SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two new supervisors along with four other county officials, including the district attorney, were sworn in Monday.With family members looking on, Supervisors Jim Desmond and Nathan Fletcher, Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk Ernest Dronenburg, Sheriff Bill Gore, Treasurer/Tax Collector Dan McAllister and District Attorney Summer Stephan took an oath to both the U.S. and state constitutions.Fletcher, who succeeds Ron Roberts, is the second Democrat to serve on the technically nonpartisan Board of Supervisors in roughly three decades.He defeated Republican Bonnie Dumanis in the Nov. 6 election to represent the Fourth District, which includes parts of central and northern San Diego proper from downtown to La Jolla.Desmond, former Republican mayor of San Marcos, defeated Democrat Michelle Gomez, a legislative analyst. He succeeds Bill Horn in representing north San Diego County, including Carlsbad, Oceanside, Fallbrook and Borrego Springs.Gore, Stephan, Dronenburg and Dan McAllister all won outright in the June primary, with more than 50 percent of the vote collected by all four incumbents.After being sworn in, each official gave a short speech. Fletcher said it's a tremendous honor to be able to serve the public, and he takes that obligation very seriously. He said change can be difficult and ``push us outside of our comfort zone,'' but can also mean new insight, benefiting policy and governance.Whatever differences board members have, ``we must always strive to find agreement,'' Fletcher said. Bush when he declared ``mission accomplished'' on the Iraq war.``There is still more work to do, Gore said, adding that the county has lowered the recidivism rate to 33 percent, doubled the number of mental health clinicians in its jails, increased beds, and added psychological training and programs to help inmates once they get out.He also said the Sheriff's Department hopes to have a fully accredited mental health care program by 2020 and is planning to build a tunnel connecting the downtown central jail to new courthouse over the next two years.Gore praised colleagues such as Undersheriff Michael Barnett and Chief Administrative Officer Helen Robbins-Meyer for their efforts. He also credited the San Diego Police Department and other law enforcement agencies for their collaboration on serious public safety issues.Stephan said she is grateful for her team and community ``for the mission we're putting forth, the mission of respect and equal treatment for everybody.''Stephan mentioned how her life was shaped by her grandmother, who lived through the Armenian genocide early in the 20th century and traveled to America to find a home.Stephan said her office is going to ``push back the (against) bullies'' and stand up for the vulnerable, including seniors and school children.To avoid a ``one size fits all'' justice system, she and her colleagues created a special position for criminal justice and mental health reform, while also protecting community safety.Stephan said her office is close to launching program within the coming year that will help young people be better informed about substance abuse and deceptive social media practices.Dronenburg said his office has re-opened two offices in the county, improved mass-appraisal techniques and shortened the backlog for appraisals, saving the county million.He said the department has improved both customer and online service, and hired a taxpayers' rights advocate.Dronenburg credited his colleagues for the positive changes.``We are no longer faceless bureaucrats,'' Dronenburg said, adding the department has received national and state recognition for the use of technology.``I've been on the ballot 18 times and won 18 elections,'' he added. ``I want thank the voters -- they're the ones who put me here.''McAllister said the county expects to collect .5 billion in taxes from residents this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A former associate vice chancellor for UC San Diego is suing the university for age and gender discrimination, as well as wrongful termination.Jean Ford, former Associate Vice Chancellor for UC San Diego Health Sciences Advancement, filed her lawsuit Monday against the UC Regents and Chancellor Pradeep Khosla.Ford said she “reported discrimination, harassment, retaliation and abusive conduct by Khosla and his chief of staffs (current and former) and assistant chancellor numerous times.”“No formal investigation was initiated and no meaningful action was taken to… prevent further harassment,” according to the court documents.According to her biography still on the UC San Diego website, she spearheaded the health sciences portion of the university’s campus wide campaign. Ford came to San Diego in 2015 after a decade at Columbia University Medical Center, where she most recently served as vice president for development. According to the lawsuit, Ford was recruited to work for UC San Diego. She had more than 20 years of experience in health sciences development.She said in December 2015 that working conditions began to deteriorate. The lawsuit states Khosla changed Ford’s reporting structure and wanted her to report to a male supervisor who had “significantly less experience in fundraising, management or identifying and recruiting team members.” Ford alleges that she was overlooked for promotion in favor of a younger man “who had no similar experience to [her].”The lawsuit stated Khosla was “increasingly hostile” to Ford, despite having obtained million in gifts within her first eight months of working at UC San Diego. She said that he openly questioned her salary and expressed irritation she was making so much money; however, Khosla did not make any comments to highly-compensated males.His behavior toward women was regularly displayed, according to court documents. Khosla “spoke openly and negatively about President Napolitano and made it clear that he did not answer to her.”Ford alleged he made comments about her shoes and clothing. She added that Khosla targeted multiple women over the age of 40 for discrimination and harassment. Ford ultimately expressed her concern directly to the chancellor, who later retaliated against her by “undermining [her] work, openly questioning her decisions, blocking her recruitments, refusing to approve her budget expenditures, continuously changing the Chancellor’s expectations for her, and making negative comments to her co-workers, subordinates—and even donors.” In August 2018, she was accused of ordering her assistant to take an online compliance module for her—something Ford said was not true. She was fired that month for “sharing of her password and her assistant taking the course for her, as well as less than satisfactory performance in key areas.”Team 10 reached out to officials at UC San Diego. A university spokesperson said: “UC San Diego has only recently become aware of the complaint, which has not yet been served on the University. UC San Diego and Chancellor Khosla strongly condemn all forms of intimidation, harassment and discrimination and are committed to fostering a climate that is supportive of our students, staff and faculty. The University will review the complaint and respond appropriately.”Ford’s attorney, Kristina Larsen, said the University of California has been aware of the chancellor’s treatment of women since at least 2014. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former La Jolla restaurant owner convicted of raping multiple women was sentenced on Tuesday to 40 years in prison.On a live stream to the courtroom while sitting in jail, Daniel Dorado was read his term after several women gave their victim impact statements.The former owner of Voce Del Mare was found guilty last December on 20 counts related to rape and sexual assault of four victims who were unconscious and intoxicated. ABC10 News broke the story two years ago when he was charged with drugging and raping women, sometimes at his restaurant.Fighting back tears on Tuesday, one victim described her trauma from meeting Dorado after answering an ad on Craigslist for a hostess position. "Years after the assault, I still don't feel safe going to job interviews in-person, alone. I don't feel safe to do outdoor activities alone. I can't tolerate being around men. Not even family," she stated."He is an evil individual," said another woman who added, "I simply went on a date with him and ended up getting sexually assaulted by him for hours in a hotel room where I was unconscious."One woman who was named as a victim defended Dorado on Tuesday and said that she was even friends with him. She accused detectives of manipulating her to testify against her will and appear confused about a possible assault. She told the judge, "Your honor, Mr. Dorado never raped me. I never went to the police. I never filed a police report. In fact, I declined a restraining order against Mr. Dorado and I told detectives that I did not want to press charges."Dorado addressed the courtroom and denied any wrongdoing. He added, "I have spoken the truth since the very first day that this all began. I did not skip town. I did not make faces to the accusers. I am still in shock by what has happened." He maintains his innocence and has said that every sexual encounter was consensual."The total term of imprisonment is 40 years. I don't mind saying [that] I believe this is the maximum I can impose under the law," the judge told the courtroom. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With one of the largest holidays of the year just a day away, getting around and conducting business before and on the holiday can be tricky to navigate with what is closed and open.The North County Transit District will have a normal service schedule for Christmas Eve. However, the Amtrak R2R partnership with NCTD -- which allows Coaster customers to travel on Amtrak trains in the San Diego area -- will be blacked out through Monday. During this time, all Amtrak Pacific Surfliner customers will be required to show a valid Amtrak fare and no COASTER passes will be accepted.NCTD schedules will be reduced to a Sunday service schedule on Christmas.The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System will run a similar schedule, with normal weekday hours Christmas Eve on all Trolley lines and MTS local, urban, Express, Rapid and Rapid Express bus routes.Christmas is more complicated. All Trolley lines except the Silver Line will operate on a half-hour frequency on Christmas Day. Rapid, urban, and local bus routes will operate on a Sunday schedule.No service will be provided on Rapid Express routes 280 or 290, Rapid routes 204, 237 and Express routes 50, 60, 110, 150, Sorrento Valley Coaster Connection and most express bus routes. MTS Access subscriptions are cancelled. Subscription passengers who still want service must call ahead of time to arrange their transportation.Finally, several rural routes have been rescheduled.
