SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The fire on the USS Bonhomme Richard has impacted every sailor who works on the ship, but also those who live on the ship. To help, groups have stepped up to accept donations to give to the people who have been displaced. The Navy Life Naval Base San Diego Facebook page posted a warning to watch out for fake GoFundMe or charity request pages, and said the government is not allowed to accept donated funds to fix or replace the ship.Related: Crews battle USS Bonhomme Richard fire for fourth dayThe post highlighted three official groups to donate to who are safe and reliable: Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, which is accepting online payments and mailed in checks to be donated to sailors,Support the Enlisted Project, which is accepting all types of donations, andUSO San Diego, which is also accepting all types of donations.Gillian Gonzalez, with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, said more than 80 sailors lost all of their belongings in the fire. Her group immediately bought gift cards for sailors displaced and they’re working on replacing uniforms as well. She advises that people who make donations to their group specify that their donation should go to the USS Bonhomme Richard sailors directly.The USO office is taking every type of donation, from hygienic items to clothes. Executive Director Ashley Camac said they’ve taken loads of items to the ship every day since the fire started.“It might have been where they lived. It certainly is where they worked. So when you bring product to them and you bring toiletries to them and you bring essential needed items, there’s a smile that happens, there’s a sense of relief,” said Camac. 1682

The NRF says an "estimated 147.8 million U.S. consumers [are] expected to participate, up from 134.3 million last year, according to the annual survey released today."This includes both in-store and online shopping.This year had the shortest shopping window between Thanksgiving and Christmas, leaving shoppers nervous.Jessica Ramirez said she was so busy working she could only start shopping Saturday. She said the family had been to a few stores that day and she will get as much done as possible in the final countdown before Christmas.Dana Giusti was eating a candy cane while she shopped in Best Buy, saying her sugar fix was staving off anxiety about finishing up Christmas shopping and wrapping all the presents for her family.In Mission Valley, the Target parking lot was filled with lines of cars. Families had different plans of attack to tackle their lists. "You can see the sidewalk, the Convention Center is closed, probably half the restaurants are open," he gestured to neighboring businesses with closed signs posted on their windows.Bravo said they're focused on keeping their doors open, "we need to look at are we paying the staff and are we making enough money to survive? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The environmental community is concerned that individuals using masks are disposing of the face-covering properly.Dimitri Deheyn is a Scripps Institution of Oceanography research scientist and studies biodegradable objects, something disposable masks are not. He said around the world, researchers are seeing an increase in trashed masks on beaches, which will ultimately end up in the ocean and harm wildlife and our ecosystem.In addition, when the disposable masks are thrown away, the string can become a danger to animals if not cut, so he said if you have to use disposable masks, cut the string that goes around the ear.Deheyn has been working with a company based in Austria called Lenzing that typically makes eco-friendly comfortable clothing from fibers that can degrade, making them better for the environment. He said the company shifted to making biodegradable masks when the pandemic hit, and he’s helped test them.“Basically test them, we put them in the seawater and see if they degrade and yes they degrade,” he said.He said there are U.S. companies that make a similar product, and this is what people should be wearing instead of disposable masks. He said reusable masks are another solution to helping save the environment.“If you are acting as an individualistic human being, and you oppress nature, at the end this could be very bad for us as a human society,” he said, encouraging everyone to do their part. 1457

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Chicano Federation of San Diego County distributed hundreds of COVID-19 prevention kits in Barrio Logan to help prevent the spread of the disease in one of the county's hardest hit communities.The Chicano Federation partnered up with several local business to help provide over 500 kits to residents. Kits include children and adult face masks, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, and thermometers.According to our ABC 10News heat map, Barrio Logan's zip codes have reported some of the highest number of coronavirus cases in San Diego County. Data from local health officials shows Latinos and Hispanics make up over 60 percent of the number of positive cases in San Diego County."We think it's important to send the message that it's really important to stay alert, stay aware, to still follow the county and state messaging around COVID-19 including wearing masks and physical distancing," said Nancy Maldonado, President and CEO of The Chicano Federation of San Diego County. 1012
