(KGTV)- School leaders in a north county school district are trying to figure out how to address a legal petition filed by their teachers' union.The San Dieguito Union High School District Board of Trustees held an emergency closed-door meeting Tuesday at Earl Warren Middle School in Solana Beach.A few dozen students and some parents gathered outside the school to protest the district's plan to return to in-person instruction in January."Our teachers have taught us to stand up for what's right, and we see that the board is not listening to their needs, their concerns, they're putting their lives at risk, so we are here to support our teachers," said student Andrea Gately.Parent Julie Bronstein said distance learning is not ideal, but she doesn't think it's safe for kids to return when the virus is surging."Why can't we just wait a bit more, get ourselves out of the danger zone, get beyond the surge, make sure teachers are able to be vaccinated to the extent possible, and then reopen in a grander fashion," said Bronstein.Late last Tuesday night, the San Dieguito Union High School District Board of Trustees voted to give students the option to return to school one day a week on January 4th, then five days a week for in-person instruction on January 27th.Parents like Jane Woltman say students should have returned to class months ago."When they asked if kids wanted to go back full time in October, 80% of those parents said yes, yet we didn't go back then. We weren't in the purple tier then," said Woltman.Woltman has two kids at La Costa Canyon High School."I just think the social well being of kids is diminishing. Kids are losing engagement, and basically, this is a teaching model that was not intended to be long term," said Woltman.Friday, the California Teachers Association filed a legal petition on behalf of the local teachers' union to block the January return.Duncan Brown is a counselor at Diegueno Middle School and Oak Crest Middle School. He's also the president of the San Dieguito Faculty Association. He says the district's plan violates the governor's regional stay at home order."It goes against CDC guidelines, it goes against CDPH rules, most districts have reconsidered reopening plans, but San Dieguito continues to move forward," said Brown.Under the state's health mandate, schools that were already open for in-person instruction were allowed to stay open when the county fell back into the purple tier. The union is challenging the district's definition of what is considered an open school."All the instruction is done through small cohorts, and we believe the intent of the reopening plan was if grades were going through a reopening. For example, 9th and 10th grade were invited back, then under those kinds of understandings, 11th and 12th graders would be able to continue the reopening as well," said Brown.Parents who believe kids should be back in school say the union is just delaying things."I just think it's a stall tactic, and the union doesn't want to go back period. I don't think that's the voice of a lot of teachers who are afraid of ramifications if they speak up," said Woltman.The board president says the district's reopening plan follows the guidance issued by The California Department of Public Health and includes detailed protocols for distancing and ventilation.Teachers in high-risk groups for the virus or with childcare issues can continue teaching remotely until January 27th, but the district hasn't decided beyond that. 3529

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A 31-year-old man was jailed Tuesday on suspicion of seriously injuring another man with a hatchet during a fight at an Escondido transit center, police said. Dispatchers received a call around 9:40 p.m. Monday from a person who reported that two men were fighting at the Escondido Transit Center on West Valley Parkway, west of Centre City Parkway, Escondido police Sgt. Mike Graesser said. Officers responded to the scene and found both men near the transit center suffering from serious injuries, Graesser said. Every morning at 7:30, as students start to filter in, Jim Witt and his fellow administrators at Lake Schools in Northwest Ohio take to their designated posts around the school’s various hallways.They greet students, joke with them—teasing one about his Air Jordan high-tops (this is LeBron country, after all)—and just generally touch base before the day officially begins.As superintendent of the 1700-student campus outside Toledo, Ohio, Witt says he probably knows their students on “a much more personal level” than others would at districts of a similar size.And knowing your students, he says, is key in the efforts to help prevent what feels like it’s become all too common: school shootings.  And that context has made the need for the morning pleasantries that much greater.“It makes us hyper sensitive to kids who may come in one morning and be really down or upset about something,” Witt says. “We try to get to the root of that problem for various reason, school safety being one of them.”Lake Middle School principal Katie Beard agrees that administrators and teachers need to be on the lookout for warning signs, adding that when you know the students, it’s really not that difficult to tell when something’s not right.“You can tell by the way a student walks in what kind of day they’re going to have, based on seeing them every single day,” Beard said, adding that if she notices a big difference in a student’s mood, she’ll prod a little bit to find out if it’s something more serious.“You just try to have a conversation with them right away to try to head it off, [asking things like] ‘Hey, what’s going on? But he’s definitely noticed a shift in recent years. “Myself and my admin team spend more time probably worrying about…the safety of kids and staff,” he says. “It’s gone beyond just the normal curricular issues," Witt said.And that “frustrates” him, he says, “but it’s a necessity.”The school has a series of cameras, covering the entrances and exits to the various buildings. And they have also sought training for their staff from groups like the non-profit Educator’s School Safety Network.But as a small district with limited funds, Witt says investing in new security technology—things like bullet proof windows, heavy duty doors-- isn’t really on the table.But even with all the funds in the world, he’s upfront that he’s still not sure he would invest much money in “hardening” schools, noting that nothing is “100 percent intruder-proof.”So he’ll continue with the “getting-to-know-you” behavioral approach—and giving his students a hard time about their choice of NBA-inspired footwear. 3413

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - Two children sparked a small fire in an Escondido church after finding a lighter in a classroom there, fire officials said.Escondido firefighters and police were dispatched just before 1 p.m. Sunday in response to a report of a possible structure fire somewhere near South Escondido Boulevard and West Seventh Avenue, Battalion Chief Mike Bertrand said. Officers arrived on scene first and discovered the blaze was inside the Iglesia Bautista Fundamental meeting house at 221 West Seventh Ave."Officers ensured that the building had been evacuated, as church services had just concluded, and confirmed that the fire was located in a second floor classroom," Bertrand said. "Escondido fire units arrived on scene and were able to contain the fire to the room of origin."Crews knocked down the flames in eights minutes, Bertrand said. Five engines and one water truck responded, and no firefighters or churchgoers were injured.A fire investigator responded to the scene and determined that two children started the blaze with a lighter they found in the classroom, Bertrand said. Fire officials said the incident is a reminder to ensure matches and lighters are stored safely and that all buildings have a fire evacuation plan. 1251
