URUMQI, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government and the Communist Party of China (CPC) will severely punish the outlaws in the Xinjiang riot, and restore normal social order in the region as soon as possible, senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang said here Thursday.     Authorities would take stability as their top priority at hand, and crack down hard on violence, in accordance with laws to protect the lives and property of people of all ethnic groups, and safeguard ethnic unity, said Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. GUANGZHOU, May 30 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangdong Province reported one suspected A/H1N1 flu case late Saturday.     The case involved a 23-year-old Chinese Venezuelan. The female college student left Venezuela Tuesday and flied to Guangzhou, Guangdong's capital, Wednesday via Paris, and her relative drove her home in Foshan City, the provincial health department said.     She took a rest at home after showing flu symptoms Thursday and was sent to Foshan No.1 People's Hospital Friday.     Early Saturday, the woman was tested positive for A/H1N1 flu by the Foshan Center of Disease Control and Prevention. The Provincial Center of Disease Control and Prevention reexamined Saturday noon and the result was also positive. The case needs further testing.     China Saturday reported three new influenza A/H1N1 cases, bringing to 24 the total number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland.     The one in the southeastern province of Fujian involved a local who studied in Canada. The other two in Beijing involved a Chinese American and a Chinese student who studied in the United States.     All the cases but one on the mainland were found shortly after they came from countries hard hit by the A/H1N1 flu epidemic. Seven were in Beijing, four in Shanghai, six in Guangdong, three in Fujian, and one each in Sichuan, Shandong, Zhejiang and Hunan.     Eight cases have been discharged from hospital by Saturday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).     China raised vigilance against influenza A/H1N1 Friday after a patient in southern Guangdong Province was declared the first case of local transmission on the mainland. Medical experts are investigating into and analyzing the local transmission.     The patient, a 24-year-old woman living in Guangdong's capital city of Guangzhou, was believed to be infected by a man from New York on Monday. Guangdong provincial department of health confirmed both as A/H1N1 flu cases Friday noon.     Her flu symptoms have eased, Yin Zhibiao, deputy president of the Guangzhou No. 8 People's Hospital, said Saturday. But as the mainland's first case of local transmission, she would likely stay longer in hospital, Yin added.

UNITED NATIONS, June 15 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called for the peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations.     La Yifan, minister-counselor of China's Permanent Mission to the UN, told a Security Council meeting that China has always called for resolving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations in a peaceful manner.     "China always believes that resolving this issue through diplomatic means is in the interest of peace and security in the Middle East and is in the common interest of the international community," he said.     La said China is ready to continue to play a constructive role in this regard.     At present, "rare opportunities" exist with regard to the restart of the negotiations with Iran over the nuclear issue, he said.     La called on Iran to strengthen its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to resolve outstanding issues as early as possible.     He also urged the international community to seize the opportunity to intensify diplomatic efforts so as to ensure an early start of the negotiations.

Later, he became a member of the CPC-led Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and played an important role in strategic battles and maneuvers of the Red Army.     During the Long March, Li supported Zhu De and other senior leaders in resolute struggle against the splittist activities of Zhang Guotao.     In China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45) and the Liberation War (1946-49) against the Kuomintang Regime, Li became a ranking officer in the CPC-led armed forces and fought a large number of major battles and established several revolutionary bases.     After 1949, the year the People's Republic of China was founded, Li served as vice premier for 26 years and played a big role in managing the economy. He was wrongly criticized and persecuted during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).     Starting in the late 1970s, as a core member of the second-generation of CPC leadership headed by Deng Xiaoping, Li assisted Deng in ushering in and carrying on the reform and opening-up drive.     In his final years in service, Li held top-level Party and state roles, including vice chairman of the CPC Central Committee, a Standing Committee member of the Political bureau of the CPC Central Committee, state president, and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

RAMALLAH, June 23, (Xinhua) -- With more than 30 years of involvement in the work related to the Middle East issue, China's new special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike said on Tuesday that he'll employ his personal experience on the region to help fulfill his mission.     Wu arrived in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Tuesday, starting the second leg of his first regional tour as China's new special envoy.     Upon his arrival, Wu told Xinhua that Chinese and Palestinian peoples have a traditional friendship, China has been long supporting the righteous Palestinian cause, with the positive sign emerged recently on the peace issue, China, along with the international community, is concerning on how to revive the peace process and push forward the process toward a final solution.     With this concern, Wu said the aim of his trip is to know the attitude and response of all sides involved in the peace process on the newly emerged situation, lay out China's stance on the issue, and exert efforts to boost the process with all sides in coordination.     Touching upon the issue of the internal Palestinian dispute between factions, mainly the rival Fatah and Hamas, Wu said Palestinian unity is crucial to solve the Middle East issue.     "Hamas is a major Palestinian faction, which enjoys strong public support," said the envoy, adding that, "it'll be important if Hamas can take an positive attitude toward the peace process and involved in it."     Wu said China is willing to see the success of the internal Palestinian dialogue, and is ready to make efforts on helping Palestinians to achieve national unity.     Wu, former Chinese ambassador to Egypt, was appointed as the special envoy in March this year to replace Sun Bigan.     He has been director of the Department of West Asian and North African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and also the first Chinese plenipotentiary to the Arab League.     Citing his three-decade long diplomatic experiences in the region, Wu said that he witnessed both the disasters and losses caused by conflicts and the development, stability and opportunities brought by peace tracks between countries in the region.     "The contrast between the two tracks makes me convinced that military confront could not bring about the resolution of the Middle East issue, and the only way out is through peace negotiations," said the envoy.     Bearing the belief, the envoy said he will discuss both his personal experience and China's stance on the Middle East issue with all sides during his mediation, and actively involve in the peace process to fulfill his mission.
