BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development said Wednesday that it has begun work on the reconstruction plan for the mudslide-flattened Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province. An inspection team would be sent to the disaster-ravaged areas to gather information for drawing up the reconstruction plan, the ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website. However, it did not elaborate on the reconstruction plan nor provide detailed information about the inspection team.On the same day, Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu urged authorities to prepare for post-disaster reconstruction of the mudslide-hit regions. He said the responsible authorities must promptly send competent teams to the disaster sites to assess losses so reconstruction plans can be developed on the basis of these findings. The death toll from the massive mudslides in Zhouqu, beginning on Aug. 8, had risen to 1,287 as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, with 457 still missing, the local disaster relief headquarters said.
JINAN, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- China concludes a five-day air defense exercise on Saturday with a live-fire drill and precision attacks on air targets by ground-to-air missiles. The live-fire drill, in Shandong Province, was part of the exercise code-named "Vanguard-2010," which began Tuesday in seven cities across Henan and Shandong provinces, involving more than 12,000 personnel.Seven types of ground-to-air weaponry, including a new type of ground-to-air missile and another state-of-the-art anti-aircraft gun, were used in intercepting and concentrating fire on air targets.Nearly 200 military aircraft, including drones, reconnaissance aircraft, fighter jets and helicopters, were involved in the five-day military drill, said Feng Zhaoju, deputy commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Command. The annual drill, consisting of two phases, focused on an emergency evacuation, strategy, reconnaissance, early warning, ground-to-air attacks and evacuation of command posts during the first phase which ended Thursday. Its second phase included testing of air defense abilities in a "complicated electromagnetic environment."A "Vanguard-2009A" exercise last year involved 5,000 troops from the army and air force."Vanguard-2008" included a 2,200-strong armored brigade from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Area Command.
BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday expressed his optimism over the possible road link with China, saying the construction of the road would boost bilateral trade.Zardari is on his five-day working visit to China, the fifth China tour since he took office as the Pakistani president in 2008. Zardari who once called himself "the first businessman president of Pakistan", said that he had his own "concept" for improving Pakistan-China trade relations.A road connection with China is one of his ideas to make this happen."If you want to come to Pakistan or southeast Asia from China by sea, it will take months, but if you look at the road transportation to my port, it's only 1,100 miles from your border," said Zardari in an interview with Xinhua.Zardari's remarks came amid some reports that China and Pakistan are considering building a rail link to reach the Arabian Sea."The concept has been accepted," said Zardari without elaborating.China and Pakistan have maintained their "all-weathered" and time-tested friendship for decades. Now there are more than 120 companies and about 10,000 Chinese nationals in Pakistan, involved in sectors such as mining, energy exploration and infrastructure building. But Zardari said Pakistan needs more investment.China-Pakistan trade in the first five months of this year reached 3.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 31 percent. While addressing the China-Pakistan Economic Cooperation Forum earlier Friday, Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming said that bilateral trade could hit 15 billion U.S. dollars in 2015.On the just-concluded China-Pakistan anti-terror drill in northwest China, Zardari said the two countries should keep united in the fight against terrorism.
BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Friday solicited opinions from ten medical experts on the ongoing health care reform during a discussion in Beijing. The experts, including medical professors and hospital presidents, offered advice on some of the top issues in health care reform such as the reform of state-owned hospitals, the establishment of health care service networks at different administrative levels, and the fostering of general practitioners.Li, in charge of the national reform of the health care system, urged medical and health care professionals to fully play their role as the backbone of the reform, according to a statement released late Friday.China launched its massive health care reform last year, which seeks to provide adequate and affordable health care services to all. The State Council, or Cabinet, issued a circular in April detailing specific goals and steps for future reform.Li said more investment and human resources are needed to support health care service providers at grass-roots level to improve the service, a key task and challenge in the reform.
