URUMQI, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region will strengthen ecological and environmental protection by completing afforestation of over 133,000 hectares this year, local authorities said.

China should improve water governance of the Grand Canal and take the will of original residents into consideration in tourism development, according to the political advisors.

In the remote Shuangxi Village of Wanzai County, for instance, 220 out of more than 3,200 local residents have engaged in e-commerce business, which helps sell agricultural products worth 20 million yuan to the outside world annually.

Bai Qiuyong, an official with the ministry, attributed such improvement to the country's effective measures on protecting marine ecosystem and environment.

"We urge the U.S. side to stop arms sales to Taiwan and sever their military ties, prudently and properly handle Taiwan-related issues, to avoid serious damage to China-U.S. relations as well as to the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait," said Geng.
