CLAIREMONT, Calif. (KGTV) -- A warning for the next time you drop a piece of mail in a postal collection box: a local thief may be getting creative to grab your mail.Around 7 pm Monday, along Mt. Everest Blvd, Dennis Fipps walked a few blocks from his home and dropped off a driver's license renewal in the blue box.The next morning, Fipps says a neighbor showed up at this door with his empty envelope.   In all, he believes that neighbor found torn mail strewn in the gutter for 8 to 10 neighbors. "I thought 'Omigosh! The check,'" said Fipps.     The check was made out to the DMV for . In the past several years, 10news has reported on stolen checks being washed: a chemical solution dissolving away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.     Fipps called his bank and stopped the check, then headed to the post office. "Their response was that the box had been fished," said Fipps.     In that fishy tactic, the fishing line is often a simple string, connected to a rodent glue trap, allowing the thief to grab onto envelopes and pull them out of the collection box.    "It's dastardly.  I'll say that much," said Fipps. Postal officials say 'fishing' is not common, but it does happen in the area. A spokesperson tells 10news almost all the local boxes have anti-fishing security measures, and they will now be looking at this collection box to see what went wrong. COLORADO SPRINGS — The COVID-19 pandemic continues to make an impact, especially to agencies who help kids who've been removed from their families because of abuse or neglect.One foster care agency in Colorado, Hope and Home, says they have over two hundred foster families with 80 recently licensed. Despite the pandemic, the organization says families are continuing to foster children and they haven't seen a decrease in interest."We are always on standby and ready to take care of kids when they come into care. They're always a need for foster families, but there's a greater need during the pandemic," said Jacquelyn Thurman- Wright. "With kids not being at school, they are not in the line of sight of teachers who are mandatory reporters. Sometimes we're seeing this abuse go on because these kids are flying under the radar and not being seen."The organization says COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the foster care system."The most obvious and immediate impact on Hope and Home is that we had to suspend in-person support groups because on a given night we could have 250 people in the building. But within a week, we were up and running on Zoom and Facebook live," said Thurman- Wright.Right now, Hope and Home is fully online and virtual but they're still taking inquiry phone calls and placing kids in foster homes.Sean and Mandy have been fostering since 2018 and didn't let the pandemic get in their way of adopting triplets and fostering a newborn baby."We didn't go to the courthouse because of COVID. So we had it on our couch via ZOOM with the judge," said Mandy.The couple says the pandemic hasn't made fostering easy."Visits are a lot harder, they're more virtual unless they're younger and that its really hard. Therapies, a lot of foster kids come in needing therapies and they're usually virtual," said Mandy.With the new restrictions, doctor visits are harder as well."So if one of the triplets have an appointment, even though they're triplets we can't bring the other two. We actually hired a nanny because of it," said Mandy and Sean.Even with the pandemic, it was not only important for Sean and Mandy but their children, that they continue fostering."We felt like this is what we had to do and then when we were getting our other foster baby. (AP) — A gunman opened fire inside a Southern California Costco during an argument Friday night, killing a man, wounding two other people and sparking a stampede of terrified shoppers before he was taken into custody, police said.Police swarmed the Costco after shots were reported at the huge store about 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) southeast of downtown Los Angeles.Witnesses told KCAL-TV that a man with a Mohawk haircut was arguing with someone near a freezer section when he pulled a gun and fired at least six shots.The man involved in the argument was killed and two other people were wounded, Corona police Lt. (KGTV) - Caltrans has begun installing spikes along the Coronado Bridge, designed to deter suicide jumpers. “It’s more of a psychological deterrent than anything else,” says Rhonda Haiston, the founder of the Coronado San Diego Bridge Collaborative for Suicide Prevention. Her group has campaigned to get barriers installed on the bridge.The four-inch spikes may not serve as a physical barrier, but they may slow people down she says. “If we can just give them a little extra effort they have to go through, we can stop them, talk to them,” says Haiston. Caltrans said the project had an estimated cost of 0,000 to 0,000. The spikes will be placed along both sides of the bridge across the 2.1 mile span. The project will take several nights, with lane closures beginning at 8 p.m.Meanwhile, Caltrans says it is still researching other long term solutions that could consist of fences, heightened barriers, glass panels or nets.
