HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) — The city of Hiroshima in western Japan is marking the 75th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing.The Aug. 6, 1945, bombing was the world’s first nuclear attack. Three days later, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki.Japan surrendered on Aug. 15, ending World War II and the Japanese aggression in Asia that lasted nearly half a century.Hiroshima was a major Japanese military hub with factories, military bases and ammunition facilities before the bombing.An estimated 140,000 people, including those with radiation-related injuries and illnesses, died from Aug. 6 through Dec. 31, 1945. That was 40% of Hiroshima’s population at the time. Hiroshima today has 1.2 million residents.Thursday, survivors of the Hiroshima bombing gathered in diminished numbers to mark the anniversary. They urged the world, and their own government, to do more to ban nuclear weapons.The coronavirus meant a small turnout, but the survivors’ message was more urgent than ever.Survivors want younger generations to learn their lessons while they are still around.As a girl, Koko Kondo had a secret mission: Revenge against those who dropped the Aug. 6, 1945, atomic bomb. GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) — Police say an 18-year-old man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of actor Eddie Hassell during a random robbery at a suburban Dallas apartment complex parking lot over the weekend. Grand Prairie police say D'jon Antone was arrested on a capital murder charge Wednesday at his home in Dallas. Hassell was known for his roles in the NBC show "Surface" and the 2010 film "The Kids Are All Right." Police have said 30-year-old Hassell, who lived in Waco, was fatally shot around 1:50 a.m. on Sunday in Grand Prairie.Police said when they arrived at the scene, they located Hassell, who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. First aid was rendered as the Waco resident was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 773

GREENFIELD, Ind. -- An early morning traffic stop on I-70 on Monday ended with a huge drug bust for Indiana State Police. A trooper pulled over a 2017 Ford Expedition for a traffic violation near Greenfield, Indiana around 11 a.m. after he witnessed the driver weaving in and out of the traffic lanes. During the stop, the trooper found more than 78 pounds of marijuana stowed in the back of the SUV. The street value of the pot is estimated to be around 0,000. The driver, Christian Elie, 51, of Colorado and his passenger, Austin Johnson, 42, of Indianapolis, are both facing multiple drug charges. The arrests and charges remain under investigation by Indiana State Police. 717

HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) — A Pennsylvania college student who disappeared following a rugby tournament in Bermuda was found dead Monday after an intensive search of the British island territory.Searchers found the body of Mark Dombroski, 19, at the base of a colonial-era fort in a park not far from where he was last seen walking by himself on CCTV footage, officials with the Bermuda Police Service said at a news conference.A cause of death was not released but forensic experts were still processing the scene where his body was found and an autopsy was planned, said Acting Commissioner James Howard."Bermuda Police Service extends our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends," Howard said after a day of searching that included local authorities, volunteers and Dombroski's family.Dombroski was a member of the rugby team at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia and had come to Bermuda to compete in a tournament. He disappeared early Sunday, with video footage showing him walking alone and looking at his phone as he left a bar where his friends had gathered.He was found at the base of Fort Prospect in a wooded area known as the arboretum and near an athletic center where the team had played during the tournament.Dombroski's family rushed to the island to join the search and retrace his steps."We dearly love our son, we cherish our son. ...
