Carrie Underwood silenced any questions about her readiness to return to the spotlight in perhaps one of the most anticipated performances of the 53rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards.PHOTOS: See red carpet arrivals from the 53rd annual Academy of Country Music AwardsUnderwood has been largely missing from the mainstream country music scene since a nasty fall at her Nashville home late in 2017. Just weeks after the Country Music Awards she fell down a set of stairs and later shared with fans that she had to have 40-50 stitches on her face. Adding some additional drama to her big return, Underwood did not walk the red carpet at this year's ACM Awards. ALSO: Sugarland dropping new track with Taylor Swift next weekWhile Underwood looked flawless onstage in a black and silver fringe dress, her vocals clearly dominated the moment as she belted out her new single, "Cry Pretty". GALLERY: TAKE A LOOK INSIDE THE 53RD ANNUAL ACADEMY OF COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDSShe got a standing ovation that went out for a measurable time inside the MGM Grand Arena as fellow country music performers and fans welcomed her back to the main stage. Fellow singer and winner of three ACM Awards Miranda Lambert touched on Underwood's performance backstage after winning Female Vocalist of the Year."It makes me proud to be a woman in this industry when I see her stand up there and do that," Lambert said.  1431

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - After hundreds of signs and fences along the trails at the Carlsbad Ecological Reserve are ripped from the ground, Fish and Wildlife is now setting up a specialized enforcement team. Secret cameras set up around the 500 acre reserve caught dozens of bikers ripping up signs, cutting fence wire and vandalizing property.Fish and Wildlife representative Peter Tira told 10News this is nothing new."We're not dealing with recreational mountain bikers, we're dealing with folks who disregard the law and believe the law doesn't apply to them," said Tira.Starting Saturday, April 6, Fish and Wildlife enforcement officers will hand out citations to all bikers who are caught riding the trails. Each citation comes with a 0 fine. "We've installed about 500 signs on this property almost all of which have been taken down or vandalized. On each of the signs it says 'No Bicycles'," said Tira. However, many mountain bikers who showed up to the trails Wednesday told 10News this is a popular spot for many in the Carlsbad area. Ivan Sekanovich comes to ride these trails at least once a week and is disappointed that Fish and Wildlife are letting the actions of a small group of bikers ruin it for the rest of them."For the most part, people know where they're supposed to hike and the bikers know where to bike," Sekanovich said. 1358

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Prosecutors Wednesday say two transients accused of a deadly home invasion robbery this week stabbed the victim 50 times in the face, neck, and back.Ian Bushee, 37, and Malissa James, 26, are both accused of breaking into a home in the 1800 block of Outrigger Lane just after midnight Monday. During the break-in the victim, identified as 63-year-old Marjorie Gawitt, was stabbed multiple times.Gawitt was still able to call 911 to report the incident and was conscious and breathing when police arrived. She was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where she died of her injuries.RELATED: Police identify suspects in deadly Carlsbad stabbing, burglaryBushee and James fled the scene in Gawitt's vehicle, according to police. The vehicle was found in San Marcos and the two were arrested in the 4800 block of Park Drive later Monday. Each has been charged with homicide, burglary, conspiracy, and auto theft. Bushee was also charged with accessory after the fact. James also also charged with torture. The pair was already on probation in San Bernardino for residential burglary. Both defendants pleaded not guilty of all charges.Bail was not set for Bushee or James, as they were determined to be a threat to the community. Both face the death penalty. A readiness hearing is scheduled for March 21, and a preliminary hearing is set for March 27. 1377

BURIEN, Wash. – Scott Mandella is a detective in Washington state. He is part of the harm reduction unit with the Burien Police Department, which operates a little differently than what most think of when they think of cops.Tara Moss is the project director for LEAD King County.“LEAD is a program that addresses public health and public safety needs with direct service, harm reduction framework and long-term engagement with individuals,” said Moss.LEAD started in Seattle in 2011 and operates in 30 cites across the U.S. It’s a program which has social workers work with law enforcement to help keep people out of jail and minimize their interactions with police.“They think they’re a good fit for LEAD, they can make a decision to divert that individual into case management services, if they agree to do so. So, instead of arresting someone and putting them in jail, they do a warm hand off, handing off to a case manager who does outreach and engagement with that individual,” said Moss.Does that sound familiar? Groups across the country have proposed defunding or abolishing the police. This model is what a lot of them are talking about.“You throw a cop at someone drinking in the park, and if someone still had that alcohol addiction, we’re going to keep going back to the park over and over and over again,” said Ted Boe, the police chief in Burien. He says his department was first in line to sign up for the LEAD program when the opportunity presented itself. He says it was time for the city to try something else.Bridget Scott is a case worker with LEAD.“Addiction or some of these other issues is not a straight line, and you can’t just tell somebody you’re going to be sober from tomorrow on, but realizing there’s going to be some zig zagging along the way,” said Scott. We spent an hour with Bridget looking for some of her clients, but didn’t find any.So, we met up again with Detective Scott Mandella. He’s worried about making sure one Burien resident gets to the hospital safely.“Gary. Gary, your brother’s here, and you’re going to be all right,” said Mandella. One of the people who called in the incident was the mayor of Burien, Jimmy Matta, who just happened to be running errands nearby. His family deals with a lot of the same issues other residents deal with.“My uncle is an alcoholic, and exactly what I’ve just seen here is what I end up doing with him, so these are real issues and even though I’m an elected official, you know I’m just like everybody else, what I can do for my uncle. My father passed away in Burien, Washington, of a drug overdose, heroin overdose,” said Matta.Everyone from the mayor to the cops, to the social workers, to the residents of Burien is tired of trying the same old thing: arresting people with substance abuse and mental health problems and hoping the problem goes away. They’re hoping this new way gives them a chance. 2892

CAMP PENDLETON (CNS) - A man was killed on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton Saturday morning when his Chevrolet Suburban overturned, landed on the right side of the freeway and was struck by a second car.The deadly sequence of events happened a little before 3 a.m. on the northbound side of I-5 past Basilone Road, near San Onofre State Beach and not far from the Orange County line.A 25-year-old San Clemente man was behind the wheel of the Suburban when it left the road and went up an embankment before flipping over and coming to rest on the right shoulder, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe said.Shortly afterward, a Nissan Rouge driven by a 46-year-old Tijuana man approached the wreck and struck the disabled Suburban, Latulippe said.Passing drivers stopped to assist the Suburban driver, who was found unresponsive outside his car on the right shoulder. It's unclear if he exited the SUV after the initial crash, or was thrown from it during the second collision, Latulippe said.Emergency personnel from the Camp Pendleton Fire Department headed to the crash, but the Suburban driver died at the scene, Latulippe said. The man's name was not immediately released. No information on the condition of the Rogue driver was available.Drugs and alcohol were not considered to be factors in the crash, Latulippe said.Northbound lanes of I-5 were congested through the area for about an hour after the crash while officials investigated. 1460
