 American Apparel is coming back.Gildan Activewear, the Canadian company that owns the clothing brand, announced on Thursday that it will open a physical American Apparel store in Los Angeles this fall.American Apparel filed for bankruptcy in 2016. This will be the first location to open since May 2017, when Gildan finished liquidating the stores that were still open. Gildan is not planning to open others."We're treating this as a flagship pilot store," said Garry Bell, vice president of corporate marketing and communications for Gildan. He said the store will be "very experiential and very interactive," but did not provide details.The news was reported earlier by Bloomberg.Before the liquidation, American Apparel had 110 stores in the United States and a total of 193 locations worldwide, according to a court filing.Gildan, which also owns the tights brands Peds and Kushyfoot, purchased the American Apparel trademark after the company filed for bankruptcy. Then it relaunched American the brand online in the United States in August 2017.Several retail stores have recently declared bankruptcy as shoppers increasingly move online. Last year, US store closing announcements more than tripled and set a record, according to the retail think tank Fung Global Retail and Technology.Bon-Ton Stores, one of the country's largest department store companies, said in April that it plans to liquidate all 256 of its stores, which include Bon-Ton, Boston Store and Carson's. In March, Toys "R" Us said that it was closing all of its US stores.But American Apparel faced unique challenges. The company, which was known for its racy ads, fired its controversial founder and CEO, Dov Charney, twice in 2014 amid allegations of mismanagement and violations of the company's sexual harassment policies.The 2016 bankruptcy filing noted that "over the last two years, the company lacked a marketing plan and engaged in ad hoc advertising that lacked focus." 2003

Many hourly workers claim they will not be paid severance.Shelia Brewer, who worked for 17 years as a full-time hourly employee at a Kmart in Rockford Illinois, said the company told her she'd get eight weeks of severance. Instead, she received a letter saying that severance payments were being halted because of the bankruptcy, and she would get only the four weeks of pay she had already received."It hit me hard. I was already struggling as it was," she said. She said the bonus plan makes her angry."They say we can't get our severance because there's no money, but they're getting bonuses? It's like a slap in the face," she said.A Sears spokesman declined to comment on the bonus plan or its current severance policy.Eddie Lampert, the company's primary shareholder and chairman, apparently will not receive a bonus, according to the filing.The three top executives who were given the responsibility for running the company during its reorganization are in position for the largest bonuses. They are Chief Financial Officer Robert Riecker, Chief Digital Officer Leena Munjal and Gregory Ladley, president of the company's clothing and footwear business.Each could receive as much as 0,000 a quarter in bonus payments for hitting the maximum cash flow targets. They could receive four times that much if Sears goes out of business, in something the company called an "acceleration event."Retention bonuses for top executives are not unusual when companies go bankrupt. But bankruptcy law limits how much severance companies can pay.Toys "R" Us won approval for up to million in bonuses for 17 top executives a year ago during its failed attempt to stay in business, despite objections from employees groups and others."It's outrageous that the bankruptcy court is considering bonuses for Sears' high paid executives while laid off employees get their severance pay cut off," said Carrie Gleason, campaign manager for Rise Up Retail, a retail employee advocacy group. "This is exactly what happened at Toys 'R' Us. Hipp says it’s a tough time to be a working parent.“Childcare costs have continued to rise over the last couple decades,” Hipp says.She adds that having a stimulating place for kids to go during the summer is key.“Most American children live in families where all available parents are in the workforce,” Hipp says. “So childcare is a real necessity for families and it’s a great opportunity for children to get healthy growth development so they’re ready and successful in life.”Other places to consider that often provide more affordable week-long camps for kids: a local YMCA, parks and recreation department, or a local Council for the Arts chapter. 1836
