But Johnson found a way to stay in his hometown.He went from coal to coding."Going on four years later, we're still hanging in here," says Johnson, who learned coding with several other former coal workers.Johnson's story isn't unique. It seems like everywhere you go in Pikeville, people are finding ways to survive, outside of the coal.About 21 percent of mining jobs have been eliminated statewide since 2016, forcing people to explore other industries.After nine years working in the mines, resident Harvey Maynard had to look for a new career after being laid off 10 months ago. His skills brought him to baking!"Right now, it's baking donuts!” says Maynard. “Which is a huge change.”Maynard doesn’t just bake—he even decorates, too."Even as a kid I loved to draw, paint, and color,” says Maynard. “I was always very artistic."New jobs are even moving to the small eastern Kentucky city to help. A new distillery opened one month ago; the owners wanted to build there, specifically to help hire coal miners who were out of work.It was a blessing for people like Michael Preston, who after 16 years of working in the coal industry, decided to go back to school. Preston got his associates in electrical technology, and now, he’s the maintenance manager at Dueling Barrels Distillery.     It's a place you look forward to coming every morning,” says Preston. 1950

Travelers might be wise to check for flight delays before heading to the airport this week, especially if you have a flight to the Gulf Coast, Georgia or the Carolinas as Hurricane Michael disrupts air traffic. As of Tuesday evening, several commercial airports in Florida have announced closures in advance of the hurricane's landfall. Panama City Airport announced all flights for American, Delta, Southwest and United Airlines are canceled until at least Thursday morning. TIJUANA, Mexico. (KGTV and AP) -- At least three people were killed in wind-driven fires that scorched a large swath of Baja, California last week, the Associated Press reports. Last Friday, Mexico’s civil defense told AP the fires forced more than 1,600 people to evacuate their homes. The fires burned near Tecate, Tijuana and between the coastal towns of Rosarito and Ensenada. The fire near Tecate burned more than 35,000 acres, according to AP. Schools were also shut down in Tijuana, Tecate and Rosarito due to heavy smoke in the area. Mexican officials told CNN the fire tore through 125 homes, 30 of which are in the city of Tijuana. Local support to help those affected by the fires is growing in San Diego, especially from the local Kumeyaay population. Anna Gloria Rodriguez showed a growing pile of donations in her office Wednesday. “Furniture, some blankets and pillows,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez is part of the Kumeyaay Nation and is heading up the effort to collect donations to bring to her family across the border. “The Kumeyaay Nation has people on both sides of the border. We have family in all the communities,” she continued. “The whole big mountains already burned but still one part on fire, so there was a lot of people in the community trying to put dirt and water.”While her family and many others are safe, the fires left some without electricity or easy access to clean water or food. Three restaurants associated with celebrity chef Mario Batali will be closing in Las Vegas.Batali has been accused of sexual misconduct.
