SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It all started when La Jolla Shores resident, Penne Horn, had a birthday coming up."It started as a joke. My son asked what I wanted for my birthday and without any thought the words flew out of my mouth 'I want an ice cream maker,'" Horn said. The rest you could say is history.Since the day she received her wishlist item, she like many of us, spent time indoors with her new addition. "I started making ice cream. I just had too much of it and thought there's gotta be something I can do with this," Horn described. So she began to give it away to neighbors. It was so good that nearby residents with a sweet tooth wanted more and insisted on paying her, when a light a bulb went off. "I was hearing stories of families who got dogs in beginning of COVID, then lost their job and couldn't feed family let alone their dogs. I thought I will make the ice cream and ask people for donations. They'll donate and I'll buy dog food, and take it down to St. James church where they'll distribute it." Then new ideas kept getting added to the mix."One lady came to me and said I'll donate whatever if you make an ice cream named after my dog." Then, Twoee's Howling Good Ice Cream was born, named after her own sweet furry companion. "I draw all these different characters of dogs and name the ice cream after their dog."Horn's a former member of the Scripps and Humane Society boards, and she's always given back to the community. "It's part of my life, it's part of who I am."This time around, her community service was something new, a bit more sweet and born out of a pandemic. "There's a little silver lining if you look for it, I never would've started this if it hadn't been for the pandemic. There's good in everything." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local nurses are rallying for more protective equipment at our hospitals. 10News spoke with healthcare workers treating patients with coronavirus who say they're terrified for their own safety. ICU nurse, Michael Kennedy, describes what it's like on the front lines of Covid-19 at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. "As you can imagine it is kind of chaotic," said Kennedy. "We're basically having to beg for masks."He, like many other health care workers, is raising a sobering flag, saying they do not have enough face masks to protect themselves. Kennedy says they've been instructed to wear bandanas instead. USCD nurses held a rally to fight back against the shortage Friday morning. "We’re already rationing supplies and we are not getting the kind of transparency we need from UCSD, from state and local officials about what we have."It's a problem reported nationwide. The demand for personal protective equipment is soaring past supply. Here in San Diego, 10News has covered stories of the community coming together to fix that problem by donating supplies and even sewing together homemade masks. County Supervisor Greg Cox acknowledged the problem at a press conference Thursday. "We had a problem with the N95 masks that were in short supply," said Cox. Kennedy is now hoping the problem doesn't get even worse. "If we experience a surge tomorrow, would we have the kinds of things we need or would we be wearing trash bags?10News reached out to UCSD who provided the following statement from Michelle Brubaker, Associate Director of Communications and Media:"Currently, UC San Diego Health has sufficient supplies of personal protective equipment, including masks and respirators, to meet the needs for patients and health workers alike.But like all health systems across the region and country, we are pursuing every avenue to diversify and increase our supply and to ensure continuing, effective levels of protection, not just in the moment but for weeks and months to come. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local activists spoke out in Escondido Wednesday denouncing a recent ICE sweep in San Diego County that resulted in the arrest of 115 people. While agents say the raids targeted convicted criminals and people who'd been previously deported or ordered deported, those holding the protest say the tactics used are unfair and unnecessary.They urged the immigrant community to know their rights and reach out for help from experienced immigration attorneys.  496

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside an MCAS Miramar courtroom Thursday, the military held a preliminary hearing for a Navy corpsman who's charged in connection with the death of a fellow Navy corpsman, HM3 Michael Vincent De Leon. A corpsman is a type of medic.ABC 10News' cameras were not allowed inside, where accused corpsman HM1 Ryan Dini appeared in his military fatigues alongside his private counsel."A cover-up is what I felt [happened] from the get-go," Jose De Leon told ABC 10News just after the hearing. He has suspected a possible cover-up since his 30-year-old son died on the Twentynine Palms military base last year.At Thursday's hearing, the prosecution argued that HM1 Dini should face additional charges related to negligence. He's already charged in part with dereliction of duty resulting in death and drunk and disorderly conduct. HM1 Dini has 19 years of service with the military.The prosecution stated that HM1 Dini and a handful of others service members including Michael were at a house party on-base where alcohol was flowing, and guns were being dry-fired the night of the death.HM1 Dini's defense denied any wrongdoing."[HM1 Dini] being the most senior individual at this going-away party failed to protect not just Michael but everyone there because they were in danger when these firearms came out," said Jose De Leon. He told us in September, "We know that the firearm was dry-fired at Michael. The firearm was put away and it came out again and according to some statements they were horsing around, and the firearm came out again and that's when Michael was killed."He said that the shooting was first called in as a suicide but ABC 10News then learned from a source with close military ties that the death was being investigated as a homicide.A prosecutor named three other service members in the hearing. Their involvement remains unknown.The prosecution told ABC 10News that in about three weeks a judge will determine whether HM1 Dini's charges will be sustained and whether he'll face additional charges.Naval Criminal Investigative Service wrote to ABC 10News on Thursday that the investigation is still open. 2149
