Every year, a motorcycle gang rides through the serene mountains of southern Utah. However, it’s not your typical pack of motorcyclists. It’s a group of dentists from all over the world, riding to raise money.Steven Anderson is the co-founder of Smiles for Life, a charity that’s raised nearly million, thanks to motorcycle rides like this one in Utah.“All the proceeds from this ride go to fund a dental humanitarian initiative that we do in several third-world countries,” Anderson says.These fundraisers help families and children across the globe who have little to no access to dental care.“We’ve trained people from around the world to do dentistry that haven’t been to dental school, and they now have a way to earn a living for their families,” says Roy Hammond, who has been a dentist for more than 30 years.Hammond started Miles for Life almost 20 years ago. “It changed my life, my outlook, on the world that we live in and the hardships of the people and lack of access to the comforts of life we have,” Hammond says.Dentist Ron Massie came from Missouri to ride with the other dentists and their families. He says he rides to get the word out about the lack of dental care around the world.Just like the perspective they get from riding on the open road, the motorcyclists learned there is more to life than what money can buy. DEER PARK, Texas — A massive chemical fire that filled the sky with smoke and flames for days in southeast Texas has finally been snuffed out. But its effects could still be dangerous.The city of Deer Park announced a shelter-in-place order Thursday morning due to concerns about "levels of benzene or other volatile organic compounds within city limits."At least six area school districts have canceled classes Thursday, a day after the flames were extinguished.The Intercontinental Terminals Company said increased levels of benzene were detected early Thursday."These levels are below those that represent an immediate risk," ITC said."We have notified the surrounding municipalities, and out of an abundance of caution, Deer Park Emergency Operations Center has called for shelter in place precautions immediately for all of Deer Park."The neighboring city of Galena Park also issued a shelter-in-place order due to the elevated benzene levels, according to an alert on the city's official website. Douglas County in Colorado is ranked the healthiest county in the country. The news doesn’t surprise Colorado natives Amber Jaworsky and Kristin Gibowicz, who are both yoga instructors. They say physical activity is contagious in Douglas County. “If you're sitting at your kitchen table looking out the window and there’s 15 people riding their bikes by and everybody is walking their dogs, you're [kind of] like, ‘Dang, I got to get my butt moving!’” says Jaworsky. The pair says say their mental health is just as important as their physical health. “Just getting out, breathing fresh air and slowing your mind down a little bit, putting your phone down disconnecting,” Gibowicz says of maintaining her mental health. Gibowicz says mental health has everything to do with physical health, and she’s right. Diabetes and smoking have the strongest correlation in reducing life expectancy. However, mental health was nearly as strong. Researchers say mental health did not have as strong of an effect last year. But it's in line with information from the Centers from Disease Control (CDC) that showed rising opioid overdoses and suicides shorten life expectancy. “There's some national research that looks at a concept they called deaths of despair,” explains Nancy VanDeMark, with Mental Health Colorado. VanDeMark says those are things many people struggle with like depression, suicide, alcohol and drug use.
