SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Heartwrentching video of a humpback whale tangled in fishing net off of San Diego's coast prompted wildlife experts to react quickly.But the whale's condition is unknown after rescue crews were unable to help the animal.The video was captured Friday by Domenic Biagini, owner and captain of Gone Whale Watching San Diego. What appeared to be another spectacular whale sighting turned into heartbreak."We got really excited because we saw these giant splashes," Biagini told 10News' Amanda Brandeis. "From that elation to kind of, pure heartbreak."RELATED: The world's smallest whale on the brink of extinction in the Sea of CortezNOAA and SeaWorld crews were notified of the whale. But SeaWorld said the whale was swimming too fast for them to continue rescue efforts."15,000 pound animal jumping out of the water next to a small boat that they're trying to use to rescue it is extremely dangerous, " said Biagini.Now the hope is agencies further north are able to find the whale to make sure it is freed from the netting.The face of the 30-foot whale appeared to be tangled in green fishing net. The netting was a drift gill net, which hangs vertically in the water and could measure up to a mile long.RELATED: Boaters warned to watch out for newborn gray whales during late migration"They are notorious for being dolphin, whale, and sea lion killers," Biagini said.Biagini said at one point, another humpback whale arrived and swam by the tangled whale."To see something that graceful, that gentle, that harmless go through something like this that's 100 percent caused by us, there's no debate on it. It's maddening," says Biagini. "For me. that's when I really started to get emotional because these are very sentient animals that do feel a wide range of emotions."This season, boaters are already being warned to watch out for newborn gray whales making their way from Alaska to Baja, Mexico. Biagini says some adult gray whales may give birth during the trek south because of the late migration. 2028

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Friends of Anthony Womack, the teenager who died after jumping from Sunset Cliffs Wednesday, spent the morning joining a local car club to wash cars in National City, in exchange for funeral donations."He was just like a happy person," said Sweetwater High School student, Sarah Seineke. "He was always around school laughing. "She came to us and she asked us if we could do something for her friend."The community showed up, car after car stopped by the church leaving cash and comforting the teens who have lost someone who meant so much."I hope they remember his vibe as a person," said Seineke. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dockless scooter users can now ride without a helmet as long as they are over the age of 18. A new law signed by Governor Jerry Brown went into effect January 1 lifting the helmet requirement for adult scooter users. AB 2989 removes the mandate for riders of motorized scooters to wear a bicycle helmet as long they are older than 18. It also forbids riding a motorized scooter on highways with a speed limit greater than 25 mph and roads with a speed limit greater than 35 mph, unless there is a marked bikeway. DUI laws still apply to scooter users and riders must have a valid driver’s license or permit. Helmets are required for those under the age of 18. People can still be cited for lying the scooter down on a sidewalk to impede traffic or riding scooter with a passenger. 807

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Frustrated business owners in the Midway District say an old strip club was a better neighbor than the current property owner, which happens to be a church. The Rock Church bought the strip club, formerly known as The Body Shop, in August of 2018. Now, businesses say nothing has changed except there’s now more trash and drugs. Neighbors say they want the church to clean it up. Noor Shamoon comes to work at Navis Pack and Shop to a very unwelcome sight. “Food, trash feces on wall, on our vehicles.”He says it’s a foul odor and claims people who hang out in the area vandalized the businesses work truck. Employees at the Midas muffler business across the street also say trash and loitering have become huge problems. “We're trying to run a business and it's hard when you have that across the street,” said Gary Stricker. People who work in the area say prostitution is rampant as are drugs. One man reportedly overdosed recently. “I think he maybe shot up some kind of drug or something. We were concerned about him so we called an ambulance,” Stricker said. When The Rock Church dropped the banner over the “nude girls” sign at the former strip club, they promised to clean up the neighborhood. Since the church purchased the property for .3 million, they haven’t touched it. "I hope they do something about that to clean the place up you know,” Stricker said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Four Democrats running to be governor of California faced off in a debate in San Diego Thursday night.The San Diego County Democratic Party hosted the debate between John Chaing, Delaine Eastin, Gavin Newsom and Antonio Villaraigosa.The Democratic Convention is set to begin Friday. The candidates were asked a wide range of questions from fixing the tax system to housing and small business.A topic that led the charge was the topic of gun control. All candidates said they support stricter gun laws.A poll released two weeks ago shows Newsom leading Villaraigosa 23 to 21 percent.
