Mental health has been a big concern for many people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, more than a month into the new school year, doctors are keeping an eye on teenagers and the difficulties they may be facing as the pandemic continues on."Students are still stressed about what's going to happen next, anxious about mixed information they may hear on the news, they may hear on social media, they may hear from their friends in school and they're just trying to figure out what’s going to happen and how long is this going to last and when are things going to get back to normal," says Dr. Christina Conolly, a school psychologist and members of the National Association of School Psychologists.Dr. Conolly says some students are now grappling with anxiety and depression along with the added stress of school.There could be lasting effects on some teenagers who have been isolated for so long."Potentially, I would say not just for teenagers, but for young children and adults, as well. We’ve not experienced an event like this since the pandemic in the early 1900s," says Dr. Conolly.Mental health officials at schools are honing in on children and teens who might be vulnerable and in need of someone to talk to. Dr. Conolly says her school is even launching a new program centered around students' social and emotional wellbeing."In my school district, we have developed student well-being teams at all of our schools. We have referral forms for teachers to go and refer students who are in need of support. We’ve been doing what we call student psychoeducational lessons for all of our students pre-K through 12th grade," says Dr. Conolly.Stress management and mental health is a priority for Parker Pediatrics and Adolescents in Colorado. Pediatrician Dr. Brian Stanga conducts mental health screenings with all patients when they come in for a check-up."We ask them about things like stress level, stress and then if so, how many days a week are they feeling stressed? Is it greatly impacting their quality of life or not greatly impacting their quality of life," says Dr. Stanga.The pediatric practice also has four child and adolescent psychologists on staff. In March, pediatrician visits were down 50% but psychologist visits remained at 100% of normal."One of our core mission statements is we believe in the whole child, whether physical, mental and emotional health. It is all intertwined and that’s pretty clear from a lot of studies. If you're stressed, it elevates your heart rate, your blood pressure, all those things which in then affects your physical health," says Dr. Stanga.So what can parents do to help guide their teens and younger children through this stressful time?"Finding something that you all enjoy that you can do as a family. Talk with each other, have dinner with each other. I know some of these are things people hear and sound a little corny but these are truly things that can help," says Dr. Conolly.Dr. Conolly says educating parents about substance abuse and suicide prevention is also key right now. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The family of Breonna Taylor and their attorneys reacted Friday to the grand jury's decision not to bring homicide charges against the Louisville officers who shot and killed the 26-year-old in March.Watch their comments below:In a press conference led by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, he and the other lawyers called for the transcripts in the grand jury proceedings to be released.“When we think about this grand jury proceeding, if you want us to accept the result, release the transcripts, so we can have transparency,” said Crump.During the briefing at Louisville’s Jefferson Square Park, attorney Lonita Baker questioned whether Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron even presented the grand jury with charges on behalf of the killing of Taylor.“Don’t tell us the grand jury made this determination, if it was your office’s determination,” said Baker.Following the attorneys’ remarks, a family member read a statement on behalf of Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer. In it, she said her daughter died because the system failed her.“Cameron alone didn’t fail her, but it ended with a lack of investigation failing her,” said Palmer. “The officer who told a lie to obtain a search warrant failed her. The judge who signed the search warrant failed her. The terrorist who broke down her door failed her. The system as a whole has failed her.”Palmer also said she never had faith in Cameron to begin with.“I knew he was too inexperienced to deal with a job of this caliber,” said Palmer. “I knew he had already chosen to be on the wrong side of the law. The moment he wanted to the grand jury to make the decision, what I had hoped was that he knew he had the power to do the right thing, that he had the power to start the healing of this city, that he had the power to help mend over 400 years of oppression.”Palmer was reassured Wednesday of why she has no faith in the legal system or the police that she said are not made to protect Black and brown people.“But when I speak on it, I’m considered an angry Black woman,” said Palmer. “But know this, I am an angry Black woman. I am not angry for the reasons you would like me to be, but angry because our Black women keep dying at the hands of police officers, and Black men, angry because our children are dying at the hands of police officers, and I’m angry because this nation is learning that our Black women, dying at the hands of police officers, and this is not OK.”Palmer said the world was robbed of a “queen” who was just starting her life.“You didn’t just rob me and my family, you robbed the world of a queen, a queen willing to do a job that most of us couldn’t stomach to do, a queen willing to build up anyone around her, a queen who was starting to pave her path,” she said. LUBBOCK, TX — A 9-year-old girl from Texas who has been missing since 2016 was found safely on Monday after the story of her disappearance was featured on the television show "Live PD".Mariah Martinez was last seen on October 18, 2016, when she was taken from her home in Lubbock, Texas.On Friday night, the A&E show had a segment that chronicled the events that led to Mariah's disappearance. According to Fox News, Mariah's mother, Amanda, was close to losing custody of her three children and decided to take them and flee instead of going to court.A court order was issued after Amanda’s boyfriend allegedly punched Mariah's 5-year-old brother in the nose and threatened to kill the family by driving their car into a pond.The Live PD segment explained that in January 2017, police were tipped off about the family's whereabouts.
