Doctors are concerned seasonal affective disorder, also referred to as SAD or "the winter blues," could be a lot more prominent this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.“It is going to be more challenging this year than others, certainly going through all the stress we’ve been dealing with during this global pandemic,” said Dr. Eric French, a psychiatrist with the HealthONE Behavioral Health and Wellness Center.SAD is a form of depression brought on by multiple factors, including less daylight and more time indoors. It can be treated with a number of therapies and medications, but even that looks different because of the pandemic.“But certainly, Zoom calls might not feel as personal as a visit, but quite frankly, it works and it’s certainly a lot better than isolating,” said French.French says telehealth works, as does group therapy, light therapy and sticking to a strict schedule.“We want people planning their day instead of just kind of hibernating and ending up in their pajamas on their couch and not taking care of themselves,” said French. He says that historically, October is one of the busier months for adult behavioral health. They are experiencing a surge in hospitalized patients due to the pandemic, in part because substance abuse and suicide attempts are up.French also says avoid marijuana and alcohol to deal with anxiety or depression. Instead, focus on getting outside, eating right, sleeping well and staying socially connected. 1469

Don't be too surprised if you see trick-or-treaters doing the "backpack boy" on your doorstep this Oct. 31.According to Google's annual Freightgeist report, costumes from the hit video game Fortnite will be the most popular this Halloween, both nationally and in San Diego.Fortnite registered as the most popular costume search in 43 out of 50 states. The only states Fortnite didn't lead in searches were Alaska (Mermaid), Arkansas (Dinosaur), Idaho (Unicorn), Oregon (Dinosaur), South Dakota (Spider-Man), and Utah (Unicorn). The pop culture phenomenon burst onto the scene when it was released last year. And Fortnite won't likely be the only video game costume out and about in San Diego. According to Google's analytics, video game costumes make up about 4 percent of local searches.Nationally, Spider-Man, unicorn, dinosaur, and witch rounded out the top five costume choices.Google's top 10 costume searches (in order): 971

Do long lines get you down? Walmart has a plan to help eliminate the stress shoppers get when waiting in long lines. The company’s new system is called “Check Out with Me.” First, a Walmart associate scans your items with their special, mobile device. Then, they’ll swipe your credit card right there, before handing you the receipt. The process eliminates having to wait in line for a cashier.  Marketing professor Darrin Duber-Smith at MSU Denver says consumers want options, and the main option they want is convenience. He says two companies in constant competition are Walmart and Amazon.Amazon recently announced their plans to open 3,000 brick and mortar stores-- that will be cashierless—by 2021.As for Walmart’s new checkout program, the company plans to position workers in the busiest sections of the store. The program will begin in Walmart Superstores across the U.S. Thursday.  912
