BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China expects Japan to make joint efforts so as to maintain and advance the two nations' ties, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu on Saturday.Ma made these remarks when asked to comment on a statement made by Japan's Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara who reportedly said on Friday that as the world's second and third largest economies, Japan and China should work together to continue pushing forward the two countries' strategic links."We have taken note of the statement. BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A public supervision scheme for China's prosecutors will be rolled out nationwide next month, a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader said Tuesday.A pilot public supervisor scheme, which started six years ago, had proved effective in supervising judicial departments, said Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, at a meeting in Beijing.From next month, the measure would be formally adopted nationwide, he said.More work should be done to improve the selection and management of public supervisors and to draft regulations, he said.Government departments, non-governmental organizations, state-owned enterprises and communities could nominate members of the public as supervisors to the procuratorates.The public supervisors would give opinions to procuratorates when prosecutors decided to drop corruption charges, or when a suspect in the corruption case complained about the arrest.They could also oversee the actions of prosecutors, to prevent illegal detentions, obtaining confessions through violence and torture, and illegal collection of evidence.A report by the Supreme People's Procuratorate to the National People's Congress in March 2008 said about 86 percent of procuratorates had taken part in the trial.At the meeting, Zhou admitted that the country still faced a tough task in judicial reform.The government would work out new policies to attract more prosecutors and judges to work in local judicial departments, he said.

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- China launched a large-scale tree-planting program against soil-erosion along the Three-Gorge Dam section of the country's largest Yangtze River Friday, with two launching ceremonies held in Beijing and Chongqing, simultaneously.The program is aimed to raise funds from individual and institutional donors for planting trees on 3.8 million mu (253,333 hectares) on the banks of the Yangtze River in Chongqing.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), is the honorary chairman of the organizational committee of the program.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu and Chongqing Party chief Bo Xilai attended and addressed the ceremony in Beijing.Hui spoke highly of the tree-planting program, saying that it would be new probe for the bio-environmental protection of major rivers in the country as well as a new, great contribution to the afforestation and protection of the Yangtze River.The vice premier recognized that the Yangtze River is still facing severe bio-environmental deterioration and soil erosion, though notable achievements have been made in the afforestation efforts along the river in the past decades.In his speech, Bo pledged that Chongqing will take three to five years to increase the forest coverage in the dam area to 65 percent, from the present 22.2 percent. Currently, soil-erosion has covered over 20,000 square kilometers, about 50 percent of the total area, he noted.According to previous reports, Chongqing plans to raise over 10 billion yuan (1.5 billion U.S. dollars) from institutional and individual donors for the tree-planting program.

TIANJIN, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Executives from China's auto makers Sunday rejected an official warning that unchecked growth in the industry was leading to excess capacity and could harm the wider economy.Chen Bin, an official with the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, Saturday said excess auto capacity threatened sustainable economic development and must be "resolutely" stopped.But industry representatives and the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) Sunday argued car makers were only trying to meet expected demand in the world's largest auto market.Dongfeng Automobile, a major Chinese auto manufacturer, had been running in top gear since last year, said Fan Zhong, a senior manager. "Our problem is not having enough capacity."Most entrepreneurs at the International Forum on Chinese Automobile Industry Development in Tianjin had similar views.Ford China was focusing on expanding capacity as demand kept rising, said CEO Robert Graziano.The overall capacity of China's auto industry might seem excessive, but the market had huge potential for restructuring and growth, said Hu Xinmin, honorary chairman of the CAAM.
