KUBUQI (Inner Mongolia), July 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Amos Nadai, ambassador of Israel to China, spoke highly of the desertification control efforts in the Kubuqi desert of China during an exclusive interview with Xinhuanet here Saturday. "It's a huge area, which is more than half of my country," Nadai said, "I see a lot of planting and it's very beautiful." Nadai was here for the 2011 Kubuqi International Desert Forum held in the Kubuqi Desert, Inner Mongolia of China. As a small country with half of its land being desert, Israel has to work very hard in desertification control and has accumulated a great deal of experience. However, Nadai praised China's efforts in learning new technologies applied in the Kubuqi desert. He said that China takes this very seriously and has developed really rapidly. "They are doing the right thing; they bring here every two years the best experts from all over the world, and they listened carefully," he said. Nadai said that he saw the way people here fight against desertification, develop tourism, boost the use of clean energy, and he was very impressed. That's why Israel is happy to cooperate with China in this field, Nadai said. He also introduced a long-term project that Israel has been working together with China in Xinjiang, which Israel introduces methods to the local farmers that can grow the same amount of crop by using 50 percent less of water. "The local people have learned everything that we can offer them and they can do it alone now," Nadai said. The ambassador, who was awarded the Honorary Citizenship of Chengdu City, the capital of Sichuan Province, Wednesday, said: "I am very very excited for that honor."

NEW YORK, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- U.S. crude oil price edged down on Friday, ending the week with a 3.65-percent loss, the fourth straight drop in the week. With absence of major macro-economic news, crude prices on Friday mainly followed the dollar's steps. As the dollar dipped to its historic low against the Japanese yen while dropping also against the euro, oil rallied for most of the trading session. But in the last trading hour, crude turned negative because the dollar bounced back from low and the U.S. stocks turned to red. The dollar index, tracking the greenback's performance against a basket of currencies, fell 0.4 percent.Crude prices fell sharply on Thursday as fears of a double-dip recession triggered sell-off of riskier assets. WTI dropped nearly 6 percent. On Friday, the markets seemed to start calming down. But for the week, it still posted a fall of 3.65 percent.Light, sweet crude for September delivery fell moderately 12 cents, or 0.15 percent to settle at 82.26 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after trading from 79.17 to 83.55 dollars. But in London, Brent crude for October delivery gained 1.63 dollars, or 1.52 percent to close at 108.62 dollars a barrel. BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday announced a recall on a drug infusion pump of Medtronic, the Associated Press reported. The recalled drug pump was called "SynchroMed II", including models of 8637-20 and 8637-40, distributed between 2004 and July 2011.Drug infusion pump was used to deliver the drugs for patients to treat chronic pain, spasms as well as other conditions. The pumps' malfunction could put patients in the risk of either recurrent or withdrawal symptoms, which could be life-threatening, FDA warned. There were 55 reported cases and one death related to the drug withdrawal, among a total 139,653 SynchroMed II pump implants worldwide, FDA notified. The problem was due to a film within the pump's battery that could stop the therapy, FDA said.Medtronic, the U.S. medical technology company based in Minneapolis, is not recommending patients to remove the pumps, but instead, encourage patients to contact their doctor if they hear the device alarm.

STOCKHOLM, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Meat diet, a dietary habit popular in some developed countries, can produce more greenhouse gas and thus is likely to actually cause more impact on climate, said a Swedish study published Tuesday.According to Swedish Radio's Ekot news program, the meat diet, also known as Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) diet, doubled the greenhouse gas emission compared with the balanced diet recommended by the Swedish Food Administration. Many Swedish people have abandoned the diet habit of eating root vegetables and fruits, and switched to LCHF diets. The LCHF diet has more meat, fat and unusual greenhouse gas emission. But these root vegetables, such as potatoes and carrots, and other naturally grown vegetables can be planted with less greenhouse gas emission. The report also revealed that many of the LCHF diet advices are actually given by the researchers sponsored by meat industry.

COPENHAGEN, May 30 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed E. coli cases has risen to 14 in Denmark, with at least 26 others suspected of having the intestinal infection, the National Serum Institute said Monday.Seven of the confirmed cases show symptoms of kidney failure which marks an advanced stage of the sickness, the institute said."Almost all of the 14 infected people have been in northern Germany recently except just one. There is a 24-year-old man from Jutland. He has not even been to Germany, so he does not quite fit with the rest of the pattern," said Kaare Moelbak, chief physician at the institute. "We do not know yet how he has been so unlucky to get this infection but we assume that it has been a person-to-person transmission, or that he has eaten infected vegetables," he added.Denmark's Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) had advised Danish consumers not to eat raw tomato, lettuce and cucumber from Germany, and cucumber from Spain. It is now checking Danish cucumbers for traces of E. coli, with results expected on Tuesday.
