The Trump administration is waiving federal contracting laws to speed construction of a U.S.-Mexico border wall, moving the president closer to fulfilling a signature campaign promise in an election year but sparking criticism about potential for fraud, waste and abuse. The Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday it'll allow 177 miles of wall to be built faster in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. A 2005 law gives the Homeland Security secretary sweeping powers to waive laws to expedite border barrier construction. Last week, the Trump administration announced that .8 billion in funds appropriated by Congress earmarked for defense projects would be diverted toward funding the border wall. Nearly .5 billion of those funds were intended for projects earmarked for the National Guard, while the rest was intended to be spent on replacing aircrafts and ships. 896

There’s a place called Friendship Park between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California. It is the only place along the Southern California border where families can legally reunite on both sides of the fence. Friendship Park, or El Parque de la Amistad, is a historic meeting place on the US-Mexico border that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. On most days in San Diego, the park is lonely. But on weekends, it is overwhelmed with Americans hoping to see their relatives on the other side of the border. People come from hours away just to have a brief encounter with their families. In Tijuana, during the weekdays is a different story. The beach has numerous people there enjoying themselves. Most have nothing but good things to say about the opportunity the park provides on the weekends for those seeking to see their families on the other side. “I have lived her for 20 years and I got involved in the border stuff in the early 2000s,” said Dan Watman, a member of the organization Friends of Friendship Park. “When families reunite with each other here, they can’t kiss each other or hug each other. They can only touch the pinky-tips of their fingers through a little square through the fence.”Robert Vivar, also a member of Friends of Friendship Park, has used the park to see his grandkids since he’s been deported. “My son has come here a couple of times and I’ve seen my granddaughters as well,” Vivar said. “One occasion, I was fortunate enough that the security gate was opened, and I was able to give my son and grandchildren a hug.”Vivar said the park is a symbol of the bridge two countries can build instead of walls. The park is open on weekends between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for families to see each other on both sides of the fence. 1760

Tucked away in the small town of Eaton, Colorado, there’s a time machine capsule dedicated to one type of technology, and one man who has dedicated 35 years of his life to this collection. “My museum is called Lee Maxwell’s Old and Unusual Collection,” said 89-year-old Lee Maxwell. “I took up this hobby about 35 years ago, and it’s turned into an obsession. My collection is unusual that’s for sure.”Maxwell collects washing machines. He is the owner of the only washing machine museum in the country. “Why? Well a lot of people ask me why,” Maxwell said. “Since I’m not a golfer or fisherman, and I don’t like to bungee jump, I couldn’t afford corvettes, so I chose washing machines.”Maxwell said he owns a washing machine from every state, some dating back to the 1800s. “Over 1,500 machines,” Maxwell said. “The number is kind of a secret though, because I told my wife, Barbara, I would stop at a thousand. Keep that under your breath. 1,500 machines, 1,500 stories.” For 35 years, Maxwell traveled the country collecting washing machines to bring back to his home of 17 acres. “I spent a lot of time here the last 35 years,” Maxwell said, while standing in his warehouse full of washing machines. “I have to find a good home for it. There are some folks around the US that are interested in it. I want to find a home close to northern Colorado. I’m eighty-nine years old now, I would like to go eleven more years to really see it blossom.” Maxwell said he has a few organizations interested, but he did not want to give any more details. He hopes it will continue to grow as the largest washing machine museum in the country. “There are three attributes you have to have to be a washing machine collector,” Maxwell said. “You have to have space, you have to be insane, and you have to have a saint for a wife. And I got all three.” 1851
