Nearly a year after walking off the job, teachers in West Virginia are going on strike again.Last year, teachers in the state went on strike for nine school days, fighting for higher pay. This year, they’re protesting an education reform bill that would bring charter schools to the state and create education savings accounts parents could use for homeschooling, private schools and other educational costs.Unions are calling it retaliation. "We are taking action,” said Fred Albert, with the West Virginia American Federation of Teachers. “We are left with no other choice.”Tuesday’s strike is just the latest of several strikes nationwide in recent months. Teachers in Denver, Colorado recently went on strike for three days. In Los Angeles, 30,000 teachers went on strike for six days. Teachers in Oakland are set to strike Thursday. Experts say the strikes will likely continue. “Once you have educators seeing that when they come together in collective action and they raise their voices together, they're looking around and they're seeing it's not just them,” says Becky Pringle, vice president of the National Education Association. If you try and post a response that's similar to one that's been flagged in the past, you'll get a reminder of the community guidelines and that they can change your response. But you can still post what you want. “One of the problems of the age we're living in is that people don't necessarily share a common understanding of what counts as civil interaction,” said Keith Bybee, a professor of law and political science at Syracuse University.Bybee says some people are strategically not civil or just plain rude in order to attract attention. You see it in politics and trolling behavior. But in the end, civility benefits everyone. “Civility is sort of the lubricant that makes social interaction possible,” Bybee said. “It allows us to live in a diverse, heterogeneous society but nonetheless coordinate our actions for common purposes, so it’s important to find a way to get along with strangers.”Ultimately, you have to care what the other person thinks of you to achieve civility. 1418

Keith Boham.Boham said animal control officers were able to scan Sugar's microchip and identify the owner. In a region known for beer, cheese, and very cold winter, the surf scene is growing and Jake Bresette is helping lead the charge. “I just love it, man,” he said. “Anytime I can get out into the water, whether it’s one foot or 10 feet, it’s always a good time.” More and more surfers are keeping up on a well-kept secret: with the right weather, the waves on the Great Lakes can be just that – great! Outside of the water, Bresette owns and operates Lake Effect Surf Shop in Milwaukee where he sells surf and skate gear and offers lessons to anyone who wants to learn how to surf. “Yeah, we actually do them with or without waves,” he said. “So, if there are waves that’s great, we’ll get out here and score some waves. But, if not, we’ll bring out some big paddle boards.” While introducing the sport of surfing to a new generation, Bresette always remembers to honor the local pioneers of the sport. “We didn’t start the surf scene here,” he said. “We’re just helping to continue the progression.” Bresette says the key to that progression is to get out when the surf is up. “I know it sounds a little cliché, but it is really about the journey as well as the success of finding waves,” he said.
