SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A pursuit sparked an officer-involved shooting in Imperial Beach late Saturday night. According to police, officers tried to pull over a Ford F-150 that was reported stolen around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on the 1900 block of Dairy Mart Road. Police say the driver didn’t stop, instead driving into a cul-de-sac, making a u-turn and driving toward officers. “Believing his partner was going to be run over, one officer fired his service weapon to defend the other officer,” police said in a news release. At some point during the pursuit, the suspect threw a handgun out of the truck. The woman has since been located while police continue to search for the suspect. Homicide detectives have been called to investigate due to an officer firing his weapon, police say. It’s unclear whether or not the suspect was hit. Police say the officer who fired at the suspect is a three-year veteran of the department. No officers were injured. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local wildlife researcher is being remembered after he died Thursday at a remote canyon in San Pasqual Valley.David Bittner, 75, of Julian, died what he loved doing. He was replacing batteries on wildlife cameras in the Brady Canyon area, when he fell at least 50 feet. The county's Medical Examiner says Bittner called to a friend there with him, but was pronounced dead at the scene shortly later after crews pulled him to safety.Bittner co-founded the Wildlife Research Institute with his wife and devoted his life to the cause, according to Molly Jager-Begent."He would tag eagles all over the world and follow their paths to figure out what was really happening in the world of wildlife," Begent said.RELATED: Man dies after falling 50 feet off Escondido cliffBegent said she and her husband donated a portion of their ranch off Highland Valley Road in Ramona to the Wildlife Research Institute. Lined inside the ranch are wildlife photos captured by Bittner, another passion of his."He was just really dedicated. He had a passion," Begent says. For decades, Bittner led a free "hawk watch" on Saturdays during the first two months of the year, where biologists would teach the community about birds and their relationship to raptors.Begent said the wildlife expert helped educate thousands on the importance of wildlife preservation, even purchasing 3,000 acres and gifting it to the county as a wildlife preserve, according to Begent."His life was dedicated fully to his love of wildlife and wild places, helping educate thousands on the balance of preservation and healthy appreciation of wildlife while protecting their habitat first and foremost," said Katie Quint, who worked closely with Bittner.Thursday, Bittner was replacing batteries near the location of a threatened Golden Eagle's nest, according to Quint. "Dave has been advocating for San Diego County’s Golden Eagle population with local agencies by ensuring the long-term documentation of their nesting ecology over the past 31 years," said Quint.Saturday, a special tribute is planned for Bittner from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Begent Ranch in Ramona, the area where he connected so many to his love of wildlife. 2210

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat and power boat collided near the Coronado Bridge Sunday afternoon, injuring four people, according to San Diego Harbor Police.A good Samaritan drove by and noticed people floating in life jackets as their boat took on water. He picked up nine people and ferried them to Pepper Park. "It's just what you do you're a boater, it's what you're supposed to do, you help out on the water, people have helped us and we've helped other people," Kary Brownlee said.The damaged powerboat, a Bayliner, was towed back to the Pepper Park launch ramp where four passengers were evaluated for minor injuries. No one was taken to the hospital.The sailboat cruised back to Coronado on its own power."All it takes is a split second, when the captain is not paying attention that could cause a collision," boat safety advocate Amos Zolna said. He explained sail boats generally have the right of way, as they are harder to maneuver, compared to a power boat. Zolna said it's hard to navigate near the bridge, due to the large pillars that create blind spots.Harbor Police reported the 911 call at 1:28 p.m. They are investigating the cause of the crash and if any alcohol was involved. 1204

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A La Jolla hardware store is being forced to remove their popcorn machine they say was used to give the buttery treat to customers for free over the last 25 years.According to a food inspection report, the Meanley and Son Hardware on the 7700 block of Girard was investigated for serving popcorn without a permit."Everybody has had fun with this until now, but we have to obey the law," said co-owner Bob Meanley.One of the store's owners says the inspection happened after someone complained.A customer reportedly saw another person reach into the popcorn machine barehanded."I’m sorry we can’t continue with the popcorn, but we’ll do it with everything else," added Meanley.In the report, the inspector said the small Gold Medal brand popcorn maker was seen in use and with “popped popcorn prepared.”The report forces the hardware store to stop making popcorn and to remove the popcorn machine from the building.If the shop wants to give away popcorn, according to the health department, they’ll have to go through the permitting process. A process which will also legally require that the store install three compartment sinks. The store says staff regularly cleaned the machine and refilled it with popcorn throughout the day for customers to enjoy.The hardware shop has an extensive history in La Jolla.
