SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Awaken Church continues to hold indoors services, despite orders from San Diego County to close all indoor religious services due to COVID-19 restrictions.According to the San Diego County website, three of the Awaken Church locations have received cease and desist orders. The location at 7620 Balboa Ave. received a cease and desist order July 17, 2020; the Carlsbad location received one Nov. 16, 2020; and the Chula Vista location received one Nov. 19, 2020.RELATED: Churches pushing back against purple tier restrictionsIn addition, San Diego County put out a notice that anyone who went to the location at 7620 Balboa Ave. between Nov. 15 and Nov. 22 needs to quarantine for two weeks because of a community outbreak. The county said a community outbreak had occurred there, which is when there are three or more reported cases from different homes in the span of two weeks.An attendee at the San Marcus location said he feels comfortable attending in person and indoors.“I think it’s really about having individual choice and trusting people to have the intelligence to do the right thing, and this church has a wonderful uplifting message that I think is so positive and hopeful for people in a time where we find ourselves somewhat down,” said Brian.Brian said that the San Marcos facility is spacious so people are able to spread out, adding that the right to worship freely is in the constitution.RELATED: County asks Kearny Mesa church attendees to quarantine after COVID-19 outbreak“Try to preserve as much of our freedoms and liberties as we can. Also, the website asks attendees to refrain from posting pictures and videos of the services on social media.A video of church leaders posted on the website describes their decision to remain open for in person and indoor services.“We’ve made this decision not out of defiance but out of obedience to God,” two people said in a video on the website, adding that they plan to continue in person services.A county spokesperson said if a cease and desist order is ignored, the next step would be a closure order. After that, law enforcement is asked to get involved by giving citations with a thousand dollar fine for each violation; then the case goes to either the San Diego District Attorney or City Attorney. 2635

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans maintenance crews closed the westbound Interstate 8 connector to northbound state Route 67 at 9 p.m. Thursday night, but lanes were reopened at 5 a.m. Friday morning. The closure took effect for guardrail repair, according to Caltrans.Signs were posted to direct motorists on westbound I-8 to exit at West Main Street and turn left to eastbound I-8 to SR-67.Motorists were reminded to be work zone alert and slow down when approaching Caltrans vehicles with amber flashing lights.Caltrans says Californians can expect more roadway improvement projects like this made possible by the recently passed Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, Senate Bill 1.  715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Brendan Watters had big plans for Ballast Point the moment his company took control March 2. That includes creating new beers, and driving a wrapped bus around San Diego for two months announcing that the iconic craft brewery was back under local control. All of that hit a snag two days after sale closed, when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a State of Emergency because of the coronavirus outbreak. "So basically a week after we were closing up operations," said Watters, the brewery's CEO, who moved to San Diego after the sale. "We had to pivot straight away."Watters' company, Kings and Convicts, bought Ballast Point from Constellation Brands, a Fortune-500 beverage company that paid billion for the San Diego brewer in 2015. Watters declined to disclose the sale price, but did confirm it was less than billion. He said Ballast Point, which launched in San Diego in 1996, lost some of its local charm under an international brand. He says he plans to bring that back, with two new beers launching this summer and an emphasis on design, such as the famous oceanic art that accompanies each one. Still, he faced an unprecedented challenge two days after closing. The tap rooms all shut down, eviscerating 50 percent of its revenue (Watters estimates total revenue fell as much as 60 percent). Watters says the brewery focused on its distribution, and was aided by a federal stimulus loan. Now, the Miramar and Little Italy tasting rooms are reopening with social distancing alterations, such as spaced out tables, and smartphone ordering systems. Watters says he was able to recall most of the brewery's 550 employees. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium has opened a new exhibit showcasing one of the sea's most beautiful creatures in one of the world's largest habitats for the animal.The aquarium's new permanent exhibition "Seadragons and Seahorses" featuring Weedy and Leafy seadragons and several species of seahorses and pipefish.At the center of the exhibit will sit one of the world's largest seadragon habitats in the world, measuring 18 feet wide, 9 feet tall and containing 5,375 gallons of water, according to the aquarium.The exhibit takes guests into the lives of seadragons and seahorses, showcasing the sea life in a habitat designed to create the ideal environment for them to breed. Guests will learn how to observe the animals like scientists, catch distinguishing features, and identify courting and mating behaviors.The exhibit also gives visitors a peek into the Birch Aquariums Husbandry Team working to ensure the species thrives. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community activists spoke Friday at Lincoln High School, demanding a long-time teacher be removed amid allegations of racist and sexual comments made to students.The school board launched an investigation and put a monitor in the classroom at the Lincoln Park school.Activist Tasha Williamson went live on her Facebook page Monday at the school.“You better talk to our children like you would talk to your own children.
