A night of excess at a Pittsburgh apartment ended with three people dead, four people hospitalized and a police department warning how quickly drugs can kill.Authorities responded to a report of an unconscious man in an apartment complex elevator around 2 a.m. Sunday. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Pittsburgh Director of Public Safety Wendell Hissrich said.Shortly later, paramedics responded to another man a few blocks away, outside, who was "somewhat conscious" and had symptoms similar to those of the first man. He was taken to a nearby hospital, Hissrich said.Police traced both men back to an apartment on the city's south side. There, they found five other people who also apparently overdosed.Hissrich said he believed the victims were men between about 30 and 50 years old."The victims -- including three people who died and four who remain hospitalized -- appear to have been at the same venue together, and then to have gone to a second location at a private residence where they apparently overdosed on drugs," 1049

America's Dairyland is in crisis. More and more Wisconsin dairy farmers are going out of business. Part of the solution might actually involve milk — but not in the way one might think.About 700 Wisconsin Dairy farms went out of business last year — more than two each day."The dairy industry has been struggling for a while, but now the problem has become acute and we must act and we must act now," said Wayne Weber, Dean of the College of Business, Industry, Life Science, and Agriculture at University of Wisconsin-Platteville.That action starts at a farm tucked away in the rolling hills of Southwest Wisconsin. Professor Tera Montgomery helps run the Pioneer Farm at UW-Platteville. The cows and calves are part of her classroom."It's a living and learning laboratory so there is something going on all the time," Montgomery said. "It's a working farm."Platteville is one of three UW schools hoping to get a share of million in research dollars from the state to start the first ever Dairy Innovation Hub — a center dedicated to tasks like finding new dairy products, but also looking for unconventional ways to use milk.One of those techniques involves combining manure and cheese byproducts in a digester, creating energy. Montgomery says that this energy could potentially run communities local to dairy farms.Students at the Pioneer Farm are also hoping to develop new products to help people with allergies or an intolerance to milk enjoy it."It's making sure we are making unique products that are going to be what the consumer wants and what the consumer needs," Montgomery said.It's not just about finding ways to produce more milk. Weber believes the research dollars will produce results for an industry that already contributes billion to Wisconsin's economy."It's going to provide an infrastructure by which we can work with, together, industry partners - researchers, to start to deal with those questions on how do we move the dairy industry into a positive and viable industry in the future," he said.Not only for America's Dairyland, but for America.The research money for the Dairy Innovation Hub made it out of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Revenue and Financial Institutions with a unanimous vote. A recent drug bust in Southern California yielded 18 pounds of fentanyl, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. According to authorities, that's enough fentanyl for 4 million fatal doses, or enough to overdose every single person in Orange County.Police say the threat of fentanyl is increasing exponentially. Orange County authorities "have seized more than 100 pounds of the deadly drug, setting the pace to more than double fentanyl seizures for the third year," according to a news release.Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, making even small amounts incredibly deadly."The threat this extremely potent drug poses to our community is increasing exponentially, not subsiding," Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said in a news release.According to the California Department of Health, statewide fentanyl deaths increased 614 percent from 2014 to 2018, jumping from 104 to 743 deaths. California's figures mirror a similar national uptick of fentanyl deaths. Among the more than 70,200 drug overdose deaths estimated in 2017, the sharpest increase occurred among deaths related to fentanyl and fentanyl analogs (other synthetic narcotics) with more than 28,400 overdose deaths, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The drug seizure in Orange County on October 16 that produced 18 pounds of fentanyl, which has a street value of .25 million, also yielded 5 pounds of heroin and half a pound of methamphetamine. After reports surfaced on Monday that Sen. Bernie Sanders told fellow Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren that a woman could not win the presidency, Sanders and Warren were asked to address the squabble directly.
