SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Wearing masks and social distancing, churchgoers in Mira Mesa gathered outside of the Good Shepherd Parish Wednesday for a special Veterans Day mass.Under San Diego County's latest move into the purple tier, outdoor mass will be the new normal for the church until we move back into a less restrictive tier.“We want to protect the people,” said Father Michael Pham, a pastor at the Catholic church. “Health is important.”He said since reopening, the church has offered services inside at a limited capacity, outside and online. By Saturday, indoor operations will cease due to the county falling back into the purple tier.“We want to comply with the state and health department,” said Pham. “It’s a challenge, but people seem to adapt very well.”While Pham plans to comply, some others are pushing back.Skyline Church posted a lengthy statement to its website, reacting to news of the purple tier. Part of the message said, “Regardless of what tier the governor assigns to San Diego County, our Board, Trustees, and staff all agree that it is necessary to remain open for the overall health and well-being of our communities.”We saw this happen during the last round of closures. Some churches kept their doors open, saying shutting them any longer would lead to severe problems for people, including mental health issues.The county’s public health officer sent cease and desist letters to a few, but some continued to fight back, arguing that religious services are essential.“Fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost, it’s essential,” said the pastors of Awaken Church in a video posted to the church’s website months ago during another closure.Pham said his main goal is to protect his congregants and only reopen once allowed.“We try to do the best we can,” he said. “People are really conscientious about what they need to do, that’s important, that’s the reality that we live in right now.” 1991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Marine's dreams are close to becoming a reality in the form of a massive property in Dulzura. It is not just for Kalani Creutzberg. His efforts to help others prompted an Animal Planet star to join the cause. Nate Schoemer was also a Marine. He was fresh out of high school with his blood type on his boots when he joined the invasion of Iraq.  "The first group was out there for three days and when they came back you could tell that they've just been through hell," Schoemer said. "This is hard for me to talk about," he said with tears in his eyes. It is especially hard to him to discuss it with civilians who often cannot comprehend the horrors of war. He lost some friends on that deployment in 2003."I could hear it from where I was," he started. "I mean I could hear them screaming," It haunted his heart on home soil., but he said his dog's love lifted his spirits. "I need to continue on this mission and helping others the way she helped me," he added.When he got out of the service he became a master dog trainer. He went on to host an Animal Planet show called "Rescue Dog to Super Dog". In it, he saved shelter dogs and turned them into service dogs for people in need. In episode one, he trained Bas for Creutzberg, which is how the two met. Creutzberg survived chilling deployments, but the fight for his life followed him home. "Before I knew it I was homeless," Creutzberg explained. "It was embarrassing, it was shameful," Bas gave him a sense of purpose. "When I was going there to rescue him he was actually the one rescuing me," Creutzberg added. Now, he is on a mission to give homeless vets a home. He plans to buy a property that is nearly 300 acres in Dulzura. "We're going to run our day to day operations very much like when we were back in the service," he explained. "There will be structure, we will work together…… the very things that a lot of us miss."It does not end there.  They will also rescue homeless dogs  about to be euthanized."[We'll] allow both the veterans and the dogs to grow relationships and start anew," he said. Schoemer believed in the Cammies and Canines Sanctuary so much, he joined the efforts. He plans to turn some of the dogs on death row into service dogs for vets. "Just being around Marines and veterans is a great thing,"  Schoemer said with a big grin. Their goal is to get back to tackling battles together. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans fled Hurricane Lane's path taking flights Thursday evening from the Hawaiian islands to California.The first time a hurricane will make landfall on the islands since 1992, inspiring fear in vacationers and those who are hunkering down.RELATED: San Diego rescue teams head to Hawaii for Hurricane Lane"Some of the rain would be so loud you couldn’t even talk, you’d be yelling at one another," Steven Bohn said. He moved from San Diego to the big island two years ago for his fiance, who is attending pharmacy school.He said the bands of weather leading up to the brunt of the storm started hitting faster, leaving shorter windows of respite."It looks like it might be coming back pretty soon I don’t think I want to stand out here too long," Bohn said. "The floodwaters have completely destroyed the Bayfront. The downtown road area, there’s no access there whatsoever the cops have blocked that off."He's an occupational therapist and told 10News he was making calls earlier in the day, checking on his clients and ensuring they didn't need medications or help evacuating.He said emergency crews patrolled the area about every 45 minutes, keeping everyone safe. Other signs of disaster preparation were visible in stores, full of bare shelves.Bohn said they're prepared."We’ll be staying indoors," he said. "Closing all the windows and pulling all the shades down in case of the glass."Bohn believes Hawaiians will endure, and said "I’m just hoping that Oahu, Maui, Kawai even the small island of Lanai, they all are going to be okay, and hunker down and get ready for a rough one."In San Diego, passengers sighed a breath of relief as they waited at baggage claim."We have kindergarten starting for my little daughter here on Monday, she’s very excited, and it’s important we made it back," Essam Khouri said.His in-laws are still on Maui. He said their flight was canceled and they're sheltering in place until they can fly back on Saturday.Carolyn Krebs said they made the decision Tuesday, after seeing the latest hurricane path projection, to cut their vacation short."We called Alaska airlines and changed our flight and paid a lot of extra money but at the end of the day it was a good call we’re home safe," Krebs said.Everyone was thankful to be home safe. 2380
