(KGTV) - Evacuees from the Valley Fire began to head home Thursday morning as Cal Fire lifted evacuation orders throughout the area."We're trying to head out early," said Deehorn Valley resident Dale Elliott. "That way we can get everything straightened up, cleaned up try to put things back."Elliott's family is one of 140 families the Red Cross helped over the last week. Evacuees were offered food, first aid, hotel rooms and more.Red Cross Regional CEO Shawn Mahoney said they served 1,200 meals on Wednesday alone.This was Elliott's first time having to evacuate, and he told ABC 10News, "With the dogs and my mother-in-law visiting and all of our stuff, we thought we should evacuate just to be on the safe side.”Elliott checked on his home Tuesday to make sure it hadn't been damaged in the fire. He said he'll have to clean out the refrigerator, but that's the only issue.Many others weren't as lucky.Cal Fire said 30 homes and 29 other buildings were destroyed in the fire. As the Valley Fire continues to burn, some areas are still under evacuation orders or warnings.The Red Cross says they will keep the shelters open as long as they're needed. 1186

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -- From the outside, it looks like a typical white clapboard chapel. Step inside, though, and you’ll find yourself transported to thousands upon thousands of memories about man’s best friend.“It was it was a labor of love for sure,” said Scott Buckingham, with the nonprofit Friends of Dog Mountain. “They were constantly making trade-offs: ‘eating or should I buy materials for the chapel?’”“They” are Stephen and Gwen Huneck, husband and wife artists, who bought an old dairy farm outside St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and proceeded to build a chapel in honor of dogs.Scott Buckingham heads up the nonprofit running it all.“Steven and Gwen's background was in art, in wood prints and furniture and sculpting, and their primary subject matter was dogs,” he said. “So, when they purchased this property that was their intent, was to make this a place that served dogs and honored our relationship with dogs and pets.”They finished the chapel 20 years ago.Since then, with 30,000 people visiting each year from around the country and the world, the walls of the chapel have become a host to personal and emotional notes, cards and photos, inches thick, in honor of departed dogs.“When that relationship comes to an end, we're left very empty,” Buckingham said. “And what you see here are notes that are trying to capture and express their gratitude for a really, really fantastic relationship.”One visitor noted, it “brings back memories of my last dog. I’m going to be in tears if I don’t start thinking of something else.”Yet, it’s more than just a dog chapel. It’s a whole mountain property of 150 acres called “Dog Mountain.” There’s trails for dogs to explore, along with wide open spaces to run in and several ponds to swim in.“A place where they can come and their dogs can be free and play,” Buckingham said.Stephen and Gwen Huneck have since passed away, but their artwork – mostly about dogs – lives on in a gallery on the property and, of course, in the dog chapel they built from scratch.“It's a really profound experience to come here and spend some quiet time reading the notes,” Buckingham said. “You'll see, even when I think about it and I talk about it, it just chokes you up a little bit. Some Facebook users can now see whether their data may have been obtained by political data firm Cambridge Analytica.On Monday, the social media giant began rolling out a "see how you're affected" tool at the top of News Feeds to inform users if they're among the tens of millions of people who had their data improperly harvested by Cambridge Analytica.The full roll out will happen over time, so not all users will see the link at the same time.Users who were not affected will see a different link highlighting which apps are connected to their Facebook accounts and what data those third parties can see. The link also directs users to a tool that allows them to disconnect apps from accounts.Last month, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised to "show everyone a tool at the top of your News Feed with the apps you've used and an easy way to revoke those apps' permissions to your data."Facebook has also said it will reviews thousands of apps to search for additional abuse."If we find developers that misused personally identifiable information, we will ban them and tell everyone affected by those apps," Zuckerberg said.Facebook has been under fire since the Cambridge Analytica news broke last month. The controversy has raised questions about whether the social media giant does enough to protect user information.Last week, Facebook said Cambridge Analytica may have had information on about 87 million Facebook users without the users' knowledge. Previous reporting had put the number of users at about 50 million.The data obtained was originally collected by University of Cambridge professor Aleksandr Kogan who used an app called "thisisyourdigitallife," which offered a personality test. Facebook users who downloaded the app granted it permission to collect data on their location, friends and things they Liked. The data collection was allowed by Facebook at the time.However, Facebook has said that Kogan violated its terms of service by giving the information to Cambridge Analytica.Facebook banned Kogan and Cambridge Analytica from its platform last month ahead of a New York Times investigative report about how the data was passed on.On Tuesday, Zuckerberg will appear before Congress to discuss the data controversy.  2255

(KGTV) - The City Council in Solana Beach wants to make it illegal to sell any kind of flavored tobacco within the city."What we're doing right now is a reaction to what is literally an epidemic," says Councilmember David Zito.He says the Council has seen the numbers from the CDC and other health agencies showing a rise in underage smoking, mostly related to the increase in e-cigarettes. That's why they're taking such a drastic step."This is not a safe thing to do and we need to take these kind of precautions," says Zito.Under the proposed ban, stores in Solana Beach wouldn't be allowed to sell any kind of flavored tobacco. That means menthol cigars, flavored hookah tobacco, flavored cigars, e-cigarettes or anything else that has a "distinguishable tast or aroma or both, other than the taste or aroma of tobacco, imparted by a Tobacco Product or any byproduct produced by the Tobacco Product."Right now, the ban would only affect a small handful of stores in the city. The two gas stations within Solana Beach already limit their sales of flavored products to just menthol. There are a few other convenience stores that sell e-cigarettes and other flavored products.
