SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista city officials have placed the controversial statue of explorer Christopher Columbus in storage "out of public safety concerns."City spokeswoman Anne Steinberger said the bronze statue was removed early Friday morning from its platform at Discovery Park in the Rancho Del Rey neighborhood.The Columbus statue has been at the park on 700 Buena Vista Way for nearly three decades, but it has been a frequent target of vandals. Last Columbus Day, the statue was doused with red paint.The city had been hearing arguments for and against the removal of the statue with many people -- including local Native American tribes -- calling the sculpture a symbol of hate, theft of land, and genocide. The debate became heated Feb. 26 when representatives from both sides faced off in a Chula Vista Human Relations Commission meeting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Business associations in North Park and Normal Heights are pushing back against a plan organizers say could bring more customers to their parts of town.Leaders from both business improvement districts are expressing coronavirus-related concerns over a scavenger hunt the city and the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition are planning beginning Aug. 12 and lasting two weeks. "It's unpredictable, especially in this environment, when you're going to invite people to get out of their house for the first time," said Scott Kessler, who leads the Adams Avenue Business Association. "We just don't know what to expect."Organizers say the event is all about social distancing. Participants download an app called Scavify, which they use to do things like find landmarks or answer trivia questions. Local businesses decide how much they want to be involved. "Most of this engagement is done outside, socially distanced, and it's just about highlighting businesses and community organizations," said Sylvie Froncek, program director at the Bike Coalition. But the business organizations say they are concerned about a lack of organization and late notice. "We welcome shoppers, diners and people in need of essential services but we do not support any gatherings that cannot be managed or overseen for safety protocols. Bike events have traditionally brought great benefit to North Park because of the number of people who see them as a way to connect with friends while enjoying outdoor activity," Angela Landsberg, who directs the North Park Main Street Association, said in a statement. "Unless these events can be managed to ensure proper safety for our community at this time we believe they could do more harm than good."Others say that fear is unfounded. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities have identified one of the teens killed after he was believed to have mistakenly jumped from a bridge following a crash on a Carmel Valley freeway. According to the medical examiner, 18-year-old Ruben Ortiz Jr., died after jumping from the bridge on State Route 56 near Carmel Valley Road around 11 p.m. Tuesday. The other teen who died after jumping from the bridge was a 17-year-old male California Highway Patrol says was the driver of the vehicle. A family friend says the 17-year-old was Jesse Garcia. Witnesses told CHP that six people got out of the car, running across the freeway lanes toward the right shoulder to avoid oncoming traffic. Four people from the group then jumped over the right shoulder, not realizing they were jumping off the bridge, CHP says. The four fell 50-75 feet from the structure, and CHP officials said two males died at the scene.A 14-year-old girl and 15-year-old girl were taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with injuries of unknown severity.The two others from the group, who reportedly fled the scene after the crash, were located by police late Tuesday night, according to CHP. One of the teenagers is 14-years-old while the other is 15. Police say the responded to a crash on Broadway and North Avenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Boulevard Fitness in University Heights has closed its doors following a letter from the city threatening expensive fines and to force the business to close.The gym stayed open in the face of local coronavirus-related restrictions on indoor activities for fitness centers for more than a month, according to a letter from City Attorney Mara Elliott."To date, evidence we have reviewed shows your business has been out of compliance for more than 45 days.
