Thousands of Americans descended upon Washington D.C. Friday for a "March on Washington." The event was organized following the death of George Floyd earlier this year. "It's just too much injustice," Beth Wagner, who traveled from New Jersey to participate in the march, said. Wagner has two black sons. There was a rare sight at San Diego City Hall on Tuesday.A local developer pitched a massive mixed-use complex with hundreds of homes to the council, in front of mostly empty seats. "Our focus has always been on creating a sense of place for the entire neighborhood," said builder Gary Levitt, of Sea Breeze Properties.Sea Breeze Properties plans to transform a 72-acre site just south of the 56 into hundreds of homes, plus offices, retail, and even a hotel and movie theater. The project, Merge 56, didn't get a single 'no' vote from multiple community planning groups.Some nearby residents even came to the meeting to support the project. But even with that backing, it still took five years just to get the council's unanimous vote of approval Tuesday.Levitt said the delays come from regulations, including environmental impact reports, and cost his company an extra million - about 15 percent of that in city processing fees.Councilman Scott Sherman said that is one reason we're in housing crisis. "At the end of the day all the prices get passed along to the consumer and the price of housing," Sherman said. Levitt said ideally it would take two years for a project to get approved. "It's a very expensive process and at the end of the day you're just playing with paper," he said. The project includes 242 new homes, condos, and apartments. Additionally, 47 of them will be affordable units. Two environmentalists did raise concerns about local impacts but the council didn't acknowledge them in their deliberation. Levitt's work, however, isn't done. The crisis is inspiring a new generation of health care professionals."Growing up, I was always pretty interested in science. I have a few family members who are in medicine and nursing," said University of Colorado fourth-year medical student Lauren Heery. "Helping people through my direct knowledge as a scientist, and now as a medical student, was I think what interested me the most."She, like many medical students across the country, has found herself in a unique situation because of the pandemic."As all of the COVID things happened, as medical students, we’re not able to continue with our clinical rotation, just given the increased risk to us, the patients, and limited supplies that needed to be prioritized for staff," said Heery.So, she shifted gears and ultimately made the decision to spend a year researching the virus."I got involved with a few projects with the infectious disease division at University Hospital, as I was sitting on my hands waiting to get back into the clinical setting," said Heery.One of those projects is looking at the racial and ethnic disparities in the disease."Coronavirus kind of came together with a lot of my interests that I had been kind of working on. But the pandemic really fueled me to do something a little bit different and try to help figure things out," said Heery.With thousands of medical students having to change their plans, Heery is not alone. A combination of restrictions placed on restaurants and public health experts advising the public to avoid restaurants has resulted in a decline for many eateries.The National Restaurant Association said it expects that 10,000 restaurants will close in the next three months, based on a survey of its members.The National Restaurant Association is hoping to get some additional relief from Washington. Last week, a bipartisan group of legislators put forth a stimulus bill that would include additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program, which helped businesses make payroll early in the pandemic."In short, the restaurant industry simply cannot wait for relief any longer," said Sean Kennedy from the National Restaurant Association. "We appreciate the efforts of a group of moderate members of the House and Senate to advance a true compromise between the competing proposals from Democratic and Republican leaders. If this moderate plan represents a 'down payment' for a larger relief package in early 2021, it will provide restaurants with immediate relief to hold on through the most dangerous point in our business year."While restaurants are having receding revenues, restaurant costs are not declining, and in some cases, increasing, according to the National Restaurant Association’s survey.
