SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As protesters gather across the country to spread the message that black lives matter and there is a problem of police brutality against black people, not everyone is ready to join in the marches, but there are other ways to help the combat racism. “To make change, to build a movement, it takes all sorts of action. Everyone doesn’t need to go in the streets,” said Dayo Gore, UCSD Associate Professor in Ethnic Studies and Critical Gender Studies. While many have said they want change both verbally and through social media, she said people of color want that support to be taken to the next level. “This is not enough, your apology is not enough, feeling sorry is not enough, feeling my pain is not enough, I need some actual real change,” she said. To get that real change, people can use their voting powers to elect officials who will be an advocate, which is a point President Obama made in a publication addressing how people can make a difference in combating racism. He also noted that when making demands for officials, be specific with what you’re asking so it’s harder to ignore. Gore emphasized that point, citing specific examples of room for change in the San Diego community. She suggested a community review board that’s independent of the police department to review activity and oversee actions taken by police. She also said funding within the police department could be reevaluated. “Funding other things that will make communities more viable and able to survive, instead of simply policing communities,” said Gore. She also said in order to help get rid of racism, it’s important to first acknowledge there is an issue and educate yourself. “It starts with understanding what the problem is, and then figuring out where you best can raise your voice,” she said. She said another active step to take is speaking up among peers if someone says something racist, even if it’s uncomfortable. “When you’re hanging out with friends, do you say something when people say things racist or make assumptions based off the color of their skin?” she questioned. Gore also suggested people find groups in the community to both follow and support financially. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Developers in San Diego are offering a new concept for families looking for homes: Multi-Generational Housing.The homes include a separate suite within a single structure. The suite has a bedroom, living area, bathroom and a small kitchen.Developers say the idea designed with let elderly relatives, adult children who move back home or relatives with special needs in mind."You’re still with the family, but you have that privacy to step away and still be independent," says Bill Ostrem, the San Diego Division President for Lennar Homes. "At the same time, if you want to engage with the family, the family wants to engage with you it’s right there."Lennar says they started developing these kinds of homes in 2011 in Arizona. They saw a need as more extended families began living together.The suites help with that.Currently, Lennar is building their "NextGen" homes in the Sterling Heights community near 4-S Ranch. Ostrem says it's become their most popular model.About 1/3 of all the homes they've sold in Sterling Heights have the extra suite. They have other developments with NextGen homes in 13 states."I think it just makes sense," says Austin Dias, a Co-Partner with The Phair Company. They're about to start construction on La Mesa Summit Estates just north of the 94 freeway near Lemon Grove. The overwhelming response they got was from families looking for these kinds of homes."We see this a lot in other countries," Dias says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Sewage contaminated water is keeping swimmers out of the ocean in Imperial Beach. Late Tuesday afternoon, The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health extended an existing water contact closure to include all of Imperial Beach. The original closure was issued on June 27th for the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline. According to the county, sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary. Eric Syverson is a life long resident of Imperial Beach. He keeps a close eye on what's happening in the Tijuana River Valley. "It was dry on Saturday, not dry on Sunday. Monday, we wondered what was going on and now, Tuesday, there was quite a bit of flow this morning and it just smelled horrible and it’s green,” said Syverson. The water was pooling under the bridge on the north side of Dairy Mart Road. "At six a.m. this morning, probably double the volume that’s flowing right now and the air was twice as bad, you couldn’t breath under this bridge this morning," said Syverson. According to a San Diego inspector with the International Boundary and Water Commission, there was transboundary flow Monday night into Tuesday morning from a ruptured potable water line. The IBWC estimates 300,000 gallons of treated and untreated wastewater flowed into the U.S. Initially, the IBWC said the figure was much higher; roughly two million gallons. The number was revised after the inspector determined their gauging station was not accurately recording the flows. Members of Citizens Against Sewage are skeptical. "I’m looking at the gauge data from the river gauge from IBWC's information. We put values on those numbers that they provide, and it’s over seven milllion gallons,” said Lance Rodgers, Co-Founder of Citizens Against Sewage. This is just the latest in a series of sewage spills that have closed South County beaches."There were flows on the second, there were flows on the 30th, the 28th, 24, 23, 20, 19 it’s been a bad month,” said Syverson. Syverson said it's the same problem with no solutions from either side of the border. "I mean, why should we even have to think about it. It's July 9th, we should be at the beach right now, going "God, look at how gorgeous this area is," not standing in a horrible valley wondering how to solve a problem that’s existed for my entire lifetime," said Syverson. SAN FRANCISCO — Verizon is joining an escalating movement to siphon advertising away from Facebook in an effort to pressure the company into doing more to prevent racist and violent information from being shared on its social networking service.The decision announced Thursday by one of the world's biggest telecommunications companies is part of a boycott organized by civil rights and other advocacy groups under the rallying cry of "#StopHateforProfit."The NAACP and the ADL are among the organizations behind the movement.The protest was spurred by last month's killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.Facebook says it is in talks with the boycott organizers in an effort to become a "force for good."Verizon is by far the largest company to join the movement. But some are beginning to head outdoors, just with many precautions. Just a few days into the Governor's Stay-at-home order, many San Diegans are already getting cabin fever."With our gyms closed, we got to get exercise somehow," Joann Carcioppolo said. With no access to their weights and machines, Carcioppolo and her friend Janice Meyers decided to take a stroll around Pacific Beach. Of course, keeping in mind, Rule #1. "Doing our social distancing!" Meyers laughed. Families also took to the outdoors, hiking and hitting the parks. Instead of having their children clued to their devices, the Marcussen's spent the day at Calavera Hills Community Park in Carlsbad. "They brought their own toys down to make sure that we stay healthy and clean."Now that kids do not have school, and parents are working from home, things can get mundane. But many said they are trying to stay positive during this global pandemic. "Were are just trying to be kind grateful for this extra time together that we wouldn't normally have had.
