ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 1,144, with 600 still missing as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the provincial department of civil affairs said late Thursday.The toll rose from 1,117 on Wednesday.Overnight downpours triggered new floods and mudslides to the mudslide-devastated town of Zhouqu in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, leaving three people missing.Floods also have left eight people dead and eight others missing in two counties in Gannan's neighboring city of Longnan on Thursday.

BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhuanet) --Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co is expected to complete it takeover of Swedish luxury car brand Volvo from US automaker Ford Motor Co on Monday after getting government approval for the deal.Ministry of Commerce officials told China Daily on Thursday that the government cleared the Volvo deal on Monday 26, after the National Development and Reform Commission cleared the proposal last week.Geely has also got the necessary anti-trust approvals from the European Union and the US government for the deal.Li Shufu (center), chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Co, arrives for a news conference in Beijing earlier this year. In Chengxiang village, people were forced to row make-shift boats -- made of plastic bottles and planks -- to commute through the flooded streets.Chen Jian, the region's chief weather forecaster, said heavy rains are expected to fall on six Guangxi cities from June 7 to 10.Local disaster relief officials were ordered to evacuate residents in low-lying areas in advance. The provincial meteorological bureau forecast heavy storms to hit Hubei from June 7 to 8 and might trigger flooding in its southern mountainous areas.By June 3, floods have killed 125 people and left 34 people missing all over China, the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said.More than 23.09 million people and 1.55 million hectares of crops were affected. Direct economic losses amounted to 16.9 billion yuan (2.47 billion U.S. dollars), it said.
