LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A wellness center in La Mesa is accused of misleading patients by illegally marketing a breast cancer screening device, according to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).This week, the FDA issued a formal warning to Total Thermal Imaging Inc. and its president and co-owner, Linda Hayes, for illegally marketing and distributing an unapproved thermography device as a sole screening device for breast cancer and other diseases, according to a press release.Thermography is heat-sensitive imaging depicted in variations of color.10News spoke to San Diego's Susan G. Komen breast cancer awareness organization, which says thermography alone is not enough. “It can be used in addition to a mammogram or other screening tool that has been shown effective but there hasn't been any scientific evidence for thermography right now being a standalone tool,” says Lizzie Wittig, Director of Mission Initiatives and Public Policy.The FDA is demanding a response within 15 working days.No one at the clinic answered the door. 10News called and sent messages, and got this text reply: "Total Thermal Imaging Inc. is reviewing the warning letter from the FDA and developing a response. We will work with the agency to ensure our products comply with acceptable regulations." This isn't the first time that a clinic has gotten a warning letter about thermography. LITHIA, Fla. — A Tampa Bay teenager is thankful for the device on her wrist after suffering a scary medical episode at The Crossing Church in Brandon, Florida. "I didn't know what was going on at all and it was just out of the blue," Deanna Recktenwald said. A warning appeared notifying the 18-year-old that her resting heart rate hit 190 beats per minute. "It was alarming that the watch was telling us to seek medical attention," said Stacey Recktenwald, Deanna's mother. "I didn't even know that it had the capability of giving us that alert."Stacey Recktenwald is a registered nurse and did not initially question the accuracy of the watch's reading. Staff at a walk-in clinic confirmed the teen's rapid heartbeat. "I was surprised, it was right on," said Stacey.The Recktenwald's said the watch saved Deanna's life. After arriving at the emergency room, doctors at Tampa General Hospital soon discovered Deanna suffers from chronic kidney disease. Both kidneys are only operating at 20 percent and she will likely require a future transplant. "Instantly started to pray and thank God for her having that watch," said Tom Recktenwald, Deanna's father. The high-tech Christmas gift came to the rescue, uncovering a serious health problem that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. "Now that we have some answers to why this is happening we can prevent something major from happening down the road," said Deanna. Named for the ancient British site Stonehenge, where the sun lines up among ancient stones on the solstice, the sun lines up with the gap in La Jolla’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier on certain days of the year. The natural phenomenon makes for spectacular photos. LAS VEGAS — Sheriff Joe Lombardo said during a press conference on Friday morning that it is still unknown why Stephen Paddock opened fire on concert-goers on the night of Oct. 1, 2017.58 people died and hundreds of people were injured during the worst mass shooting in modern history during a country music festival in Las Vegas. The sheriff also told the press that Paddock lost a lot of money in the past year and that could have been part of the motive for what he did. The sheriff also admitted that although the shooting did not meet the federal definition of terrorism, he personally considers it an act of terrorism. Lombardo also said that there is no evidence of other gunmen and they do not expect to arrest anyone else.In addition, the sheriff admitted that the missing hard drive has not been located and that it was common practice for Paddock to remove and hide hard drives.When asked if something like this could happen again, the sheriff admitted that it could.
