SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man killed in 2013 is pleading with the community for new leads as the case has now been left unsolved for more than half a decade.Ralph Green was killed on October 20, 2013.  He was murdered on Jewell Street in the Mountain View neighborhood, on the porch of his daughter’s home while at her 32nd birthday party.His daughter, Chanel Green, says the shooting happened suddenly, catching everyone by surprise.“My mother was on her way outside, so it was a blessing I didn't lose both my parents that day,” Chanel said. “I remember (my mother) shrieking, ‘oh my god, Ralph’s been shot.’ And I ran to the door to see my dad walk holding his neck.”Green says he was shot three times, once through this throat.“My brother catches him, and I moved my brother out of the way, and I laid (my father) down on the ground, and I start screaming, “oh my god, my dad’s been shot, call the police,’” she said. “My dad bled out on the floor, and all I could hope was that he heard me when I told him I loved him.” Channel’s aunt, Jennetta Pierce, was also shot.  Pierce is Ralph’s cousin-in-law.Pierce says she was inside the house, by the window, when the bullets started flying. One of them hit her on the lower back.“I got hit, but I didn’t let anyone know I got hit because my kids were there, and I just told them to get up under the table,” Pierce recalled.  After that, emergency crews came inside the house and took her to the hospital, where she spent two weeks.  She says she spent the next five years focused on moving forward.Police have said the shooting was random.  Chanel says there have been tips, and potentially leads given to the police but none have panned out.  But she’s convinced that there are people out there that know something, that can give her and her family the closure they need.“For anybody who knows somebody that knows something to come forward, now is the time, to tell the truth,” Chanel said. Anyone with information can contact San Diego Police or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 2087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego announced Tuesday that the transformed Super 8 motel in Egger Highlands will be used to temporarily serve families and children experiencing homelessness amid COVID-19. The city's purchase and transformation of the motel was approved by the City Council in 2017. The transitional housing units will eventually be used to serve those enrolled in the San Diego Misdemeanants At-Risk Track. The program was created by the City Attorney's Office for chronic misdemeanor offenders with acute drug addiction, according to the city. For now, the recently-renovated motel will provide temporary housing for children and families struggling with homelessness. “We’re looking at every opportunity to help those families and children experiencing homelessness during these trying times,” Mayor Faulconer said. “The rehabilitation of this motel couldn’t come at a better time as the need for temporary shelter has never been greater. I want to thank City Attorney Elliott for partnering with me to provide safety and relief to so many families as we fight to stop the spread of this deadly virus.”The city started moving families to motel rooms in March to allow for proper physical distancing. “During this challenging time, it's more important than ever to ensure our most vulnerable community members are protected,” City Attorney Elliott said. “I am gratified to be able to transition our S.M.A.R.T. on Palm facility to provide temporary emergency housing for families in this time of dire need.”The facility has 42 transitional housing rooms, 39 double-bed units, and three units that meet the Americans with Disability Act standards, the city says. 1693

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Department of Homeland Security is responding to the caravan of Central American immigrants prepared to enter the United States through the border with Mexico.At least 600 people from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua are traveling to Tijuana, according to freelance journalist Jorge Nieto. About 100 arrived last night. Eventually the group will enter the U.S. at the San Ysidro port of entry.Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen released a statement on the caravan.“DHS continues to monitor the remnants of the ‘caravan’ of individuals headed to our Southern border with the apparent intention of entering the United States illegally. A sovereign nation that cannot – or worse, chooses not – to defend its borders will soon cease to be a sovereign nation. The Trump Administration is committed to enforcing our immigration laws – whether persons are part of this ‘caravan’ or not.”DHS warned members of the caravan that they may be turned over for prosecution under illegal entry laws. Anyone seeking asylum may be detained while their claims are processed, DHS said.“Again, if you enter the United States illegally, let me be clear: you have broken the law. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) is urging school districts across the state to roll back in-person classes and return to distance learning.CFT President Jeff Freitas said with most of the state back in the purple tier of restrictions, it only makes sense to go back to virtual learning until there is a slow in the spread of COVID-19.“We need to get these numbers down," said Freitas. “We think the best thing right now is for schools to stop their plans of reopening and, or if they are reopened, to close their schools and go back to remote.”Three Vista Unified School District schools -- Rancho Buena Vista High, Vista Magnet Middle, and Madison Middle -- returned to virtual learning Tuesday after positive COVID-19 cases were reported. It’s a back-and-forth the district has been dealing with since reopening for in-person instruction last month.“There should be more of a statewide approach and definitely a national approach,” said Freitas. “We have been asking that they take the lead on this.”San Diego Unified School District thinks it has come up with an answer. During its State of the District address Tuesday evening, Superintendent Cindy Marten said the district created a federal relief plan to get all schools nationwide back on track for the next two years.The plan asks for federal investment in education that would be centered around equity and undoing learning loss.“What would the San Diego strategy look like at the national level? We have outlined that plan, shared it with the Biden administration,” said Marten.The plan includes a COVID-19 testing, tracking, and tracing strategy for students and staff, and 0 billion in direct relief to schools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The largest employer in the country is waving away a long standing tradition. Walmart is planning to phase out its greeters at more than 1,000 stores across the country. The retail giant says it is moving forward with a new role called “customer host” that is more physically demanding. The hosts will still greet people but must also be able to pass physical exams including lifting a 25-pound box and climbing ladders. Critics say the move targets their elderly and disabled employees, which make up a significant portion of the company’s greeters. “I can’t do that,” said Adam Catlin, who has cerebral palsy and has worked as a Walmart greeter for a decade. Walmart says it is striving to place greeters in other jobs at the company and the title of greeter will be officially eliminated April 26. “I want to keep my job past April 26 because I have made a lot of good friends and a lot of good memories over the years,” added Catlin. Walmart has not said how many greeters will lose their jobs but adds it is, “extending the current 60-day greeter transition period for associates with disabilities while we explore the circumstances and potential accommodations, for each individual, that can be made within each store.” 1252
