PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The suspect in a fatal stabbing in Rhode Island last month was apprehended apparently trying to cross from California into Mexico.U. S. Border Patrol says 35-year-old Michael Domenech approached the checkpoint on Interstate 8 near Pine Valley, in a car at about 2 a.m. Saturday.When agents approached the driver, he drove away from the checkpoint. Authorities say agents used a tire deflation device to deflate one of the car's tires.The pursuit continued for 20 minutes until Domenech was taken into custody.Domenech is wanted in connection with the fatal stabbing of Cory Vargas in Providence on Sept. 24. 640

Queen Elizabeth II is reportedly down to just one dog after the passing of her dorgi, Vulcan, NBC News and People reported.According to NBC's TODAY, the dorgi is a crossbreed corgi and a dachshund. The queen reportedly came up with past breeding of "generations of her corgis with dachshunds belonging to her late sister, Princess Margaret."People reported that Vulcan died at Windsor Castle, where the queen, 94, and husband Prince Philip have been since March amid the coronavirus pandemic.The leaves the queen with just one dog, another dorgi named Candy, People reported.Vulcan's passing comes just two weeks after Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge's family dog Lupo died, according to NBC News. 733

President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday that Sec. of Defense Mark Esper has been terminated.Trump added that he has tasked Christopher C. Miller to take over as Acting Sec. of Defense.Esper took over as Acting Sec. of Defense in June and was named as the department's director shortly thereafter. Late last week, NBC News reported that Esper had drafted a resignation letter in the days following the 2020 presidential election.Esper has been at odds with Trump throughout his tenure. In June, he said he opposed the President's call to use active-duty military members to break up protests against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd's death.NBC News also reports that Esper plans to help Congress draft legislation that would re-name military bases that honor Confederate generals — a policy that Trump also opposes.Esper was Trump's second full-time Secretary of Defense. President Donald Trump sought to distance himself from the Justice Department official he just named as acting attorney general in the face of mounting criticism about the legality and propriety of his appointment."I don't know Matt Whitaker," Trump said of the new acting attorney general, saying he hired him because he had worked for since-dismissed Attorney General Jeff Sessions. "He was always extremely highly thought of, and he still is. But I didn't know Matt Whitaker. He worked for Attorney General Sessions."The President's comments are at odds with the relationship Trump has forged with Whitaker in recent months, even as his opinion of Sessions continued to sour. Whitaker has been at the White House dozens of times, including in meetings with Trump, and the two have spoken by phone on several occasions, including on the day that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was expected to be fired.Whitaker was not hired as Sessions' chief of staff by virtue of any pre-existing relationship with Sessions, but instead because White House officials believed Whitaker's loyalties would lie at the White House and not with the beleaguered attorney general, sources said.  1196

Research by the RAND Corporation American Life Panel found that Americans over the age of 30 have been drinking more alcohol in 2020 than they did a year ago.The journal Jama Network Open published the results Tuesday.Researchers surveyed more than 1,500 people between the ages of 30 and 80 in 2019 and 2020. They found a 14% increase in drinking during the pandemic.On average, alcohol was consumed one day more per month by 3-of-4 adults, researchers said.Researchers added that it's essential to watch for whether the increases in alcohol drinking continues over the pandemic, and whether it will lead to physical and mental health consequences. 657
