veterans Village. "Some just aren't ready, as you know there's are a lot of homeless here in San Diego, not only veterans but non-veterans, people are in various stages of where they are in life."Now the nonprofit hopes to welcome non-veterans into two of their programs: County-funded Drug Medi-Cal and the transitional housing program. "There is a lot of people that want to get off the street and want to go through a program to get clean and sober, and so if we have beds in this program that can help them do that we want to do that," said Mitchell.Mitchell says they have full support from the Housing Commission and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.Leaders will ask City Council on Tuesday to approve the request. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Gun control activists filled Balboa Park Thursday, demanding gun control for the safety of students.Wendy Wheatcroft, the director of "Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense In America, says the event was in response to the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.  As a mother of three, she was horrified.“I want to be able to do everything in my power to make sure they grow up in a safe environment,” Wheatcroft said.RELATED: Victims of Parkland shootingWheatcroft says California has some of the toughest gun laws in the country and should be the model for the federal level.“In California, we have a gun law called the gun violence restraining order and this allows people to remove weapons from someone they deem to be a threat to themselves or others,” she said.  “If they had this law in Florida, they could have prevented this from happening.”RELATED: Vigil held for Parkland shooting victimsJim Miller is with the San Diego Gun Owner’s Political Action Committee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Food banks across San Diego say demand is up, and volunteering is down as the Coronavirus pandemic spreads."There are a lot of unknowns right now," says James Floros, the CEO of the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank.Floros says they've already had dozens of volunteer groups cancel their upcoming shifts, as the CDC and state and local governments advise against any large gatherings.Meanwhile, he says demand is skyrocketing, since many people are losing money from reduced shifts, or losing access to meals they get from work, communal gatherings or other places."We know a lot of the service industry are getting laid off, school closures, what have you," says Floros. "So, we're creating our plans to ramp up our service to the community."The Food Bank serves 350,000 people a year, providing food to numerous outreach groups who then distribute it to people who are food insecure.But as distributions become harder to coordinate with new social distancing guidelines, groups are having to rethink the way they get food to those who need it."we have to reinvent the paradigm and figure out ways to get food to people who are self-isolating," says Vince Hall, the CEO of Feeding San Diego. "Because they're complying with the edicts of health officials, but they're cut off from the food that keeps them healthy."Hall says his group has canceled all group volunteer events. But they're still allowing people to volunteer on an individual basis to help deliver food.The food banks also encourage donations."It makes me sad," says Hall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters on alert after seeing the latest Wildland Fire Potential Outlook maps released by the National Interagency Fire Center. The maps show San Diego with an above average wildfire potential that increases from June through August and starts to wane slightly in September.Cal Fire Public Information Officer Thomas Shoots said the outlook focuses on three things; "We're dealing with fuel, weather and topography." Shoots said the agency can't do anything about the topography or weather, but every neighbor can do their part reducing fuel, especially around their home.RELATED: How to prepare defensible space around your homeShoots acknowledged the winter weather gave San Diego County a reprieve fire-wise, but it posed a new problem: new growth that's already drying out."A grass fire can run a lot faster and spread faster which means our resources are spread out quicker, and then that means it has the heat and momentum to build up to the bigger fuels," Shoots said.Just down the road, a neighbor had landscapers pruning her yard."I think it's very important to have this done...helps the whole neighborhood," said the woman named Gene.Cal Fire said the best time to get the landscaping work done is before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.Last week, neighbors in Rancho Santa Fe saw the danger become a reality when Cal Fire said a landscaping crew using the lawn mower sparked a 3-acre fire near Fairbanks Ranch."It's starting to get to the point where it's too late; we need you to clear while we have the chance," Shoots said, referring to hot weather making these incidents more likely."We need all the help we can get," he said."Definitely, they've got a lot of work ahead of them, I think," Gene said.Cal Fire reported this year to June 16th, there have been 1,386 fires, burning 11,954 acres across the state.
