BOAO, Hainan, April 18 (Xinhua) -- China's economic stimulus package plan is already paying off, and positive changes have taken place in the economy, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Saturday.     "The situation is better than expected," Wen said at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference 2009.     The "swift" and "decisive" measures taken by China to deal with the crisis has proved essential for easing major problems in the economy, shoring up confidence and stabilizing expectations, said the premier.     The growth domestic production (GDP) of the world's third largest economy rose 6.1 percent in the first quarter, the slowest pace in a decade. He noted the urban employment rose as 2.68 million jobs were created in the urban areas in the first quarter.     The industrial output had gradually stabilized, and agriculture production was on the whole stable, he said.     "We should not, however, lose sight of the fact that the international financial crisis is still spreading, the basic trend of world economic recession is not reversed, problems in the financial system remained unsolved and the worsening of the real economy has been more serious than expected," he warned.     He said the crisis had presented China with great challenges in economic and social development including sharp decline in exports, greater difficulties in stabilizing agriculture production and increasing farmer's income, industry overcapacity, and slow recovery in industrial growth, and severe pressure of unemployment.

BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday congratulated Kim Jong Il, the top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on his reelection as chairman of the country's National Defense Commission.     Hu, also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, said in a congratulatory note to Kim that China is ready to work with the DPRK to further boost the good-neighborly, friendly and cooperative ties between the two nations.     The First Session of the 12th Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK reelected Kim as chairman of the National Defense Commission on Thursday.

JEJU, ROK, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), unveiled a new Confucius Institute here Saturday soon after his arrival.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, cut the ribbon for the Republic of Korea's 13th Confucius Institute, the Chinese-teaching institution overseas.     The institute was set up in Cheju Halla College, the largest private institute of high learning in Jeju Special-Governing Province of the Republic of Korea (ROK).     When addressing the opening ceremony, Li said that China and ROK were inter-linked geographically and culturally. "The cultural exchanges boast profound historic foundation and favorable realistic environment," he said. ROK is the last leg of Li's four-nation tour which has already taken him to Australia, Myanmar and Japan.

TAIPEI, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao's press conference on Friday has drawn positive comments in Taiwan, making the headlines in Saturday's local newspapers and leading to a rise in the stock market.     Mainstream newspapers on the island hailed Wen's remarks of "Even if I can no longer walk, I will crawl to Taiwan" as a big goodwill sign from the mainland toward improving cross-straits relations.     The China Times, besides devoting its front page to the press conference, ran an op-ed piece saying that the premier gave an amazing answer to the Taiwan-related question.     The article said Wen used ordinary language in his speech to stay close to ordinary Chinese people, which sounded sincere and showed greater confidence from the leader.     The United Daily News also widely covered the press conference, saying that Wen's remark that "We can launch new economic stimulus policies at any time" demonstrates confidence and hope.     Zhang Wuyue, director of the institute of mainland studies in Taiwan's Tamkang University, told Xinhua that the premier's words would have positive influences on cross-straits relations and help them toward peaceful development.     A senior staffer at a Taiwan investment company said that the premier's warm remarks have prompted the surge of stocks that were originally facing pressure to fall.     Taiwan's benchmark weighted index rose by 142.74 points, or 3 percent, to close at 4, 897.39 on Friday, the highest since November. BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has called for greater awareness of both hardships and opportunities presented by the global financial crisis in order to offset the impacts of the crisis.     In a speech to the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau on Tuesday, Hu said China must be prepared for the most difficult and complicated situations in the world economy and meanwhile make good use of or create development opportunities amid the transformation of international and domestic conditions.     The world economic situation was austere and complicated; the global financial crisis had yet to level out; and China's economic growth was under pressure of a slow-down, he said.     He said no fundamental changes had occurred in the country's basic economic development situation, its advantageous conditions for economic development, its accelerating trend of industrialization and urbanization, and the external environment of peace, development and cooperation.     "The strong Party leadership, the advantages of the socialist system, and the united efforts of our people of all ethnic groups are the strength for us to overcome the difficulties and withstand the impacts of the global financial crisis," he said.     The government should maintain the policy of giving top priority to increasing domestic demand while stabilizing external demand, he said.     He called for more powerful and efficient measures to increase domestic demand, consumer demand in particular.     He urged continuing to make the reform and opening-up a powerful driving force for economic growth, actively pushing forward reform in key areas and links.     Hu urged all Party committees and governments to deepen the implementation of the "scientific view of development" and "carry out the decisions and arrangements of the central authorities in a creative way".     Hu, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, presided over Tuesday's panel study of the Politburo, at which two scholars explained world economic situation and ways to boost economic growth.     The lecturers were Zhao Jinping, of the State Council's Development Research Center, and Bi Jiyao, of the Macro-economic Research Institute under the National Development and Reform and Commission.
