SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir San Diego has filled the community with music, funded dreams, and kept African American history alive for three decades.The group started with a local alliance of ministers from different denominations who came together for an annual concert to raise funds for students aspiring to a career in visual and performing arts, according to the choir director Kenneth Anderson."I think they are woefully undervalued in our country the power of art and how it can connect and communicate and bring people together when we're so driven apart," 20-year choir member Dale Fleming said.In 1990, the singers decided to created the MLK Community Choir so they could sing year-round.Andersen said, "It was non-audition but somehow all of these different timbres and levels of musicianship come together to make a beautiful sound."The religious tone of the group has changed over the years. "Some don't really believe at all but we all believe in the power of music," Fleming said.They still sing gospel, and write their own hymns to keep Black history alive."A majority of the spirituals that survived were code songs. When they sang about leaders in the bible, especially Moses, but Jesus and God, that was code for Harriet Tubman," Anderson explained.The group has flourished, touring through seven countries, creating and selling CDs, even singing for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in 2004. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 21-year-old killed while driving across the trolley tracks near Encanto has been identified.The San Diego County Medical Examiner says Alex Garza, 21, was believed to be distracted, possibly on the phone, when he reportedly tried to drive his Toyota Prius across the tracks just before midnight at 60th Street and Imperial Avenue. The vehicle was struck by a trolley before it became pinned against a poll.San Diego Police and fire units responded to the scene where Garza was pronounced dead. 525

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Tens of thousands descend on San Diego International Comic-Con this week, bringing an economic boom to Airbnb hosts. According to Airbnb, guests travel to San Diego from 71 countries and every state in the U.S. during the weeks of Pride and Comic-Con. The company also says that 41,000 people rent from Airbnb during the same time period. Comic-Con may draw the masses, but Airbnb hosts say it’s the hospitality that keeps people coming back. 471

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The National Weather Service says that conditions are in place for a La Ni?a weather pattern in the fall and winter of 2020-21. That could bring warmer, drier than usual weather to San Diego over the next few months.By definition, La Ni?a happens when the water along the equator is colder than usual. That pushes the jet stream farther north and directs storms away from the Pacific Southwest region of the United States.Because of that, Southern California typically sees less rain during La Ni?a years."What that means for everyone is that our winters can be variable, meaning they can be all or nothing," explains National Weather Service Meteorologist Alex Tardy. "It doesn't necessarily result in more or less rain, though. You just have a very inconsistent winter in general with a La Ni?a pattern like we're seeing developed now."The numbers bear that out. According to the San Diego County Water Authority, San Diego averages 10.34 inches of rain every year, with most of it falling from December through February.But in La Ni?a years, the rainfall is usually below average. During La Ni?a in 2018, San Diego only saw 3.34 inches. A La Ni?a in 2017 brought 12.73 inches. La Ni?as in 2017 and 2012 got 8.18 and 7.90 inches of rain, respectively."The bulk of the historical cases have been somewhat below average," says Dan Cayan from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. "It's 10 to maybe 30% below what we would normally achieve in those in those core winter months."That's bad news for firefighters across California. Already this year, the state has set records for wildfire disasters, with 7,982 wildfires burning more than 3.6 million acres. A dry, warm fall and winter will prolong wildfire season."That's not a real welcome signal for us here in Southern California, particularly after this extended dry period and heatwaves," says Cayan. "A wetter winter this next year would have been a welcome relief. But the roll of the statistical dice right now does not look like they're in our favor."Tardy puts it more bluntly."We are a tinderbox," he says. "We're looking at fuel moisture that is not just dry the way it should be, but it is record dry."La Ni?a weather also brings more Santa Ana winds, which can help wildfires spread. Tardy says we can expect this to last for several months."The prediction is for the fall is to be warmer than average," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Surveillance video shows a couple at a Kearny Mesa home, targeting an American flag.John Dodds bought his flag two years ago and displayed it with a light outside his home on Atlas Street."My father was a Navy veteran, my brother was very patriotic and instilled it within me," Dodds said. "I want everyone to know how much I appreciate this country and what the veterans of this country do for us."A flag typically flies in front of Dodd's home 365 days a year. On Thursday morning, Dodds walked outside and saw the empty flag holder, before reviewing his surveillance video.Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, two people with backpacks - bandanas on their faces -  walked by. One of them walked up to his porch and yanked out the flag before she took off. Dodds posted the video on the Nextdoor app in hopes of tracking down those thieves - and his flag.        "Maybe it was a big joke to them, but I don't think they know how seriously most of us take the flag of the United States of America," he said. Dodds plans on getting another flag but is still holding out hope for it to be returned.
