SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of robbing a Cherokee Point smoke shop at knifepoint, police said.The robbery was reported shortly after 11:30 p.m. Thursday at MA Smoke Shop, 3543 University Ave., San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The suspect, later identified as Mario Chavez, walked into the smoke shop and selected several items from a display, the officer said.He then allegedly walked up to the clerk holding a knife and demanded a lighter, Heims said. The clerk contacted police while the suspect was standing at the counter, then officers arrived a short time later and arrested Chavez, who was still in the store.Chavez was booked into San Diego Central Jail around 3:40 a.m. Friday on suspicion of robbery, according to jail records. 799

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 17-year-old boy was pistol whipped and shot in the leg by a man who also snatched the child's cellphone Saturday morning in the Grantville community of San Diego.The teenager was talking on his cellphone in the 6100 block of Decena Drive when he was approached by the suspect at 4 a.m., who demanded his cellphone, said Officer Tony Martinez of the San Diego Police Department.The victim refused and was pistol whipped and then shot in the leg. The suspect then fled the scene with the child's cellphone, Martinez said. The boy suffered a laceration to the head and a shattered femur. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital.The suspect was about 6-foot, 4-inches tall with a heavy build. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 41-year-old man was jailed Thursday morning on suspicion of seriously injuring his roommate during a fight at a College Area home, police said.It happened shortly before 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at a home on College Avenue near Pontiac Street, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The 41-year-old man and his 42-year-old male roommate got into an argument for unknown reasons and the argument turned violent, Buttle said.During the fight, the younger roommate punched the 42-year-old man several times in the head, the officer said.Officers responded to the home and took the 41-year-old man, whose name was not immediately available, into custody without incident, Buttle said.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, he said. 829

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A wildlife overpass near Salt Lake City is proving to be successful at helping animals safely migrate over a busy interstate.The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) hailed the Parley's Canyon overpass a success in a recent Facebook post, saying it has also helped motorists stay much safer as well.In its Facebook post, UDWR included video that show many animals using the overpass to safely cross to the other side of Interstate 80. Cameras set up along the bridge captured moose, bears, porcupines, squirrels, mountain lions, deer, coyotes, and other critters.The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Utah State University have been monitoring the overpass throughout the year.The overpass opened in December 2018. UDOT says it spans six lanes of interstate and was constructed to improve safety on I-80 by reducing wildlife and vehicle collisions.UDOT coordinated with UDWR on the wildlife issues specific to the project, including wildlife migration patterns.While it may be tempting to visit the bridge in an attempt to spot some critters, UDWR says to keep off the overpass and not disturb the animals. 1154
