SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The autopsy of the driver who drove up an off-ramp the wrong way onto the 805 and slammed into an SUV holding a mother and her 12-year-old daughter was released Friday.READ RELATED:?Autopsy details mental state of McSkillet before deadly crash on Interstate 805 in San DiegoThe report states the death of Trevor Heitmann, 18, also known on YouTube as McSkillet, was accidental and he had no drugs or alcohol in his system during the time of the crash."I'm not doing good and bad is an understatement," Dominic Pizarro, 22, says the past two months has been a challenge each day.He lost his mother, Aileen Pizarro, 43, and sister, Aryana."It's interesting the fact he had nothing in his system, and I think it's much sadder in that aspect," Pizarro said at first read, the report angered him. Then, as he understood the context, his frustration disintegrated, concerned more with the fact Heitmann never got help. "I feel for the family in that case. He, you know, nobody should have to go through that."That, referring to the loss of someone integrated into the fabric of your daily life, "I would always try to go and make a phone call to mom about how my day went, which is what I would do when I was away at training for the Air Force. I would call my family and let them know how my day is going, and that took a while to learn I can't do that anymore," he said. Throughout the interview, he was strong and stable, never shying away from a question or getting emotional.He said each day he fights a battle, whether it's just getting up in the morning, or something reminding him in the middle of his day that they're never coming back.He is back at school, studying for his Master's Degree, and taking what happened to him as a way to give back, "we're trying to do a scholarship in my sister's honor for musicians."The Aryana Pizarro Music Scholarship will help talented kids, like his sister, get the funding they need to perfect their art.Dominic said because of his deep faith, friends, and family, he's been able to push forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The memories came flooding back for Vietnam veteran Ray Hildreth as he returned to Camp Pendleton 50 years later. He wanted to tour his old unit, the 1st Recon Battalion."Looking at the mountains, I remember having to run up and down them!"And while the current 1st Recon Battalion Marines may not recognize Hildreth, they know his story. In June of 1966, Hildreth's unit was stationed on Hill 488 in the jungles of Vietnam. Before the week was over, they would fight the battle that would make them the most highly decorated small unit in the entire history of the U.S. military, winning a Congressional Medal of Honor, four Navy Crosses, thirteen Silver Stars, and eighteen Purple Hearts—some of them posthumously.There were just 18 of them when they encountered the enemy, a battalion of over 200. "Early on in the battle, and all the Marines here can identify with this, the NVA yelled out 'Marines you die in an hour,' and we had some colorful words to say back to them, and said, come and get us," remembers Hildreth.The late Staff Sergeant Jimmie Howard served as platoon leader with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion and led the defense of Hill 488 when attacked by the North Vietnamese.Howard had combat experience from Korea, and Hildreth credits the leader with keeping them alive. "Sergeant Howard said, 'Laugh at them!' And we did, we laughed out loud at them. Later I went back to Vietnam, 2011. I met one of the NVA we fought against. I asked him, what did you think when we laughed at you? He said we thought you were a much bigger unit. And it was that laugh, I'm sure of, that made them not just try to walk over the top of the hilltop and take us," said Hildreth. When they were out of grenades, the men began throwing rocks. "If we hadn't laughed at them, by sheer numbers, they could've walked across the top of the hill and killed us. At the end of the day, there were maybe eight rounds of ammunition left between us."The unit killed an estimated 200 people.Of the 18, all were wounded, and six died. Hildreth wrote a book about the battle, titled Hill 488."I thought people needed to know about the battle, not everyone went over there took drugs and smoked pot," said Hildreth. "We went over there with a different outlook, we're supposed to be here, there's a reason for it, and we done our job. We didn't protest."During the visit, Hildreth was accompanied by some of Staff Sergeant Howard's family members. 2456

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The man responsible for a fatal drunk driving crash nearly two years ago was sentenced to more than three decades in prison Friday. San Diego Superior Court Judge Joan Weber handed Jeffrey Levi a sentence of 30 years to life in prison, plus an additional four years for the crash that killed 19-year-old Isaac Felix and 33-year-old Jesus Dominguez. “I do want to remind you Mr. Levi, because I know that you’re going to be living with that for the rest of your life, that you killed these two young people and burned them to death, you permanently maimed another young woman, and injured an officer,” said Weber. “By my count, you made four fatal decisions on that night."In January 2018, Levi got behind the wheel of his Mustang while drunk and drove more than 100 miles per hour on Interstate 15. The Corolla was disabled in the freeway lanes, then hit by an SUV driven by an off-duty San Diego Police sergeant. The sedan burst into flames, killing Felix and Jesus Dominguez. Giovanna was severely injured but rescued by Good Samaritans. Sgt. Raymond Rowe was also injured. Levi fled the scene, completely uninjured. He was later found and arrested. “I made very serious mistakes with detrimental consequences; I relapsed,” said Levi after explaining his attempt at rehab for his alcoholism. “I think of Jesus, Isaac, Giovanna and their friends and families every day. I wish that I could do or say something to change what happened, but I can’t and I have to live with that forever.” In August, a jury found Levi guilty of second-degree murder, hit and run, drunk driving, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He also has a prior DUI conviction from 2007. The victims’ families have also filed a civil lawsuit against Levi, the City of San Diego and Sgt. Rowe. That case is pending. 1977

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students spent Friday gathering their belongings and saying goodbye to their peers at the Art Institute of San Diego.The school's operator, the for-profit Argosy University, shut down the campus after court documents alleged it misused millions of dollars in federal funds. The move left many students angry and wondering what's next. "I feel so empty," said Marjan Razavi, about six months from graduating and ,000 in debt. "I lose my job and my education at the same time."The Institute's closure is the latest for-profit run school to abruptly shut down in San Diego. In 2018, Brightwood College closed its doors. In 2016, the giant I.T.T. Technical Institute shuttered. Derek Abbey runs the Veterans Center at San Diego State University, a population he says the for-profits target because of their education benefits. Abbey said the schools often make grand job promises, but charge higher tuition than public universities (a federal study showed double), but spend a lot of that money on advertising. "They're getting out in front of the populations that they expect are going to come to their school, and often times those are under represented populations that don't know the higher education systems," Abbey said. Abbey teaches the alternative options like attending community college and transferring to a public university - many now offering the convenience of online classes. About twenty colleges participated in a transfer fair at the art institute building Friday. Students also can request loan forgiveness, however that would involve canceling some, or all, of the credits they've earned so far.
