PARIS, April 27 (Xinhua) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday described this year's World Expo theme of "Better City, Better Life" as a bold and lucid choice focused on a significant challenge for the future. The president is scheduled to visit China on April 28-30 with stops at Xi'an, Beijing and Shanghai, where the exposition will be held from May 1 to Oct. 31."Taking the theme 'Better City, Better Life', you have chosen to make the 2010 Shanghai Expo an event resolutely focused toward the future," Sarkozy told Xinhua in an interview. He said, while the number of city dwellers continued to grow across the world and issues related to urban development became more and more significant, many problems needed to be solved. So China's choice of "Better City, Better Life" was appropriate."I pay tribute to the organizers of the 2010 Shanghai Expo who have made a lucid and bold choice," he said.Sarkozy said France was one of the firm supporters of Shanghai's candidacy for the exposition and was the first country to have promised to participate in the event."The choice of China and the choice of Shanghai, were something very important for us; that is the reason why I wanted to personally attend the opening ceremony," he said. The president said China has made great efforts to make the expo "a huge success."Sarkozy said the design and display in the France pavilion would reflect a real, colorful, confident and open France.

HANGZHOU, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Water Resources (MWR) said Sunday the country will step up water conservation infrastructure construction to better cope with natural disasters. The central government has allocated over 80 billion yuan (11.7 billion U.S. dollars) this year for water conservation projects. Total investment in the sector is expected to hit 200 billion yuan, MWR vice minister Jiao Yong said at a work conference Sunday in Hangzhou, capital city of the eastern Zhejiang Province.Jiao said water conservation facilities in China would be expanded while insuring the quality of the projects.Meanwhile, repair and maintenance work on reservoirs in poor condition will be boosted this year, said Sun Jichang, a senior MRW official.China needed to reinforce a total of 6,240 faulty reservoirs in the three years to 2010. So far, only 2,000 of them have been reinforced as insufficient local funding or possible misuse of funds has delayed the work, Sun said.Local water authorities will be rushed as the Ministry is requiring all reservoir repair work be finished by the end of the year.

BEIJING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a two-month campaign to inspect work safety nationwide on April 5, according to the work safety commission of the State Council, or the Cabinet.Serious accidents took place in succession in some areas and industries recently, which shows negligence and loopholes in work safety management and serious violations to laws and regulations, said a circular issued by the commission. The inspection would focus on work safety in mines, the chemical industry, transportation and fire-works mills, among others. The campaign would include self-examination by enterprises, government inspection and public supervision.Enterprises are required to complete self-examination in April and local governments to conduct inspection in May, while the commission would dispatch supervision teams to check their work. The nationwide campaign comes days after 153 coal miners were trapped in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province, which will be China's worst mining disaster in more than two years if the miners cannot be saved.
