Police are warning about a terrifying phone scam where the person on the other end of the phone says they are holding a family member for ransom.One woman said she received one of these calls and it was the most frightening call she ever received.Natalie Bruser was heading home from work when her cellphone rang from a number she did not recognize."I answered, and it sounded like one of my kids crying, and I couldn't figure out who it was," said Bruser, who has three children. "They were crying super hard, and so I was hysterical."The sobbing young woman said she had been kidnapped. Bruser thought it sounded most like her daughter Nicole, who is in her 20s."It seems that a black Suburban pulled up, and people got out with guns," she said. "And Nicole started screaming."A man then got on the phone and said if Bruser wanted to see her daughter again, she needed to drive over at a gas station off Interstate 75 in Springboro, and get money from an ATM.The man said police were on their tail, and then he told Bruser to stay on the phone and not call 9-1-1. The man also said Bruser needed to act quickly or they would harm her daughter, who appeared to be still crying in the background."She was crying heavily," Bruser said. "And I said, 'Nicole, please calm down. I need to hear your voice. I need to really hear that you're OK.'"But it was all a scam.Luckily, Bruser was able to yell for help, and someone nearby called the police. Officers quickly sorted the situation out.It turned out that there was no black SUV with armed men inside, there was no police car in pursuit, and as for Bruser's daughter Nicole, she was home resting."I'm freaking out at this point. I don't know if they have her hostage or not," Bruser said. "So Springboro police actually went and banged on her door, and she was sleeping, and so here she was safe at home."How the scam worksIt's called the "virtual kidnapping scam."According to police, the caller is not local and does not even know your son or daughter's name. But panicked parents will grab hundreds of dollars, then run to the nearest Western Union desk to wire money for the release of their child.Reports from around the country say this is a very effective scam. The scammers usually tell their victims to stay on the phone and not let anyone know what is going on or they will harm their child.As for the black Chevy Suburban filled with kidnappers carrying guns, the scammers have seen action movies where this is a common trope.In a moment of panic however, it's easy to miss all the holes in the caller's story.So be suspicious of any strange phone calls that appear to be from a family member in distress. PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Using animals like dogs and horses for therapy when it comes to PTSD is fairly common, but there is a Vietnam veteran in Pinellas County who is using Birds of Prey.“When I feel worthless they remind me that I have a purpose, they give me a reason to get up even on my bad days,” said Ria Warner.Warner is married to a military veteran and also suffers from her own past trauma. She said when she started bonding with Birds of Prey, like Thunder the Bald Eagle, she felt like she had grown a pair of wings herself.“They help me to identify little things before like an anxiety attack or depression would set in, so they’ll help you find those triggers before they get pulled,” said Warner.Over the past seven years, Patrick Bradley has paired dozens of different species with more than 4,000 military veterans and their families.“The raptors are apex predators, so are soldiers, number two, the raptors were hurt, so were soldiers, so they bonded quicker,” said Bradley.All of the birds come from wildlife rehabilitation organizations. Their injuries deemed too severe to be released back into the wild.“We don’t hand veterans right from the wild our animals, these birds have been vetted by us,” said Bradley.Bradley credits the bald eagle for saving his own life after returning from Vietnam. Police in Illinois have deemed a local man a hero after he raced to rescue a man from a burning vehicle on Sunday evening.According to the Aurora Police Department's Facebook page, a 57-year-old man rushed to the rescue after a single-car crash just after midnight on Saturday. Dash cam video from the crash shows the man dragging the driver away from the car by his legs as flames shoot out of the driver's side window.According to Aurora police, it was 58-year-old Jose Martinez who rushed out of his home to save the driver, a 34-year-old man. A second man, 29-year-old Devin Johnson, also helped by pulling the man away from the car.  "To say Jose's actions were heroic and brave are an understatement. Had he not taken immediate action, the driver would not have lived," the department wrote on Facebook. " Devin should also be commended for assuring the man was out of harm's way. Police said in a news conference Tuesday afternoon that investigators found "distractionary-type" devices in the backpack of a boy who shot himself inside Jackson Memorial Middle School near Canton, Ohio. Police said the devices were not explosives and they didn't find any devices that "would have done harm to others." Jackson Township middle school and high school students were dismissed for the day after the boy shot himself around 7:50 a.m. Authorities say the boy suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the boy's bathroom.
