BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Monday met separately with several foreign leaders in the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing.    The foreign leaders, including Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni, President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, Slovak President Ivan Gashparovic and Latvian President Valdis Zatlers, had come to the Chinese capital to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games on Aug. 8 and other activities relating to the Games.Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) shakes hands with King of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni during their meeting in Beijing, China, Aug. 11, 2008. NANNING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region became the 10th Chinese locality to have replaced gasoline and diesel oil with bio-ethanol fuel on Tuesday out of environmental and energy efficiency concerns.     Petrol stations in all the 14 cities of Guangxi began to sell bio-ethanol fuel on Tuesday and in two weeks, traditional petrol and diesel oil will be phased out, said Fu Jian, an official in charge of transport with the regional government.     Fu said about 350,000 motor vehicles and more than 3 million motorbikes will have their tanks cleaned up for the fuel change.     Presently nine other Chinese provinces are using ethanol fuel including Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces in the northeast, Henan and Hebei provinces in the north, Anhui, Shandongand Jiangsu provinces in the east and the central Hubei Province.     Guangxi is the first Chinese locality to commercially produce ethanol fuel with cassava instead of grain. The region produces 7.8 million tonnes of cassava a year, more than 60 percent of China's total.     It is home to China's first bio-ethanol fuel production base that went into operation in December in the coastal city of Beihai. The base is designed to produce 200,000 tonnes of biofuel annually out of about 1.5 million tonnes of cassava.     China banned the use of grain for ethanol production last year to ensure sufficient food supplies, and biofuel manufacturers havesince turned to sweet potatoes, sorghum and straw stalks instead.     Ethanol fuel is believed to help ease China's energy supply bottleneck. Customs statistics say China's net crude oil import climbed at least 12 percent year on year to reach 160 million tonnes in 2007, and the country's reliance on crude oil import is at least 46 percent.     It is also believed to help cut carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions, by around 30 percent and 10 percent respectively.     Chinese officials said the country's ethanol fuel sales will reach 30 million tonnes in 2010 to make up half of the total gasoline supplies.

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- A dozen people were killed and millions were affected as rainstorms continued to lash south China over the past two days, local authorities said on Friday.     Torrential rains also destroyed more than 10,000 houses, disrupted traffic and caused landslides in the provinces of Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei and Anhui, Guangdong, as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.     Precipitation exceeded 300 mm in several counties and 250 mm in more than 20 during the last two days in Guangxi and Hunan.     Five people were killed in landslides and house collapses in Guangxi. More than 1.58 million were affected as of Friday morning. About 4,000 electricians were on stand-by to fix power facilities if affected by the rainstorms.     Storms were expected to hit quake-battered Sichuan Province on Friday night and Saturday morning, according to the provincial meteorological bureau.     Relevant departments were warned of mud-and-rock flows and landslides that could be triggered by strong rains. 

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Saturday said it expects an increase in grain output for the fifth consecutive year.     The country has harvested nearly 80 percent of its autumn crops and expects 2008 to be a bumper year, the ministry stated.     The State Grain Information Center earlier estimated that this year's grain output would reach 511.5 million tons, up 10 million tons from 2007. "When the Chinese people suffered the devastating earthquake, the Pakistani people expressed concerns, offered relief materials and sent a medical team to us. The Chinese government and people feel deeply grateful," Hu said.     The medical team consists of 28 people. Hu praised them for their excellent skills and all-out efforts.     Hu said the team symbolized the friendship the Pakistani people cherished for the Chinese people and expressed his wish that the friendship would last forever.     The team members said they felt Chinese people's hospitality and vowed to do their best for the quake victims.
