Hank Azaria says his "eyes have been opened" and he's willing to "step aside" from playing his controversial "Simpsons" character. The actor appeared on Tuesday's episode of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and talked about the fallout surrounding the character he voices, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.Comedian Hari Kondabolu's documentary "The Problem with Apu" debuted last November and looked at the character as a negative, stereotypical representation of South Asians.Nahasapeemapetilon, a Indian-American character with a thick accent, operates the Kwik-E-Mart convenience store in the fictional town of Springfield. The show recently aired a response to complaints about him.Writers had the character of Lisa Simpson respond to a question from her mother Marge by saying, "Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?" before Lisa glanced at a framed photograph of Apu on her nightstand, which was inscribed with the message "Don't have a cow."The scene generated further complaints from viewers.Azaria voices multiple characters on the show, including Moe Szyslak and Chief Wiggum. He told Colbert he just wanted to be funny."The idea that anybody, young or old, past or present was bullied or teased based on the character of Apu, it just really makes me sad," Azaria said. "It was certainly not my intention. I wanted to spread laughter and joy with this character and the idea that it's brought pain and suffering in any way, that it was used to marginalize people, it's upsetting."The actor told Colbert he had nothing to do with the show's response, given that Apu doesn't speak during the episode. Azaria said he did not agree with the show's response to the controversy.Azaria said he's given a great deal of thought to how to proceed and believes "the most important thing is to listen to South Asian people, Indian people in this country when they talk about what they feel and how they think about this character."He also called for more inclusion in "The Simpson's" writing room -- even if that means he no longer voices Apu."I really want to see Indian, South Asian writer, writers in the room, not in a token way but genuinely informing whatever new direction this character may take, including how it is voiced or not voiced," Azaria said. "I'm perfectly willing and happy to step aside or help transition it into something new. I really hope that's what 'The Simpsons' does and it not only makes sense, but it just feels like the right thing to do to me."CNN has reached out to "The Simpsons" for comment. 2604

GENEVA — The World Health Organization said European nations reported more than 700,000 new coronavirus cases last week — the highest-ever figure since the start of the pandemic. In a weekly briefing published Tuesday, WHO said weekly virus cases and deaths across Europe jumped by 34% and 16% respectively. Britain, France, Russia and Spain accounted for more than half of the new cases seen in the region. The organization noted that the number of new cases reported in Spain showed a “noticeable decline” in comparison to recent weeks. But in Poland, WHO said virus cases and deaths spiked by 93% and 104% respectively, and the government has tightened restrictions to try avoiding another lockdown.WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said this week that the agency understood the frustration people were feeling as the pandemic drags on but warned “there are no shortcuts and no silver bullets.”WHO described lockdowns a “last resort” when countries have no other options and urged officials to use more targeted methods to stop the virus. 1061

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ACT:- ,200 stimulus checks for the same group of Americans who received a check in the spring - 6 billion in funds for schools to hire staff and conduct social distancing- Replenishing the Paycheck Protection Program, intended to help businesses keep employees on payroll- Extending unemployment supplement, although at a lower amount- Liability protection for businesses reopening amid the pandemicSenate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that Senate Republicans will submit a series of bills tonight known as the Health, Economic Assistance, Liability Protection and Schools (HEALS) Act.McConnell, who called out Democrats for “stonewalling,” had not taken up a stimulus bill passed by House Democrats in May. He urged Democrats to join in negotiations.“We have one foot in the pandemic and one foot in the recovery,” McConnell said Monday calling the timing of the legislation a “crossroads” for the country. The HEALS Act will include a second round of stimulus funds for the same group of Americans who received the last stimulus check. The previous economic stimulus check was ,200 for most American adults making less than ,000 per year. McConnell said there will be additional assistance for those caring for adult vulnerable dependents. The HEALS Act will also include replenishing Paycheck Protection Program funds, which were given to businesses to help keep employees on payroll during the height of the pandemic. The act will also include a supplement for unemployment, which ran out last week. Since the spring, the federal government provided a 0 per week supplement to unemployment checks. But there is still a disagreement on how much this supplement should be, as President Donald Trump and some Congressional Republicans complained that the supplement gave an incentive to lower income employees to not return to work.Schumer said that the Republican proposals do not go far enough, and criticized McConnell for not submitting a single bill, but instead a series of proposals.“The Republican proposal will ignore not one or two or three but scores of major crises in America right now,” Schumer said. “In addition, based on what the leader has said, the Republican proposal won't go nearly far enough, even if the pieces they try to do something with, the small number, the disparate number, the unaggregated number, since each piece seems to be separate because they can't seem to get agreement among themselves.”The issue, Schumer says, is that the White House has its own set of proposals its ready to outline. But it appears on an issue concerning most Americans, a second stimulus check, there is agreement among Congressional Democrats, Republicans and the White House.“There's a ,200 check coming. That is going to be part of the new package,” White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said on CNN’s “State of the Union. But neither Schumer nor McConnell addressed a rapidly growing deficit, as revenue into the IRS has declined while expenditures go up. In the month of June along, the federal deficit was 3 billion. Overall, the federal deficit for the first nine months of fiscal year 2020 was .7 trillion. Before this year, there has never been a budget deficit of more than .4 trillion in the US. 3275

GREELEY, Colo. – Chris Watts was told Tuesday at an advisement hearing in a Weld County courtroom that he faces nine felony counts, including first-degree murder and unlawful termination of a pregnancy, in connection with the deaths of his wife and two daughters in Frederick last week.Watts, 33, faces three counts of first-degree murder after deliberation, two counts of first-degree murder – victim under 12/position of trust, one count of first-degree unlawful termination of a pregnancy and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body. The unlawful termination of a pregnancy charge comes because Shanann Watts was 15 weeks pregnant at the time she was killed. Former Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett explained the statute in an interview with Denver7 Friday. In court Tuesday, Watts answered questions from the judge of whether he understood the charges against him with short responses of, “Yes sir.”Watts and his attorney waived his right to a preliminary hearing within 35 days and asked for a status conference to be held instead. His attorney and prosecutors agreed that an evidentiary and discovery hearing could be held in the case as well.Prosecutors will have 63 days after Watts' arraignment to decide if they will seek the death penalty in the case. If they do not, Watts would face mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole if he is convicted on any of the murder charges.Shanann’s father and brother, Frank Rzucek and Frank Rzucek Jr., both attended the hearing. The elder Rzucek was visibly emotional during the hearing; his son comforted him as he buried his head in his hands and wept as the charges against Chris were read. The affidavit for Watts' arrest was ordered unsealed Monday and was released Monday afternoon. It says that he was having an affair that he had previously denied to police, and that he claimed that Shanann had strangled their daughters, Bella and Celeste, after he told her he wanted to separate.Watts was arrested late last Wednesday and has been held without bond ever since. His pregnant wife and daughters, 34-year-old Shanann, 3-year-old Celeste and 4-year-old Bella, were reported missing last Monday by a family friend after Shanann missed a doctor’s appointment.A day after the three were reported missing, Chris Watts gave an interview to Denver7 in which he pleaded for the girls to come home and said he and his wife “had an emotional conversation” before he allegedly last saw her.Shanann’s body was discovered in a field on Anadarko Petroleum Company property. Court documents show her body was found in a "shallow grave near an oil tank." Her daughter’s bodies were discovered concealed within oil tanks nearby, sources told Denver7. Court documents filed late last week show experts were advised the bodies were in tanks filled with crude oil "for several days." Chris Watts had been an Anadarko employee but was fired by the company Wednesday. At a news conference Monday, Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke declined to elaborate on the case beyond the documents that were released. At the same news conference, Rzucek delivered a brief statement: "We would like to thank everyone in the Frederick Police Department and all the agencies involved for working so hard to find my daughter, granddaughters and [unborn child] Nico," Rzucek said. "Thank you everyone for coming out to the candlelight vigil and sending all your prayers. They are greatly appreciated. And keep the prayers coming for our family. Thank you very much.”Watts will continue to be held without bond after Tuesday’s court hearing. His status conference was set Tuesday for Nov. 19 at 10:30 a.m. 3686

Harvey Weinstein is facing new allegations of sex trafficking and rape.A German actress, using the pseudonym Emma Loman, filed a federal lawsuit in Los Angeles on Monday, alleging that Weinstein raped her during the Cannes Film Festival in 2006. She is suing Weinstein for violation of human trafficking laws, assault, battery and false imprisonment, according to court documents obtained by CNN."Our client brings her claims in an effort to achieve justice for herself, and she hopes that by doing so she can help open the door to justice for the women in her industry who have undergone similar experiences," John G. Balestriere, the attorney handling Loman's claim, said in a statement to CNN. "Mr. Weinstein must answer these allegations and be held accountable for any damage he has caused our client."Phyllis Kupferstein, an attorney representing Weinstein, told CNN in a statement, "This lawsuit is an attempt to continue the legal barrage and public attention on Mr. Weinstein. The allegations are untrue and the claims are barred by the statute of limitations. We intend to immediately move to dismiss the complaint."According to the suit, Loman said she met with Weinstein at his hotel suite in Cannes, France to discuss starring in an upcoming film project he was producing, but he soon started making sexual advances towards her."Upon arriving at Weinstein's suite, however, Weinstein quickly dropped his professional demeanor," the suit states. "He instead overpowered Loman and raped her. Shocked and betrayed, Loman did not know what to do. Furthering Loman's disorientation, Weinstein proceeded to treat the rape like a standard component of their business, as if the professional discussion he offered Loman had actually taken place."Related: Harvey Weinstein seeks dismissal of indictment due to emails between him and accuserLoman also claims that Weinstein threatened her not to speak of the assault. This is the second sex trafficking case filed against Weinstein.Last week, a federal judge in New York ruled that British actress Kadian Noble can move forward with her sex trafficking lawsuit against the disgraced media mogul.Noble accuses Weinstein of sexually assaulting her in a hotel bathroom in Cannes, France in 2014 after luring her with talk of a potential movie role.Noble filed suit in November against Harvey Weinstein and his brother and then-business partner Bob Weinstein.US District Court Judge Robert W. Sweet granted Bob Weinstein's motion for dismissal but denied one from Harvey Weinstein. The judge wrote it would be the first instance in which a plaintiff asked for the Trafficking Victims Protections Act to be applied to conduct like that alleged in the lawsuit.Weinstein's lawyer said the act should not be applied."A typical sex trafficking case is someone who lures underage girls on the promise of a green card and locking them up in a basement and forcing them to have sex for money," Kupferstein said in a statement at the time.Weinstein, who also is facing criminal charges in New York, has denied all allegations of "non-consensual sexual activity."Weinstein has pleaded not guilty to six felony sex crimes -- two counts of predatory sexual assault, two counts of rape, one first-degree criminal sex act charge and one criminal sex act.Related: Sex trafficking lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein can proceed, judge rulesThe charges stem from allegations from three women, according to court documents. Weinstein remains free after posting million cash bail. The charges against Weinstein came nine months after The New Yorker and The New York Times published accounts from several women accusing him of various forms of sexual misconduct. In a recent interview with CNN, Ben Brafman, Weinstein's New York criminal attorney, said it would be "difficult but not impossible" to seat an impartial jury should Weinstein's case move forward to trial."I hope to find 12 people in Manhattan who may have heard a lot of the allegations against Mr. Weinstein but will give the court their sworn assurances that they will decide this case based on the evidence that comes into the courtroom and not on what they made have read, or what they may have heard," Brafman said. "I think part of what we're trying to suggest in these motions to dismiss is that contrary to what people may have read and may have heard, there is another side here."CNN's Cheri Mossburg and Judy Oehling contribute to this report.The-CNN-Wire 4463
