GENEVA, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The World Economic Forum (WEF) is "very proud" that it has managed to maintain "very positive" ties with China, a senior WEF official has said. "We all know that China is an important factor in the future evolution and development of worldwide economy. So we are all very interested in what China will be doing," said Andre Schneider, managing director and chief operating officer of the Geneva-based organization. In a recent interview with Xinhua before next week's opening of the 2009 WEF annual meeting, also known as the Davos Forum, in the Swiss Alpine skiing resort Davos. More than 40 heads of state or government, including Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, and some 1,400 business leaders, have confirmed their participation at the five-day meeting scheduled to deal with the ongoing financial crisis and other global challenges. Premier Wen's participation will certainly be "a unique opportunity" for the world to better understand what are the plans of the Chinese leadership to deal with the crisis, Schneider said. Schneider noted the first two WEF annual meetings of the new champions, dubbed "Summer Davos Forum," were both held in China, in Dalian in 2007 and Tianjin a year later. The success of the "Summer Davos Forum," a gathering of new multinational companies from China and across the world to explore the mechanisms of continued and sustainable growth, indicated the strong collaboration between the two sides, he said. The WEF's choice of China as the host of the "Summer Davos Forum" was "an absolutely right one," he said. Schneider noted that cooperation between the WEF and China started in 1979, when China first sent a delegation to the Davos Forum. China and its economic growth has been a topic of interest for participants at the Davos Forum in recent years. In June 2006, the organization opened a representative office in Beijing, which aims to deal with all interactions with China. "It's a clear sign of our deepened collaboration," he said.
BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- China held a reception here on Friday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the China-Japan Peace and Friendship Treaty signing, calling on both nations to make joint efforts to further boost bilateral relations. President Hu Jintao and visiting Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso attended the reception. Recalling the history of the Sino-Japanese relations, Hu said 30 years ago senior leaders, including late leader Deng Xiaoping and ex-Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda, made a strategic decision to sign the treaty. He called it an important historic document in bilateral ties since the normalization of relations in 1972. Hu said the treaty had for the first time nailed down the general direction of bilateral ties featuring peaceful co-existence and long-term friendship. He added it had played an important role in pushing forward the ties in a correct fashion. Since then, peace, friendship and cooperation remained in the mainstream of the relation despite some twists and turns, he said. The four political documents signed between the two countries had laid a political foundation for the long term stable development of bilateral ties, Hu said, adding both sides had made hard-won progress in cooperation in various areas. After the normalization of the ties, the political and economic exchanges between the two nations had developed quickly. On Oct. 23, 1978, China and Japan exchanged documents of ratification of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship during the visit of the then Chinese Vice Premier Deng to Japan. This had become one of the four important political documents (the other three are the joint statement in 1972, the joint declaration in 1998 and the joint statement in May) for the ties. Hu thanks all those who had contributed to cementing the China-Japan friendship, adding insightful officials of two countries, including the seven Japan-China friendship institutions, had made great efforts to push forward bilateral friendship, despite the variety of domestic and international situations. The Sino-Japanese relations were at a new starting point to create history and faced important opportunities for further development. "We are willing to work with the Japanese side to increase political mutual trust, intensify cooperation and friendly exchanges to advance China-Japan strategic and reciprocal relations," Hu noted. Aso highlighted the bilateral exchanges and cooperation of the past 30 years, attributing the development of the relation to people who were working hard to push forward the ties. China and Japan are permanent neighbors, and the relations between the two should be in the nature of indispensable partnership. Aso called on the two countries to continue their dialogue and exchanges at various levels and cement consultation and cooperation in aim to achieve joint development and help to promote the stability and prosperity of Asia and the world. Aso arrived in China on Thursday evening to attend the seventh Asia-Europe Meeting. It was his first visit since taking office last month.

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China should pay more attention to its grain security in rural reform, said Jia Qinglin, the country's top political advisor, here on Saturday. It should be a top priority to maintain grain production when the country develops modern agriculture, said Jia, chairman of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, when the third meeting of the CPPCC National Committee's Standing Committee concluded here. "China should stick to the most strict system to protect farming land." During the four-day meeting, senior political advisors reviewed the decision on rural development and reform made at the third Plenary Session of the 17th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee. They exchanged views and presented valuable ideas on rural reform, said a statement issued after the meeting. "We should realize new situations and problems China faces in rural economic and social development, as well as urgency and responsibility to push forward rural reform," Jia said. The CPPCC would work on proposals on system building, agriculture and public service development in rural areas. He also asked political advisors to watch and study the global financial turmoil's impact on the domestic economy and contribute their talent to the administration.
BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China said Friday it welcomes and supports the UN Security Council resolution on Gaza. "The resolution reflects the concerns and desires of the international community on the situation in Gaza," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in response to a question. China called for effective implementation by all parties concerned of the new resolution and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, Qin noted. China also urged Israel to withdraw its forces from Gaza, ensure the smooth operation of humanitarian aid activities and ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza at an early date, he said. Qin called on all parties concerned to continue the political process to achieve a just and reasonable settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli issue and realize the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and peaceful coexistence. The UN Security Council on Thursday adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza "leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces." The new resolution, drafted by Britain, was adopted with 14 voting in favor and the United States abstaining after a compromise was reached between Arab foreign ministers and their Western counterparts. More than 700 Palestinians reportedly died in 13 days of Israeli military action in Gaza, which was undertaken in retaliation for the firing of rockets into southern Israel by Hamas militants.
ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here on Monday that his country attaches great importance to its development of relations with Ethiopia. "My current visit to Ethiopia is aimed at bringing the existing all-round cooperative partnership to a new level and injecting new life into the traditional friendship between the two sides," said Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC). Wu Bangguo (L), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress(NPC), the country's top legislature, meets with Ethiopian President Girma Wolde Giorgis (R) in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, on Nov. 10, 2008. "This is my first visit to Ethiopia. During my visit I witness the Ethiopian people's affection towards the Chinese people, and Iextend my good wishes to the Ethiopian people," said Wu during his meeting with Ethiopian President Girma Woldegiorgis. "As a true friend of the Ethiopian people, we are happy to see the achievements made by Ethiopia in implementing the agriculture-led Industrial development plan in recent years. We are also happy to see that Ethiopia has become an example of how to meet the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ." "I yesterday had very good talks separately with Teshome Toga, speaker of Ethiopian Council of People's Representatives, and Speaker of Ethiopian Federal Council Degefi Bula, reaching many important consensuses," said the Chinese top legislator. During his talks with the two Ethiopian speakers, the two sides agreed to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two countries' legislatures as part of their efforts to push for improvement of people-to-people friendship, strengthening mutual political trust and promoting mutual benefit in economic cooperation, according to Wu. Wu is on a five-African nation tour. Ethiopia is the third leg of his two-week-long visit to Africa. For his part, Ethiopian President Girma said his country is satisfied with the better relations with China. The president said he is very happy with China's decision to set up an agricultural technology demonstration center in Ethiopia. He believed the demonstration center is conducive to furthering the agricultural cooperation between Ethiopia and China, improving Ethiopia's agricultural development level and helping the country's efforts to reduce poverty. During the talks, Wu appreciated Ethiopia's commitment to the one-China policy. Wu pledged that China will speed up the construction of the demonstration center, which helps deepen the realistic cooperation in areas like farming.
