(KGTV) - Families of the San Diego Unified School District participated in a telephone town hall Wednesday to listen in on a discussion between panelists Superintendent Cindy Marten and three SDUSD teachers. The school year is set to begin virtually Aug. 31 and the panel discussed what day-to-day classroom time will look like.Teachers shared some of the steps they’ve taken to prepare for the online learning and gave tips to families to keep students successful. Some tips included making sure parent information is updated to ensure accurate information on scheduling and supply pickup is shared, setting alarms on phones to keep students on track with their schedule and compensate for a lack of bells, and also creating a designated learning space for students.Related: San Diego Unified School District announces detailed online learning planThe panel, organized and hosted by Assemblymember Todd Gloria, said individual schools will share specific information on where and when families can pick up supplies, including books and computers. The teachers on the panel also assured families that the students would not spend the whole school day in front of a screen, but rather have some time with the teacher, some time with other students and some individual work time. They also added that older students will work on a quarter system instead of a semester system, which would allow smaller class sizes and fewer classes for each student.While the main message of the town hall was hope and teamwork between schools and families, parent Andrea Gallegos said she still has questions that went unanswered.“Is there a plan to transition back when we’re off the watch list now? Is there any kind of timeline for that? I’m frustrated,” she said.Despite the county being removed from the state’s watch list, the district said it plans to begin the 2020-21 school year with online instruction."You may recall that San Diego Unified announced on July 13 that it would start the school year with online instruction. That decision came before the governor announced (on July 17) that at least 90 percent of California schools would start the year with online instruction," SDUSD spokesperson Maureen Magee told this station in an email."The district continues plans to physically reopen schools as soon as it is safe to do so. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - With car horns blaring, cellphone video captured a fight breaking out at a busy intersection in San Diego near Montgomery High School.The incident played out at Palm Avenue and Beyer Way - just feet from the high school - as school let out Friday afternoon. In the crosswalk, there was a flurry off punches. A teen in a hoodie is recorded battering another student on the ground. Some other teens joins the fray and more punches are traded."It's stupid. Why have a fight so dramatic like that? It could cause a car accident," a student told 10News. We are not naming the student at the request of their family.The student doesn't know what sparked the fight, but says those involved were juniors. The student told 10News this was the third big fight on campus this year. "Just make us look bad. Students should set a good example for our school," the student said.There were no accidents, but some of those drivers did get out of their cars. A witness tells us some tried to stop the fight. In the now-viral video, a crowd of people spill across the crosswalk. The melee lasted more than 20 minutes before it broke up. Police arrived but did not make any arrests.Janet Paz, a mother of two students at the school, says it sends a bad message."Makes me feel worried that kids aren't safe in school," said Paz.A spokesperson with the Sweetwater Union High School District says they believe they've identified the three-to-five students involved and are mulling possible discipline. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Andrew Van Woerkom has always known he was adopted, but never dwelled on the past for too long.“The biggest wonders I always had was I wonder what she looks like, it would be cool to see somebody that looks like me. I wonder what her name is,” he said.The now 32-year-old San Diego man, like many, has had a roller coaster of a year in 2020. For him, the chaos stems from multiple aspects of life.His family grew from four to five this year after his wife gave birth to their third child. But this baby wasn’t the only addition to the family.Andrew signed up for a genealogy website and through the years has reached out to any distant relatives who pop up, hoping to gain some insight into his biological family. No one ever responded, until this past summer.“She says I’m your aunt so and so. I was there for your birth coach. This is your mom’s name. This is her number and email address and here’s a little message from her and it’s way more information than I ever thought I would get and it’s just this flood of emotion,” he said.This message turned out to be the key to his past. He found out his birth mom, Melissa Willis, had him at 19 and knew she wasn’t ready to become a parent, so she chose to keep the baby and give him up for adoption. She later went on to get married and have five more kids, but always wondered what had happened to her first son. So, in 2020, hearing from him answered many of her own questions.“Then I lost it. Because for 32 years I wondered is he dead in a ditch, is he in jail, is he abused, is he happy,” said Melissa.Both of them vividly remember their first time on the phone together.From Melissa’s perspective: “he said I’m grateful for the choice you made me and the life you gave me, and I said I did everything I did out of love, all I wanted was for you to be happy and healthy and have everything I couldn’t give you.”Andrew says for him, he felt like he had to get out a lifetime of emotion in a handful of minutes.“First five ten minutes of the phone conversation was just sobbing and just expressing all this gratitude and emotion that I didn’t know was pent up inside and all these feelings I had for a person that gave me life. That gave me such an awesome opportunity to have a shot and have a chance at life,” he said.Since then, the two have started introducing each other to their families.This excitement coming at a hard time. Andrew’s adoptive mother is battling cancer for the fourth time, so he’s balancing the joy of finding his birth mom with the stress of supporting his adoptive mom, but thankful for the positive parts of life this year.“At a time when we’ve had so much fear and worry about what’s going to happen in the future, to have those joys… our son being born, meeting my birth mom… just how impeccable is that timing? It’s really gotten us through this year,” said Andrew.Both say that their new relationship is not replacing any other relationships, rather adding to them.When asked if she would change anything about her past, Melissa said she has no regrets.“The very best life I could’ve given myself and my baby is the one that I gave. The one I gave him and his family and me and my family. And I’m so grateful for that choice I made 31 years ago,” she said.This holiday season, everyone has found a new meaning of the word ‘family.’“Family is what you love. Family is what’s close to you, what you hold dear and yeah *we’re definitely not a cookie cutter, molded family. There’s definitely more of a different dynamic to it but I’m okay with it,” said Andrew. 3579

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --Lanes of the southbound 805 freeway were closed Friday night, after a major crash north of the Home Avenue exit. San Diego police confirm an officer was nearly hit by a car while responding to the accident and made an urgent call for backup.The blue, four-door sedan involved in the crash was smashed up against an embankment when the 10News crew got to the scene. 10News Anchor Brian Shlonsky posted on the southbound 94, near the onramp to the 805, where officers were flagging traffic to notify them of the closure.  566

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A third gender option will be available for California drivers licenses and ID’s starting in 2019. The law, SB 179, was signed by Governor Jerry Brown in October. It will allow people to apply for a ‘non-binary’ gender marker if they do not identify as either male or female. “For me, it was surprising to see this change,” said Al Johnson, a transgender activist and member of Trans Family Support Services. Johnson is non-binary and uses pronouns they/them. But with that surprise, came excitement. “Not only does it mean we’re being recognized by society and the people around us but were also being recognized by government entities as valid and real people,” they said. Johnson says they know people who plan on changing their gender to non-binary, but so far, they have not decided to do it on their own license. “I’ve definitely considered it, but in the end I don’t think I’m going to,” they said. “I just came out to my parents and in my personal life I’m trying to navigate that.” The DMV’s website is encouraging those who want to apply for the change to schedule an appointment as early as January 2, 2019. 1154
