BALTIMORE, Maryland — In the early hours of Jan. 19, 2015, the 15-foot Christmas tree proudly displayed in the Great Room of a large Annapolis, Maryland mansion caught fire.It spread through the home killing Sher Grogg's brother, sister-in-law, and their four young grandchildren.“They just didn’t have enough time to do anything, and it was under three minutes and everything was gone,” Grogg said. It's painful for her to talk about, even more distressing to see rooms engulfed in flames, but as an advocate for Common Voices, a coalition whose mission is a fire safe America, she witnesses fire demonstrations.“Oh, it’s horrible. And actually, really horrifying for me to see because I know my brother was right in the middle of a room that had flashover and that was his last experience,” said Grogg. This is her outlet to grieve. She's found purpose in educating and warning others. Had her brother’s home had fire sprinklers, she thinks her family would still be here today.“You can replace material things, but you can't replace a life and that's the difference. You really need to consider fire sprinklers to save the lives of your family,” said Grogg.Shane Ray is the president of the National Fire Sprinkler Association. He’s been in the fire service since 1984 and has seen how smoke detectors alone are not enough to prevent deaths.“We have more contents in our home than we've ever had before and most of those contents are made out of synthetic materials, so it produces a much more toxic smoke, much faster and much more deadly,” Ray said.On Thursday, he demonstrated how quickly a fire spreads. Within a minute, flames and smoke engulfed a tiny room. The smoke alarm sounded then the sprinklers went off. In a side-by-side comparison, the same room, without sprinklers, is completely destroyed by the fire.Ray said the sprinklers give families time to evacuate, buy firefighters time to get to the incident, and can save the lives of our pets.“Ninety-six percent of fires are contained with just one sprinkler. This is the sprinkler that came out of that fire. So, if we had another 10 rooms in the house, this is the only sprinkler that would activate. It's not tied to the smoke alarm, it's not tied to anything else, it's individually heat-activated,” said Ray, attempting to dispel some myths surrounding sprinklers. The heat in a room must reach 155 degrees before the bulb in the sprinkler shatters, releasing water. Burnt toast or cigar smoke will not set off fire sprinklers.According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 2,500 people die in home fires each year. Sprinklers decrease the risk of dying in a house fire by 80 percent.Grogg also wants to remind people with this upcoming holiday season to water your tree every day, get rid of it right after the holiday, and unplug your tree every night.National Fire Prevention Week runs through Oct. 13. BERLIN (AP) — German prosecutors say police investigating the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann in Portugal in 2007 are searching a garden plot in the northern city of Hannover in connection with their probe. Julia Meyer, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office in Braunschweig, confirmed local media reports Tuesday that police investigators had been at the site since Monday with an excavator in connection with the case but couldn't provide further details. McCann was 3 at the time of her 2007 disappearance from an apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal while on a vacation with her family.German authorities said last month they had identified a 43-year-old German citizen as a suspect in the case. The suspect was "in and around Praia da Luz" at the same time McCann went missing, officials said in the news release. The suspect was seen driving two vehicles during his time in Portugal: a VW campervan and a 1993 Jaguar XJR 6. Officials say the Jaguar was re-registered to someone else in Germany the day after McCann went missing. 1057
BOSTONIA (CNS) - A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition this morning with injuries he sustained in a shooting at a marijuana dispensary near El Cajon and the shooter was at large this morning. The gunfire in the 1600 block of North Second Street in the unincorporated Bostonia community was reported shortly after noon Friday, according to Sgt. Bob Seger fans are still dealing with the fallout from his Fall 2017 tour. The heartland rocker wasn't able to perform for medical reasons; a big disappointment for Arizona fan Monica Harty."One of those concerts you wanna see before you die--this was one of them," she says. But after months of waiting for the show to be rescheduled, she decided to ask StubHub for her money back."They said 'well we have a placeholder date,'" Harty says. But that date was well over a year away and with 6 on the line, Harty was not willing to wait. Didn't matter. She says she was told, "It still shows in our system that a concert is coming and we don't have to refund.""I said well that doesn't seem exactly right."But it was. Because Seger's shows were postponed---not canceled. Which makes a big difference in the world of ticket selling. StubHub--where Monica bought hers--has a no refund policy for: "postponed events, partial performances, line-up changes, or venue, date, or time changes."What if she couldn't be there on some random future date? She even filed a dispute with her credit card company. It was denied.Yep, Bob Seger himself would have to officially cancel the concert for Harty to see that money again. The other option?"Well you can go ahead and resell the tickets that you have on our site," she says. "How do I sell something that doesn't exist?"None of it made sense to Harty so she let me know.A spokesperson for StubHub said: Postponed events "typically are re-scheduled quickly. We are always happy to take the customer inquiries and respond to them 1:1 for this show, or any future events."In this case, after seven months of waiting StubHub agreed to refund Harty's money after our inquiry."I feel better," she says but says it doesn't take the place of seeing Seger in concert.Cancellations often trigger an automatic refund. With postponements, you're likely going to have to work for it. Find out the policies before you buy and decide if it's worth the risk. 2016
BOSTON (AP) — A Boston veterinary hospital got quite a surprise recently when a family brought in their bulldog after he stopped eating. The Angell Animal Medical Center found 19 baby pacifiers in the dog's stomach. It started in April when the Wellesley family noticed that their 3-year-old dog, Mortimer, started getting nauseous before meals. His owner, Emily Shanahan, brought Mortimer to the vet, who prescribed medicine to take care of the issue. But it didn't help and Mortimer eventually stopped eating entirely.Shanahan went to Angell, where they took an X-ray and discovered the pacifiers.Vets think Mortimer had been taking the pacifiers from Shanahan's two children over the course of months. The pacifiers were removed using a medical scope that did not require surgery. Mortimer recovered and is back at home. 827
