TONGHUA, Jilin, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers are racing to save 18 miners trapped in a coal mine that flooded due to a deluge that hit the area in northeast China's Jilin Province shortly after midnight Tuesday.More than 2,000 rescuers are pumping water out of the mine through an auxiliary shaft after the entrance of the main shaft collapsed amid rain-triggered floods.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has instructed the local government and other related departments to spare no effort in saving the miners' lives.The accident happened at 12:10 a.m. at Hongyuan Coal Mine in the Erdaojiang District of Tonghua, the third largest city in Jilin, said Zhang Dejun, a spokesman for the city government.He said the miners were working below ground to pull out machinery that had been soaked after days of torrential rain, when the flooding occurred.The mine was near the lower reaches of Daluoquangou River, which is swollen after the catchment received 116.2 millimeters of rain Monday."Time is very pressing," Zhang said.Wang Rulin, governor of Jilin Province, arrived at the scene at noon Tuesday to oversee the rescue. Wang visited the families of the trapped miners to hear rescuers' and experts' reports.The Hongyuan Coal Mine has an annual production capacity of 60,000 tonnes and is a township-owned mine. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.Jilin Province has been battered by heavy rain and floods this summer. At least 85 people have died and 66 are missing after floods over the past two months, according to the provincial government.

NONG'AN, Jilin, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- With the approach of a new round of torrential rains, the country roads in flood-ravaged Nong'an County in northeast China were packed with villagers fleeing their homes Wednesday.Traveling aboard tractors, trucks, mini-buses, and motorcycles, and carrying belongings such as quilts and chicken, thousands of people set off on a journey of exodus.Up to 27,000 villagers living downstream from the Songhua River in Jilin Province need to be evacuated as downpours are expected to batter Nong'an from Wednesday evening until Friday, said Wang Wei, deputy Communist Party chief of the county."Fresh downpours may lead to the breach of riverbanks and two reservoirs upstream would have to open sluices to discharge water, which would threaten the lives of residents downstream," Wang said."The mass evacuation began in the early morning today. By now, 18,000 people have moved to safety. There are still 9,000 young villagers who were asked to stay and help fortify the riverbanks," he said in the late evening.Torrential rains pounded the county one week ago, swelling the Songhua River and inundating almost 50,000 hectares of cropland, or about half of the total farming area."I really don't want to leave my home. But the village officials told me: so long as you are still alive, you will have your home again," said Yu Shutao from Liansankeng Village."I will bring my family to go to my elder brother's home in the town. BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The state-owned assets in China's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises (SOE) reached 2.01 trillion yuan (297.40 billion U.S. dollars) by the end of June, up 10.71 percent from 2008, China's state-owned assets regulator said on Thursday.Nearly a quarter of the SOEs have state-owned assets over 10 billion yuan each, while six have state-owned assets over 100 billion yuan, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission said in a statement on its website."China's state-owned capital has been flowing towards big companies with international competitiveness," said the statement.Some 30 central SOEs are listed as Fortune 500 companies. They are in sectors such as telecommunications, power generation and petro-chemicals.The number of China's central SOEs is 123 in August this year, down from 196 at the beginning of 2003.
